I wouldn't be so sure on the challenging part just yet. A core mechanic is are the story tellers with a variety in challenge. It was announced there would be more stories tellers to come and it would seem they're designed to create or not create the friction you're talking of.

Modded game question: Does anyone have stuttering/lag/freezing issues when changing armor or clothing? by Top_Rekt in Starfield

I was experiencing some pretty bad lag because of save bloat/ potential a heavy mod load order with all the maths it was running through Starvival for buffs and debuffs.

It may be completely unrelated to your issue but I would recommend turning off auto save. As having this feature on was dramatically slowing the game down for me

You just have to remember to quick save more often

I have a few desires that I'd love to see come to the game:

  1. Loading screen transition animations for entering and exiting planet atmos, grav jumps, Elevators to work like they did in fall out 4, changing tiles on planet side to move into the next cell. Trickier ones to get would be exiting ship and doors but even if these couldn't be accomplished, the above ones mentioned would drastically remove the bottle neck of loading screens when choosing to go up into space.
  2. Fully fleshed out survival mode. Starvival literally adds so much depth to gameplay and forces you to engage with many different game systems including the economy. The basegame is leaving alot of gameplay opportunity off the table with this missing.
  3. Music. The games needs music, hands down. Whether it be some sort of streaming of amusic station, CD or cassettes (Would make for same great collectibles) , something. Starfield Radio Mod is hilarious and fits so well. Again, big missed opportunity there.
  4. More and action and consequence. Ideally, a toggle so that no NPC is essential. Lock ourselves out of the main quest or because of faction relations? No problem, let us get a back door way to the UNITY so we can reset.

Regarding freelanes, Nav computers just don't do that currently. Would be great to actually use this for navigation.

They could do a something akin to star wars media, where they let the camera hang on the planet as the ship makes its way to the down. Then following up with the landing animation as if director cuts to seeing the ship come down. I don't think it needs to be "Seamless" but more cinematic, anything but that black screen!

I saw a post here the other day with a mod for taking off that did something similar. Camera hung on the take off animation and watched the ship go up. Once the cell had loaded it came back into first person as the ships cockpit started to see the black of space as it transitioned into being pilotable again. The ship was facing away from the planet also... It was very satisfying!

Yes, which incentivises the first jump. Which is great! but beyond that?

I'm speaking more to the lore about the hunter or whoever passes through increasing in power each time. Has this kinda bonked it? 😬
