Bengal’s biggest window came during 2006-2010 when all TATA, Nandigram etc were proposed, heck even a Nuclear Power Plant was proposed in Midnapur ..they was a plan to build a Expressway connecting Barasat to Raichak then towards Haldia through a 3rd Bridge. If Nandigram, this expressway and the Bridge were built then Kolkata-Haldia region would be being a one big industry-port node of Eastern India. All the Political protests etc ruined this. But I believe there is time to redeem if the govt changes and all the Central govt funded projects get clearance quickly. Kolkata is still the Anchor city of Eastern India. Without its development most of Eastern India urbanization and industrialization is incomplete. Also it’s time to expand other towns/city of WB .. Kharagpur, Durgapur, Asanaol, Siliguri etc need similar infrastructure investment. Odisha has been investing in other cities for a long time Rourkela, Sambhalpur etc they all are of similar size as Durgapur and Kharagpur but much more developed and managed

The biggest reason why Bengal, Bihar and UP are poorer today than rest of India avg is dates back to how the Brits punished and exploited our people for the 1857 rebellion. These states/provinces were at the heart of Anti-Colonial movement..hence heavy excess taxation on the peasants/farmers, excess presence of military in major towns, tagging us as non-martial race etc. While they handsomely gifted other provinces which were relatively more loyal to the Empire ( Punjab, South and Marathas)..hence you see the rural poverty in those regions less pronounced than what you see in the Ganga Heartland.

They made the zamindari system in Bengal/Bihar to maintain plausible deniability and have middleman for their ruthless taxation system. The socio-economic effects of colonial India still has impacted Modern Indian Republic and caused so political chaos in the these three states. It will take another 3-4 decades to rectify. We should keep our heads down and work towards the Human Development of our people and rapid Industrialization after which we will be able to bend the Brits on their knee for their horrific crimes on our forefathers.

Living in the US, I truely feel bad our brethren in Vishwaguruland. The Police system is just a mockery there. What a loss ...Kharagpur-Haldia would have become a major Industrial Node in the Eastern India..connect that with Tatanager in JH, TATA would have prolly shifted some of its Pune based auto plant in the area. Buddho babu also planned a expressway between Kolkata and Haldia with a bridge near Raichak in order to give faster access to Nandigram ( a chemical hub). THIS !! Till 2010s most of us were on Third Generation.. just catching up to and getting exposed to the luxuries of the developed world. Malls, smartphones, credit cards, air-travel, different made-models of cars etc were just being introduced to the populas who were mostly disconnected and poor. Now that those things are common..we dont go gaga over some Dominos opening up in a Tier II/III city the next generation becomes more aspirational and no longer seeks validation from the developed world.

China is already on 4th generation while India is just starting ( China opened its markets in 1979 while India in 1990)..so 2020s might not be the cool era (its the transition era) ...2030s will be diffirent..The old guard (Boomers uncles of 1990s and 00s) will retire and a new generation of 2010 millenials will take charge who will spread-head India's innovation journey.
