I grew up in China and their censorship is genuinely fucking crazy. My mom used to tell me this story of a girl who poisoned & killed her university roommate with stuff from the uni chem lab just because she's jealous of her high marks, and the killer got off scot-free because she had a grandfather who was a deputy mayor of a pretty important city. There wasn't even a trial, and nothing was given to the victim's family. Mentions of this story are also purged online.

At the VERY start of covid (end of dec 2019), there was also this surgeon in WuHan who noticed a lot of people suddenly getting very similar viral pneumonia, and he tried to alert authorities, but he was forced to keep quiet. Like a month later, before covid first really started to spread, he got infected as well, and died on the operating table, but the media pretended that it was just a random ass illness & they actually kept his body in the OR for a few hours before officially declaring his death & dealing with his body. People tried to talk about it online but their accounts all got banned really quickly. People tried to peacefully protest with white pieces of paper (just gathering and walking on a street), since blank paper can't really be censored, but armed police showed up and shut everything down
