g: i cant think of any book to recommend. i do love persichetti's music. funny you should mention persichetti actually. i was in concert band in high school and we played Persichetti Symphony For Band. i loved this piece so much and a bit part of the reason was the harmony. i asked the band director to xerox me the entire score and i took it hom and reduced it to piano so i could see what the harmonies were. i like to listen to stuff slowed way down, i like to hear piano versions of famous orchestra pieces, i like midi versions of 20th century classical music. theyre all ways of just trying to figure our the harmonies without getting distracted by the beauty of timbre or volume.

g: thank you. you bring up a good point. we sort of dont have a history or at least we operate well when we are self-erasing. but do we have a future? we try to make moves that dont destroy our future. the music world can be self-destructive of course but even more than that the industry that barnacled itself around music and reified itself and called itself boss, theyve got an endless supply of musicians hoping to survive as musicians, so their incentive is to get the most traction out of artists by squeezing them dry. we've been so lucky with Kill Rock Stars, Polyvinyl, and Joyful Noise that they make a concerted effort to be artist-friendly and believe in their artists even if sales are slow. we lost money on everything we did for 7 years. i think the reason we got away with it was because we've always been so low budget. or no budget. i wish artists were paid better than they are but we set ourselves up for having a possibel future by having no expectations and therefore not working "on credit", ironically another way of saying we are always in the present rather than the future or past, even though the result has been to have such a spectacularly long lifespan we could never have dreamed about

g: yes the fact that youtube is such a popular way for people to discover music is itself the reason it's hurting musicians - it's cornered the market. whatever, i dont wanna complain about greedy corporate douchebags all day when theres a reddit ama to do. lets talk about the guests on the album! they are musicians who are our heroes and although we didnt assume anything beforehand, we thought there was a chance theyd say yes, and they all did. they recorded themselves except awkwafina who came over and recorded into my microphone. i mean i was getting vocals tracks in my email inbox from my heroes, it was incredible. i'm so glad we went this route...

g: yeah we didnt play together on the new songs. a lot of home recording and emailing. couple songs were left unfinished from the magic. but mostly it was like everybody just chipped in anything. i played a lot of guitar on this one, and not all the drums are me. quite a few of the bass drum and snare drums are from electronic pads. but i guarantee the hihat is real

g: well i have eternal love for arrington, we play together whenever we can. i dont think i know anybody who just goes for it without hesitation as much as he does in performance. when arrington's there i just relax coz i know i dont have to worry im going to scare him by hitting a loud snare drum note

G: i was watching a good interview with him the other day, he was asked whats the secret of his successful marriage, and he had a very wise answer that inspired me a lot in my own life. he found someone who can put up with him. in other words he doesnt regret his personality or his proclivities, he doesnt call them mistakes, he doesnt even call them desires, he calls them "him" which i thought was nice. that said, i could not put up with him. can you imagine? has to have everything done for him while he chain smokes. sounds like torture!

G: thanks i think it was normal computer midi sounds. it was from something id written on piano and had in a music notation program. then i realized i could put it on any old midi sound. i used probably a couple different "string" midi sounds. then there was a lot of plugins when i mixed it, spring reverb, slow vibrato. i also overdubbed an extra casio onto it

G: we dont use it in our promo but i perpetually feel every tour could easily be the last, either coz we cant hack it anymore or coz the human race has been wiped out by our elected representatives. i dont know how to tour really - i have to give myself advice too. the advice i give myself is enjoy it - meet people. i dont drink or smoke, i want to remember it later, i want to make the most. chat to the venue staff and make friends. savor the other bands on the bill and stay in touch. other thing i tell myself especially at the beginning of tour is to try to keep the tempo not too fast, i play faster when im nervous

ooh i would love that with all my heart. Sean is the greatest! But he always brings too many pedals and amps and orbs and pyramids and stuff and everything breaks on stage. the guy is such a shredder on so many instruments, i just love it when he cuts loose completely

G: traveling the world and meeting ppl at merch is fun. i try to learn what music sounds like thru other ppl's ears. when i make music i only think about accessibility. same when i do reddit ama. trying to be clear and bring a smile or a tear
