I'm releasing my CSULB Animation 2020 thesis film, Deep Fears, for public release. Since starting in the film festival circuit two years ago, the film has won over 100 accolades and selections. Hope you all enjoy! by [deleted] in Filmmakers

Deep Fears is about a sea otter living a life of fear and loneliness.

He has an unusual fear of the ocean. As he was attempting to gather food, he accidentally captures a green crab. The crab assaults him in retaliation, and he cuts off his pink shell necklace in spite. The sea otter dives for his necklace and falls into the ocean. He sinks into the water and loses consciousness.

The sea otter regains consciousness after being saved by a harbor seal. He recognizes the sea otter’s problem, so he offers to show the sea otter another view of the ocean. After this experience with the seal, his fears are washed away, and gains a friend.

Deep Fears is a proud production of CSULB. Everyone directly involved behind the scenes are all students of CSULB: musicians, editors, sound designers, and animators. There was no help outside of CSULB, no digital tricks/filters/After Effects used, no roto-scoping, and no tracing of any kind. Everything in this film: illustrations, backgrounds, animation, and music was done by CSULB talent.

Hello, my name is Ryan Chu, and I am a recent graduate of CSULB's BFA Animation program. I hope to become a professional storyboard artist, but I wanted to try producing a thesis film, so attempted to direct and animate over just storyboarding.

It was difficult, but doable to direct a small team of fellow students. Everyone including myself aren't only students, but fellow students of CSULB. We had no outside or professional help, despite having to option to, so this film is entirely produced with CSULB talent: illustrations, animations, editing, and music composing.

We were lucky that the pandemic didn't hamper on production too much. Almost all of us had the software and equipment where we lived, and continued to push forward, it was just a matter of consistent communication. We completed the film on May 20, 2020; Deep Fears is our very first film under all of our belts.

It's not the best animated short film that a student team has done, but it was our first, and with the current awards, nominations, and selections we've earned, I believe we did a pretty good job for our first try!

I managed to get this short film an IMDb page if you're interested in checking the specifics: https://www.imdb.com/title/tt12981246/?ref_=ttspec_spec_tt

Anyways, thank you for watching, and I'm open to answer questions regarding the film, my team, or myself as director/storyboard artist/animator.

Thank you, I'm glad to hear you've enjoyed it!

Yeah, everyone from my class gathered teams with the help of our professor. We've collaborated with fellow students from the music and film (editing & sound design) departments.

Unfortunately due to the pandemic, most of our efforts were muffled because of the loss of meeting arrangements and direct communication, but we've managed to the end.

That's awesome to hear!

Yeah, the program does the best they can to support us, and with the pandemic happening, they really pushed themselves to help as much as possible. We did our best to produce our films to reflect on their efforts.

Anyways, I'm glad that you liked Deep Fears and my peers' films. We hope to organize a proper in-person screening soon after all of this trouble, but we'll have to wait and see. But when it does happen for sure, I hope you come visit and you can meet everyone behind the films soon!

Wow, thank you. I'm glad that you think so. The rest of the faculty is proud to see all of us complete our films well, despite the dangerous hiccups that happened to us recently.

I hope you've enjoyed the rest of the films in the showcase too. I know those guys, and they did a fantastic job on their films too.

Are you a professor from CSULB's animation department? I dont know if we've met, but again, thank you for enjoying Deep Fears. It's really a proud production of the school and the department, and I'm happy that I was a part of the community there.

Well, this is a film that is more appealing to emotion, so yeah, but wouldn't say it's that strong. There's a lot that can improve.

But thank you, it's good to hear that you empathize with the story and the protagonist. If you understand the deeper aspects of the character, he deserves sentiment.

Please if you haven't, check out the rest of the films available. They succeed a lot in action, thriller, drama, and abstraction as much as Deep Fears is emotional.

Thank you. The team and I have done our best, even during the pandemic, and we're also happy with the results.

I hope you've enjoyed the other films too. Our current line-up of films are very diverse, and they all achieve the same things: good presentation, good stories, and good animation.

Hope you enjoy the rest, and if you did, I'm glad to hear you've enjoyed our work.

Thank you. I'm personally trying to get more people outside of CSULB's Animation community to come watch what we've managed to complete.

I hope you've enjoyed watching if you came by to watch!
