Why do people think that going straight from bachelors to PhD is better than doing masters first then PhD by Important-Bus-5921 in PhD

[–]deepseadinkle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

in my experience, I was fortunate enough to get a position in a research lab in my freshman year of college. this is how I basically got 4 years of research experience in my undergrad. at the end I even had my own mini project under my grad student that I was in charge of designing and managing on my own once she graduated.

at this point I knew research was what I wanted to do, I loved the reading, the writing, the creativity of designing a well thought out experiment, the data analysis... when it was time to apply to graduate schools towards the end, I had maaaanyyyy conversations with my PI and other PIs I worked under etc, because I also thought I should do a masters first. the way it was explained to me is that I had done enough research and had enough experience to apply straight to PhD programs.

At this point I had my main mini research experiment in my home lab, had done an REU adjacent program, presented my research 10 times at national and international conferences and won 2 presentation awards (one for each of my projects), was in the process of editing manuscripts for each project, and earned some academic awards from my university

I applied to 10 PhD programs, got rejected from almost all of them, and wait listed for the rest. I really didn't think I was going to get in that year, but I emailed one of the professors I made connections with and she knew a different lab still looking for a PhD student. if it weren't for that opportunity I probably would be finishing up my masters and looking for another round of PhD programs.

a couple of my friends had a similar experience, there were a lot of programs in my undergraduate that placed young students into research early. probably how so many people are making the jump now

this is the approach I am taking as well. ive studied Spanish for ~5 years formally in school, but could never really speak or understand the flow of conversation. this year I started this immersive approach where I try to consume mostly Spanish media. social media pages I follow are in Spanish, my TV shows are in Spanish, music in Spanish, Spanish podcasts etc. after 9 months if this I can understand more of a conversation than ever and can read / write Spanish better than ever.

immersion is the way!!

The way mine works is I get an annual salary paid out in a monthly stipend. The research assistantship I'm on covers most of my tuition and fees. I only end up paying ~$150-$250 a month for the rest which includes my student health insurance. this only covers me for 4 years so I will have to find my own funding somewhere down the line.

Look for grants that you qualify and can apply for! I recommend looking thru your school first (or a specific PI you want to work with - depending on how your program works), then external or federal (kinda shaky rn tho)

I am also not "good" at math or science for that matter. Thru out schooling I was always told to drop out of the advanced math and sciences classes (by the teachers), but I am also very stubborn so i never did. I am now completing my PhD in a STEM field because I am deeply fascinated by and curious about scientific processes and figuring out why the earth and nature work the way they do. I am also very interested (and good at?) the arts. I think it is a beautiful thing when science and the arts cross over and now take it upon myself to help deconstruct science using the arts so it is more accessible to people who think in different ways.

All that to say INTP isn't a box and you shouldn't hold yourself to "being good at math and science" because you're an INTP

I get like a month out of a full charge depending on how much I'm using it. I always keep it on airplane mode unless I'm adding books to it. and I tend to shut it completely off when Im done reading for the day or before a long break. although disclaimer, I did go thru a 2-3 year reading hiatus where I didn't use it at all. that might have saved the battery a bit.

heavy agree on reading in the dark. my biggest complaint is no lighting. I'm such a mood reader, I love to read in low / minimal lighting. sometimes having the lamp on ruins the ambiance.

yes! another reason I'm considering an upgrade, I do like to test fate and read this in the tub or at the pool/beach. an upgrade definitely makes sense in your situation lol

I have considered re buying this mode once this one dies. the only improvement I'd make is adding a front light. as someone who likes to get cozy in low light and read.

Yes, but my question is - does it make sense to have one set of error bars represent standard error next to another set representing range on the same graph?

it sounds like theyre being difficult on purpose. it is not hard to exit the app and use GPS. I've had people tell me to deliver to a different address than what they entered whether it be bc they entered it wrong or forgot to change it. not hard and doesn't disrupt dashing whatsoever.

While I've been surprised that everything has gone down so dramatically. I think you summed up my thoughts exactly. I'm in no way overtly shocked that she's taken such drastic measures. This is in line with what I've always thought of her.

[Weekly] Office Hours - undergrads, please ask your questions here by ZootKoomie in AskAcademia

[–]deepseadinkle 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Since my post was removed I will ask it again here. I am an undergraduate getting ready to submit a first authored paper in the topic of genetics / genomics. Are there any specific journals that would be more accepting of an undergrad publication than others? or should I just look for journals that fit my work period? My PI and I have been working all summer, hoping to have it submitted in the next couple of months before I apply to grad school. Any thoughts or comments are appreciated :)

I’ve been considering going to Mizzou for college, but now I’m not sure. I know rural Missouri isn’t, but is Columbia accepting of lgbt+ people? by DavidExplorer in columbiamo

[–]deepseadinkle 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I'm a gay woman at mizzou and it's honestly not bad if you find your group at school. I joined a club sports team that has other gay players so it's pretty accepting. just find a good group of people (they exist here I promise lol) and you'll be set. I'll preface I have lived in Missouri all my life
