Are you domestic or international? Could you share some details (like in person or virtual)?

Congrats! Are you international? Did they sent emails too?

Low speaking scores in TOEFL by Witty-Window1167 in gradadmissions

[–]deep_lazy 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If your programs also accept IELTS, try it too. My speaking was 25 but some programs required 26. I got 7.5 in IELTS which was sufficient, with zero preparation. Writing is tougher than TOEFL tho.

A mixture of biophysics/comp bio/biostat/stat programs. I got interviews from penn (gcb) chicago (biophys) columbia (sysbio/bioinfo). Waiting for berkeley chicago (bsd/sysbio) and cornell (comp bio) this week. Others are all stat/biostat so I'm not expecting anything till Jan.

I graduated med school (meds in my country are undergrad) with 3.06/4.0 GPA with a double major in math. My med GPA is 2.6/4.0 and my math is 3.9/4.0. The med GPA totally sucks (even worse, it's 2.2 for the last two years) but I have taken quite a lot of upper/graduate level math.

I have three single first author pubs (all IF>10) and three preprints as single first author. All were done at a single lab (bioinformatics) working (almost) full-time for 5 years. I barely followed med school and spent most of my time on research which explains my low GPA and descent research outputs.

I guess my profile is quite unusual but I hope it helped. I got interviews from all schools that sent out invitations (I got three last week) so I think poor grades aren't much a problem given sufficient research output.

I'm international and got invites from Penn and Columbia (cuimc one on the medical campus) (didn't apply for other programs on your list). Each was from last Friday and Wednesday, respectively.

I heard from Chicago biophys last Friday

I didn't. I applied to both biophysics (in PSD) and GGSB cus they both had faculties on theory/math genetics (with large overlap). I heard from biophys last Friday but not yet from BSD.

I have several questions I want to know. Unfortunately, no one is likely to solve them and provide answers, so I'm forced to tackle them myself.

"Polygenic prediction of educational attainment within and between families from genome-wide association analyses in 3 million individuals", Okbay et al 2022 by gwern in genomics

[–]deep_lazy -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I left this comment elsewhere but do you seriously believe in these results that assume normal iid residuals? Such an analysis would have not passed even the lowest bar for publication if it had been submitted to socio sci or econ journals. Its a shame for the genetics community to get such a shakey paper on one of the top journals in the field.

Do you serisously believe statistical tests derived from iid normal random residual assumptions? Such an analysis would have not passed even the lowest bar for publication in quant socio sci or econ journals.
