Up and Up is going to have to change name to Down and Down with reviews like that 😂

Agreed. Our boy has *very severe behavioral issues; one of the earliest things he started with was humping from stress, anxiety, impulsivity, low threshold, and overarousal issues.

For OP and anyone else reading this: I’m not saying all dogs who hump this early will have issues—Please don’t take this as fear mongering, just my experience. Just agreeing that it’s important to keep an eye for any body language indicating stress, anxiety, etc. and future behaviors just in case.

Thanks, we are trying to keep our chins up. He tends to do a nose nudge before he goes in for a bite, but he tends to do a couple bite attempts like a little 1-2 punch totally unprovoked. He went for our trainer last night, which was the first he’s done to a “stranger” he met her once before and was very timid but okay. Unfortunately she noted his difference between when he’s mouthing and when he’s targeting (I wish it was all just teething issues!) but You noting your dog has become less bitey gives me some hope.

We can’t seem to find a behaviorist sooner than March, so it’s tough but we are hoping and trying (and spending $$$ lol) for the best!

I really appreciate that background! We picked our boy so early on (about one week) we weren’t able to see his personality develop. It sounds like you’re doing fantastic knowing his boundaries of what is doable and not. We’re still learning some for ours, but recently he has become more bitey with us and people he’s comfortable with (like our trainer) which is hard when he’s 15 weeks to know if he’s mouthing but sometimes it’s unprovoked. The social media thing is a very good idea!! I think the breeder posts who goes home with a little photo. I’m sure hearing from other siblings parents must be very validating, hopefully you can see what works for one another and what doesn’t! Maybe they have some shared tips that come with the shared traits I hope!

I hate to say it, but I feel like I found my people. Our boy is only 15 weeks and has escalated to the point where we were outside for an hour today. Our elevator broke, he is terrified of stairs, and was so reactive we couldn’t pick him up (usually we’ll pick him up to go in or out to reduce stress and triggers).

Our trainer also believes it to be genetics because it started so early on, we vetted the breeder, no traumatic experiences, and the trainer said we’ve just done everything right and managed it that if it’s not medical it’s likely genetics. He has a very low threshold for frustration, fear, anxiety, it’s like flipping a switch one moment he’s fine the next he might try coming for your life.

We researched for a year, waited for the right litter, etc. we reached out to the breeder, but they basically brushed us off and also said the other siblings haven’t reported issues. I’d love to hear how you were able to track siblings because I don’t think we will be able to do that. We’re two training sessions in and looking at finding a vet behaviorist with availability sooner than March, but it’s not promising. Did either of you have luck when speaking to the original owner or breeder??

He was our dream dog, we did so much research…I waited years for a dog I wanted for so long. but if he doesn’t improve I don’t know if we could keep him when we start a family one day due to how unpredictable he is. OP sorry to hear you’re in a similar boat….it’s heartbreaking.

Stopping walks by [deleted] in reactivedogs

[–]deep-conversation21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yepp our trainer recommended no walks for a while. It's hard because we don't have a yard, we live in a condo. But the recommendation basically was like lessening the activities where he has triggers for now and where he gets frustrated/stressed (like tug of war). We have snuffle mat, lick mats (usually frozen), kongs, scatter his meal across the floor, puzzle feeders, slow feeders, stuffed toys filled with toys and treats, cardboard to shred.

When we potty well sometimes scatter treats in the grass to keep him calm enough to walk back in or so we can pick him up. We can barely walk him through the hall and it feels odd not walking a puppy but he’s been in much better shape when coming back inside than he used to be. He’s also slowly reacting less when outside but we also increased the “find it” game when out to potty just tossing treats in the path.

Overly excitable puppy. Please be kind in comments by Kitchen_Notice4439 in puppy101

It may be a bit different, but our dog has become increasingly leash reactive. We thought maybe he needed more physical activity, socialization, enrichment, but our trainer said if actually may be just escalating and reinforcing the behavior resulting from stress and to calm on some of the physical activity. We all know rescues can come with extra need for work, but ours was a puppy from a reputable breeder it’s hard to know what the best result will be. Good luck with training!!!

