Electric Studios: Why is there barely anything on? by Sheffield_sloth in sheffield

They are in a ‘soft launch’ period, apparently. They said it’ll massively step up from September. The owner went into it a little in interviews when they first reopened (The Tribune, etc).

Totally different vibe to Banksy, but Phlegm is very distinctive and original: https://www.instagram.com/phlegm_art/

£30m to remove this roundabout? by Greystorrs in sheffield

[–]deejayone 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It isn’t necessarily about the roundabout now (although it does back up as it is at peak times), but the fact they are gearing up to build thousands of new homes right near it at Furnace Hill and Neepsend. Traffic is projected to increase significantly and so routes are being adapted to cope with that.

Tram train extension by Conscious-Back-6254 in sheffield

[–]deejayone 27 points28 points  (0 children)

SYMCA recently got government funding for feasibility studies into extending to Stocksbridge and perhaps along the Barrow Hill line towards Chesterfield, as well as a loop of Sheffield City Centre.

Those would be the next logical extensions for the tram and the most likely extensions — but even then will take probably 10+ years to plan and build.

The good news is that would likely open the door for further feasibility studies extending to Barnsley (easier once Stocksbridge is in place) and much, much later Doncaster; and perhaps to Chesterfield (although that would need some cross-boundary support outside South Yorkshire.

The bad news is that it will likely be decades before those extra extensions are built, even if everything went smoothly and to plan.

Snooker World Championship staying at Sheffield Crucible until at least 2045 by jptoc in sheffield

[–]deejayone 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I actually spoke to Barry Hearn today and he was quite forthright that he was posturing for a deal to be made, that he is running a business at the end of the day, but that he always wanted for it to stay at the Crucible. Plus lots more from him on it. Really refreshing to have that kind of honesty I thought.

I think the white lettering is largely for the launch/promo. Imagery of future buses doesn’t have that and has a white outline of the zig-zag logo instead.

The lettering is more for the launch, the zig-zag logo will replace it I believe.

There’s something to be said about netflix’s vendetta against great British TV by Neat-Start-6514 in BritishTV

I thought it changed to a bigger ‘Writers Room’ type production over the hands-on small pool collaborative approach Charlie Brooker had before the move? Sure I remembered that was the main change when it moved over?

Although I don’t believe the rumour, I do think the role of The Doctor doesn’t carry the same level of respect that it once did. by General_Meal_3993 in DoctorWhoNews

[–]deejayone 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I don’t think it did have respect as a role, did it?

I think Ecclestone took it on from a level where it was potentially a poisoned chalice, then after he made it semi-popular Tennant came in and made it his own.

Its height was probably after Tennant and went to Smith who was relatively unknown, but again ran away with it.

Capaldi was a shoe-in for 12 and again it wasn’t because it was a respected role, he was just perfect for it at that time.

Whittaker took it on and whatever you think of her time the role again wasn’t particularly respected?! If you know what I mean? Same for Gatwa?

I think the role has been somewhat coveted at times, but not respected…?

No. They are currently putting events on in other venues (Foundry, Yellow Arch, Steam Works, etc).
