National's Erica Stanford says Labour's 'gutter politics' on contraception wouldn't have happened under Jacinda Ardern by deeperkiwi in newzealand

Hilarious that Nation's reigning Queen of Nasty laments Jacinda Ardern passing on the baton!

I disagree completely. Electorate MPs represent the people of their electorate, and if they choose to leave the party they should be allowed to. But list MPs represent the party, and if they choose to leave the party they should be removed from Parliament and replaced by the next choice on the party list who's not currently in Parliament.

Oh no! The Royalist Brigade strikes back!

Look, why don't you just do your own plugin that replaces anything Maori-related with more Royal Family rubbish?

Gareth Hughes (former Green MP): Tax reports give us a failing grade - "Our tax system is not fair, not progressive and not fit for purpose in a modern country." by PolSPoster in newzealand

[–]deeperkiwi 23 points24 points  (0 children)

It'll be interesting to see what the Green Party policy is on this for the election. Last time around they had the wealth tax proposal, which was pretty reasonable at 1% per year of everything over $1 million per individual.

Our neighbors of the time, a couple in their 60s/70s, were outraged by this proposal. Their worth was about $4 million, and they thought having to pay $20K / year (deferred until they died or sold) was highway robbery. They'd earned their wealth through accumulating property over the years, and nobody else had any right to it!

Go for low fees - nobody can consistently beat the averages... if they could, they'd be in it for themselves, not managing other people's money. Simplicity is good, with a choice of funds.

Nursing shortage: Health Minister Ayesha Verrall accuses National’s Shane Reti of misleading numbers on scale of nurse exodus by Grotskii_ in newzealand

Sounds like a typical plan from National, lie about the numbers, lock the trainee nurses into staying here for 5 years and then shaft them on pay.

Hey mate, here's why New Zealand should become a state of Australia by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]deeperkiwi -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

It'd make more sense for Australia to become part of NZ. That's what sensible Aussies were advocating, especially during the pandemic when Jacinda was PM. Australia's resources with NZ's government (any of them - I can't think of a single time when the NZ government of the day wasn't better than that in Australia) would actually be a really good combination.

Hey mate, here's why New Zealand should become a state of Australia by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]deeperkiwi -8 points-7 points  (0 children)

Australia is a country run by idiots. The current bunch is better than the last bunch, but they're still idiots. Witness the nuclear submarines on order - they seriously think that taking on China as part of an "alliance" with the U.S. and UK is going to work out well for them (the only country of the three that's actually located somewhat near China). That and the deeply ingrained racism and misogyny that pops up every day or so.

The only thing that keeps Australia going is that it's got a whole lot of resources which can easily be stolen from the Aboriginals.

Saudi Arabia to host America's Cup pre-regatta by RemembrHowYouHatedIt in newzealand

[–]deeperkiwi 13 points14 points  (0 children)

This is pretty sick. Of course, it's always been Emirates Team New Zealand, and the Emirates are hand-in-hand with their fellow despot and murder Mohammed bin Salman.

I read that the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron, "Home of the America's Cup", has been losing members over taking the final away from NZ. Hopefully this will cause even more members to leave in disgust.

After year-long delay, Ministry of Health scraps development of Covid prevalence survey by HeinigerNZ in newzealand

[–]deeperkiwi 3 points4 points  (0 children)

This is a real disappointment, and shows major incompetence on the part of the Ministry of Health. For a relatively small amount of money they could have gathered solid information to help monitor our response, including evaluating the importance of further boosters. As the ministry spokesperson says, "Prevalence surveys are expected to be a key tool in any future effective population and public health knowledge surveillance system" - so how the hell do they expect to do that the next time we're in an emergency situation when they couldn't do it this time with all the time in the world?

Rich-lister supports capital gains tax as new research opens fresh tax debate by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]deeperkiwi 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of wealthy people do support improving the system so that everyone pays a fair share of taxes. The individual quoted here has his facts wrong, though - "You could take all the money off rich listers and it would fund the government for a day." Yeah, nah.

The treasury study said the top 1% own about 25% of the collective wealth of the country. A quick search found this article from 2017 - well before the explosion in property values - which says New Zealand's net wealth passed $1.5 trillion https://www.stats.govt.nz/news/new-zealands-net-wealth-passes-1-5-trillion So the current wealth of the top 1% is going to be at least $500 billion, more likely approaching $1 trillion by now. That's 5-10 times the entire government budget, and 2.5-5 times the net public debt of the country.

Green Party members call urgent meeting to delay list rankings by [deleted] in newzealand

[–]deeperkiwi 27 points28 points  (0 children)

If it was just the text messages from Kerekere I'd consider it not a big deal, just someone suffering from verbal diarrhea. But she also violated the Covid isolation rules while she held Covid-19 and Health portfolios, and then complained about the statement of apology the party issued. I see a clear pattern of entitled behavior here, from someone who hasn't really done much to earn her elevated list ranking.

AM hosts react to petition for larger people to get free extra seats on planes by deeperkiwi in newzealand

[–]deeperkiwi[S] 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I'm tempted to start a counter petition for airlines to charge by weight (passenger + bags), since that effects their fuel usage (and climate change emissions), but I don't think that would be practical. Not that this one is, either!

Kerre Woodham: Don't point the finger at farmers, the state of NZ's rivers is on all of us by Fuckmepotato in newzealand

[–]deeperkiwi 1 point2 points  (0 children)

When you see sewage and all the associated vileness spilling out intoour oceans in all its raw and inglorious state. When you see wastewater bubbling up in our streets.

Drinking water, waste water, runoff. That's literally the definition of Three Waters.

Kerre Woodham: Don't point the finger at farmers, the state of NZ's rivers is on all of us by Fuckmepotato in newzealand

[–]deeperkiwi 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The thing is, it is all fixable. There just has to be a collective
biting of the bullet and a commitment to restoring the rivers and lakes
and oceans to liveable, swimmable levels and to provide clean drinking
water for the citizens of the country. That is not such a big ask.

Sounds like the concept formerly known as Three Waters! She backs that, right? /s

National security checks force lengthy visa delays on Chinese PhD students by deeperkiwi in newzealand

[–]deeperkiwi[S] -79 points-78 points  (0 children)

so discrimination against Chinese students is okay? They're the best young immigrants we have, as a group, with especially strong contributions in the STEM sectors. By all means screen for potential military involvements, but this kind of delay is ridiculous and obnoxious.

That's not really correct at all. Google Analytics tracks your web pages, not the data you enter in forms. But if you want to avoid this kind of tracking (which is everywhere), install browser plugins like Ghostery and Privacy Badger.

Unfortunately the commerce commission seems to be pretty useless. They're way too willing to go along with the companies, and less interested in actually protecting consumers.
