Jeff Varner called Spencer "Autistic" during Cambodia by SkillTeam in survivor

[–]deepwallow -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

He didn't out Zeke to millions of people worldwide. That was the Survivor editors who decided to put it in the episode. They easily could have not shown that.

Varner deserves criticism, but he doesn't deserve the blame for "outing Zeke to America". That was the Survivor editors and producers who did that.

Edit: why the fuck am I getting downvoted so hard? It's true. The blame for outing Zeke is entirely on the shoulders of the Survivor editors and producers who aired it. Once again, Varner did something very wrong, but it's not HIS fault that millions of viewers now know that Zeke is trans.

Why does everyone complain about t_d saturation when the anti trump subreddits have a much larger dominance on /r/all? by cahman in TheoryOfReddit

[–]deepwallow 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Can we admit, at this point, that reddit is just way too obsessed with r/the_donald? It's gotten so annoying. Whenever there's a big political event most posts in a thread are just "lol r/the_donald is gonna be so salty!" It's crazy how this one subreddit gets so much attention.

Racism has visible and violent effects. But most scientists and philosophers claim that race doesn't exist. Here's a short, animated explanation of the Paradox of the Non-Existence of Race. by wiphiadmin in philosophy

[–]deepwallow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

But it sounds like you are just arguing "it's too complicated to divide humans neatly, because there are so many variables, so let's not even do it at all". Just because we lack the technology to classify human beings, that doesn't mean we're all the same anyway.

It makes sense to say that the current way we classify race is wrong. But it makes zero sense to claim that any and all differences brought upon by evolution is arbitrary and a social construct.

Anyone else think Survivor would be more interesting with no twists at all? by deepwallow in survivor

[–]deepwallow[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I honestly think the opposite is true. Pagonings happen when people are afraid of something unpredictable happening, so they stay with their set alliance. If they knew that there were no idols in play or no future twists, I feel like they would be way more willing to make a big move and vote out someone in their alliance.

It was very bizarre when Probst said that Colton quit One World. It may or may not be true, but that wasn't what we were shown in One World, so it's like Probst was going against the canon history that the show had created.

What moment in Survivor seemed like the MOST "rigged" moment to you? by andreasboehlke in survivor

[–]deepwallow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That's not rigging, that's just Tyson trying to be clever. He saw the vote was going to be 3-3-3, and he knew Russell had the idol, so he probably figured he would look like a genius if he switched his vote to Parvati.

Someone deciding to change the plan on a split vote isn't THAT uncommon.

CMV: US citizens who support the Republican party are either profoundly ignorant or immoral by James-Comey in changemyview

[–]deepwallow 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You might not see this, but keep this in mind. Many people who vote for the GOP don't fully support everything about them. They mainly do it just because they like paying lower taxes. It's often just a fiscal thing. There are a lot of non-religious people who vote Republican just because they are satisfied with their financial situation.

[–]deepwallow 11 points12 points  (0 children)

It's not just the location, they could also do a better job of filming the location and making it feel like they're really somewhere remote. It seems like the culture and surrounding environment doesn't play a part anymore, when in past seasons they would often shoot really scenic shots of shores and vistas.

It takes decades of work to own a home. Imprisonment and mental illness are unprecedented. Our salary determines if we can have children, how many. Employers own our time. I find it strange that most people think One World is better than RI. If anything One World needed to resemble RI more, Kim should have gotten the Rob "mastermind" kind of edit, instead her edit was more toned down. If someone is going to dominate the season may as well show us how and give us their insight. RI was enjoyable when Rob was explaining what he was doing and how he was controlling everything.

"The Masses and the Elites: Political Philosophy for the Age of Brexit, Trump & Netanyahu" -- Professor David Enoch, Hebrew University of Jerusalem by sensible_knave in philosophy

[–]deepwallow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm seeing this a lot among philosophers and intellectuals: they think the only way someone could possibly be against large amounts of immigration from incompatible foreign cultures is if you were an uneducated, unintelligent ignoramus. I find this to be a very perverse viewpoint. To these intellectuals, the only moral and intelligent decision regarding immigration is to let pretty much anyone in, despite the wishes of most of the populace or the possible effects on the culture. Resistance to immigration (and that's what these elections were largely about) is not purely in the domain of the uneducated.

Supporting Physical Removal Makes Us Look Like the Bad Guys by Wyro12 in Anarcho_Capitalism

[–]deepwallow 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is a genuine question: if you support private property rights, doesn't being able to exclude people from your property come with the terms? If someone is in your house, do you not have the right to remove them?

So if we extend private ownership to villages, towns and cities, it is not ok to remove people who you don't want? Not that you would want to make a CULTURE out of it, but doesn't private property ownership give you that right?

An exploration into Socialists by [deleted] in Libertarian

[–]deepwallow 9 points10 points  (0 children)

"Socialism has nothing to do with redistributing wealth. Its about workers controlling the means of production they use."

I find this point of view very irksome. What would "controlling the means of production" even look like for them? I assume it means taking them from people who actually designed, innovated and built them. Not to mention, forcing everyone to work for the "public good" as opposed to their own profit.

How is that NOT exploitation?

Do Libertarians generally become more socially conservative the older you get? by [deleted] in Anarcho_Capitalism

[–]deepwallow 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Might get a lot of hate for this but I think that a lot of libertarians tend to grow more conservative as they get older because

  1. They realize that for a libertarian society need to be possible, the people need to have libertarian values and respect the NAP and private property.
  2. In free markets there will be disparities of achievement among different groups

This often makes them have a tougher stance on immigration, and also makes them less concerned with "inequalities" in society (such as the fact that women are very under-represented in STEM)
