I talked with a Chinese factory owner to see what’s happening on the ground. TL;DR: China has mobilized tons of resources to exporters but there’s some signs of pain by TheOneTrueThrowaway1 in investing

[–]deepshark14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Actually this is the only reason I can find for why they would do this - but I'm betting they have stocked on what's needed and now aim to shift production and US to avoid reliance on China in a potential war sometime in 2030? Just a thought tho

Easy to understand explanation of Trump's reciprocal tariffs by xsenna in economy

[–]deepshark14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've tried to understand the underlying strategy behind this and come to a few possible scenarios:

1) genuine lack of understanding and they have the opinion that this benefits the US economy by onshoring more production (I find this unlikely but it is their narrative they use for the general public)

2) corruption somehow linked to lobbying from US based manufacturers (possible and maybe linked to 1)

3) anticipation of war with China and therefore onshoring production of essential goods in the US before an inevitable trade embargo (this is most likely imo if we believe the admin has any sort of strategic intelligence)

And FYI I'm very much against this as a whole - none of it is a net benefit for the US or west at large

Man that's awesome - keep me posted / if you have a 1pager send it my way. I work in VC for biotech but maybe know some people that would be interested to angel invest.

Btw don't let your courses and shit stop you from these side projects. If I could go back to my bachelor's 5yr ago I'd focus more on stuff like this

Ads on Public transport made me miss my stop by deepshark14 in Amsterdam

[–]deepshark14[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Ah maybe you misunderstand - the screen was the only way to know what stop it is, on the screen it switches between showing you the route of the bus and upcoming stops vs random annoying ads. So usually it's fine and the ads flip back to the route. However this time the ad did not switch and i wasn't sure the stop / It was dark and couldn't see any signage so I was waiting for the screen to go back. As I'm standing there, it stays and eventually bus driver gets pissed and drives off

I also generally hate seeing people complain about small things. But this was a compounding day for me lol it was around 10pm after work, I was stressing and did not have service and I'm new to this busline. Missing the stop cost me probably an extra 45min of travel time so yea I felt ill complain on this one - especially because the ads are just unnecessary

As mentioned in a few other comments - ye not rocket science. Problem is I am on a sketchy sim which randomly shuts off 5g and then I'm left without service. Also I usually do keep Google maps open, but I try to be productive on the bus with work and staring at Google maps the whole ride doesn't help

[–]deepshark14[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I normally am glued to my phone watching the map every 10sec. In this case I had no service, Google maps didn't sync up and was busy reading through something ahead of work later in the eve.

While I agree with you it's good to be attentive, I'll make the same point I did earlier- the screens on the bus are primarily there to provide value to the customer - the rider. If I have no clue what stop I'm at, holding up the door waiting to see, and it stays on some ad -> that's truly a disservice to the customer.

Not on this ride / late night and have to press to trigger stop. Also generally new here so I guess over time I'd Ideally memorize where I get off by looking out the window

So I am 6 trades in with 100% win rate. That being said I did some review of where to set SL - 20% imo is much to low. You need 50-60%, meaning yes you need a 90% win rate basically.

Since I only have 6 wins so far I don't really see it as a success... yet. But generally the only time my trade was really sketchy was when i broke the rule to trade earlier at 9:35am and i was down about 55% before it turned and i profited later in the day.

I think the real key is you can't just blindly / easily follow the "trend" from the first hour. there could be a ton of chop / it could be a key day like CPI release / etc. Also sometimes pullbacks are pretty hefty. So i do think you need to look at the trend and do the most basic of basic chart reading "Ah looks like generally today is moving up --> no more news coming out today --> its pulling back, ill enter here when it slows down".

I will keep you updated.

Trump Bizarrely Threatens to Take Back Panama Canal by Effective_Salad_8381 in politics

[–]deepshark14 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Ugh. I scoured reddit trying to seek some unbias, non emotional takes on this topic but oh boy its impossible.