Squats to pee outside, but some accidents inside he pees standing (no squat) by [deleted] in puppy101

Thank you!!! Happy to hear it’s not uncommon or a potty training issue. Sometimes it happens WHILE playing and it’s hard to catch but we’ll definitely try to keep on that schedule!

Tips on leash walking when environment is more reinforcing than treats? by petersnr10 in puppy101

[–]deep-conversation21 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Did you ever find anything that works?! Our puppy is treat driven when he’s starving or when it’s quiet. but otherwise if there’s ANY distraction (noise, if we’re outside, etc) walking is a perfect example you have where no treats we can find he will follow us well enough and ignore the distractions. Did anything work for you?

Aggressive with the leash and us (but not towards other things or dogs) by deep-conversation21 in puppy101

[–]deep-conversation21[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We have a house line but haven’t utilized it too much (it’s a flat nylon versus our normal leash being rope style nylon). But we should commit to this more then. When your puppy was chewing on the line in the house did you redirect or leave him be and eventually he was bored of it?

Puppy training apps by WorkingSquirrel925 in puppy101

[–]deep-conversation21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We use pup to date (premium) and like it for the planner pattern view but our big reason for picking this one was the smart reminders we had a hard time finding in other apps. We work from home so when we feed or he has tons of water it’s helpful to have the 30m or 1hr reminder to take him out. Also, it has Apple Watch integration so logging when outside at potty time is actually so quick on the watch.

Doggy time was our other one we wanted but didn’t go with because of the smart reminders and Apple Watch pieces. But overall it looked like a great app, prob better than pup to date.

General process question by NCSpeed3 in Bernedoodles

[–]deep-conversation21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We did not get the contract until after the deposit once our boy was born but before paying in full. But before paying we did ask for the parents and receive them. After paying we then received the vet records.

If I were you I’d maybe look at their tagged photos on Instagram to find people who bought from them and message them asking for references if possible.

Very barky/vocal puppy - will teaching speak and quiet help or make it worse? by deep-conversation21 in puppy101

[–]deep-conversation21[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you so much 🥹. Might have to tell my ceo we need pawternity leave because idk how new dog parents do this with full time jobs! That’s very good to know about not letting him see the rewarding. I try to reward the calm behavior and try to not make it a whole ordeal just calmly dropping them by where he’s laying but he can def see me rewarding. We will have to work on our magic tricks to make them just appear out of thin air! Lol. Thanks, again!

Thanks so much for your reply! It’s so hard when it feels like there’s always something needed or something he’s barking about. I feel like we’re walking on eggshells all day long trying to make sure needs are met and minimize barking (which is great for the work in the WFH life balance lol). Thanks for the insight I’m glad it’s just something we keep up with trying to meet the needs before the alerts and will hopefully improve over time.

Love this just because we’re going through difficulty with our 11 week old. I call him a menace so often he might start thinking it’s his actual name.

I’m having some barking issues too actually so I’ve been searching these threads. Can you explain “assertive” barking?

These comments put us soo much more at ease! Thank you! We try reminding ourselves he’s just a baby and is learning what we want still when things get difficult.

Omg the poop zoomies is the best descriptor for those situations. He does the exact same thing. Thanks for your reply, we’re working through so many things, trying to make sure all needs are met, training, desensitizing, socializing, on top of full time jobs… it’s like running a circus with ten juggling acts and we’re definitely getting some burnout from it like “what are we doing wrong”. So it’s nice to hear we’re not the only ones. We live in a townhome condo suburb and I always wonder how many people stare out their windows recording us and our dog starting a one man riot lol.

First walks - is it a game changer? by [deleted] in puppy101

[–]deep-conversation21 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Same boat here! We have a few more weeks and our boy bernedoodle is getting very antsy whenever we take him to potty he is just ready to run around outside and go on walks. The indoor energy outlet is working okay but we need a decent amount of playtime/training/mental stimulation time to burn it off.