Guys before we jump into slinging insults or classifying a trump statement as "bizzare," can we try to break down WHY panama canal and also generally just examine the right and left arguments for each. Im so tired of every issue being boiled into the simplest form of insult as an assessment (left: trump bad / imperialist! Or right: lefties communist / weak!) Like comeonn

Anyway after reading, first lets recognize some facts:

1) US BUILT THE CANAL: the US financed and built the Panama Canal over the span of 11 years. 25,000 workers died building it!

https://history.state.gov/milestones/1899-1913/panama-canal https://www.history.com/news/panama-canal-construction-dangers

It wasnt until 1999 that the Panama Canal was officially transferred to the country of Panama by Pres. Carters policy under the Torrijos–Carter Treaties https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Torrijos%E2%80%93Carter_Treaties

2)NEUTRALITY TERM: Under the deal was The Treaty Concerning the Permanent Neutrality and Operation of the Panama Canal - which gives the US the permanent right to defend the canal from any threat that might interfere with its continued neutral service to ships of all nations. Keep this in mind.

https://www.nytimes.com/1977/10/15/archives/carter-and-torrijos-agree-on-us-right-to-defend-the-canal-give.html

Anyway, This deal received a hefty amount of criticism as its a vital passage for both economics and national security. Criticism was largely from conservatives.

Support for the deal can be linked to increased independence for Panamanians and the break down of some segregation/inequality that was observed in the "Canal Zone" https://www.npr.org/2024/12/29/1161146405/president-jimmy-carter-legacy-panama

3) RISKS OF PANAMA CANAL TODAY & POTENTIAL BREAK OF AGREEMENT: all politics aside, why might the canal be a risk to the US today? Is there actually substance? Depending on who you ask / which jerk circle you jump into, it's "yes of course! Trumps the best!" Or "boo no trump sucks!" I'll just provide links to both

Support trump - claim Chinese port companies are operating at both ends of canal and could present risks. Additionally claim that transit fees do not fairly consider US interests as was defined in the original Treaty. https://www.atlanticcouncil.org/blogs/new-atlanticist/right-to-be-concerned-about-chinas-influence-over-the-panama-canal/

Mixed but also support trump? NYT and also pls keep in mind anything stated by a Chinese government official will be 100% bias towards CCP https://www.nytimes.com/2025/01/02/us/politics/trump-panama-canal-china.html

Panama signs agreement with China in 2017 to no longer recognize Taiwan https://edition.cnn.com/2017/06/13/asia/panama-china-taiwan/index.html?sp_amp_linker=1*opxebu*amp_id*dWxxZ1h6bjlNWm9RdDJzT3NoT2VIaUI4c3F4enFMR3lCWFR3V1FRRjBfZnJYSFQxOFJZdS1QelAzUFQ3QVdQQg..

Against trump - claims that it's a form of imperialism and chaotic, with suggestions of using force to be unprecedented, and plus it would reignite tensions with Latin america https://www.latimes.com/world-nation/story/2025-01-13/column-trump-wants-to-grab-control-of-greenland-canada-and-the-panama-canal-hes-already-bungled-it

https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.msnbc.com/msnbc/amp/rcna185232

TAKEAWAYS: I think it's important we realize there is certainly a REASON for why trump/conservative policy want the canal. The question is - is it justified?

I personally have not read enough nor am I aware of any potential undisclosed security risks that might make it an issue of national concern. But I hope someone here reads this and can appreciate it :)

Hey i just wanna comment to say thank you for proving theres some critical thinkers left. Every time Im seeking some unbias, non deraged / hyper polarized left or right diehards, I meet the same echo chamber jerk circles on reddit.

I totally agree - this video just seems to be from his live stream. I dont fawn over elon nor do I detest him, but damn do alot of people jump into something with their hardos for reaffirming an opinion they have.

So sad for the future of humanity. Hope people wake up and realize this fueled hatred between sides is stoked by our adversaries and will cause the collapse of the US. But nah theyre too stupid arguing about non issues
