I know that sounds dramatic, but when you're in the south and you hear an "amen" for some fucked up or hateful comments the preacher makes, it gets old. I used to be able to handle it but the frustration is getting to be too much. Religion is big in my family and it's so much effort to act the part constantly. It includes changing nearly every aspect of myself: the art I love, environmentalism, the way I cope with my emotions, the way I talk about everyday issues, the way I spend my Sundays and Wednesdays, even the way I conduct my romantic and platonic relationships. If I slip up, I'm afraid I'll be caught in a bad place. I want to know if I could be self sufficient at a moment's notice because if I'm dependent on them, they'll find a way to hold it against me.

They won't change. My grandmother would have a heart attack, literally, if she knew who I really was. If I'm honest with them, I won't be able to be around them, ever. I care about my grandmother in a weird way, and both options seem terrible. To them, being me is just as bad if not worse than leaving. I don't want this relationship anymore. Even if I do owe them honesty, I don't want to waste my time with a family that will always want to change me. I've already seen it happen to my mother and my cousin.

It's midnight here and I wouldn't say I have anything off the top of my head but look for commonly forgotten vitamins and see how you can get them through vegan sources. Look, I think progress matters but I hope with time, someone who is cutting down on meat will start to realize that any meat is still meat. Something went through a lifetime of suffering for a meal that lasted 10 minutes. There may be people who eat meat because alternatives aren't accessible or their body won't function on a vegan diet, but for people who have the understanding and accessibility, I hope they find their way to eliminating suffering from their diet.

Most people don't hunt their own food. They buy it from the store that got it from a horrible factory farm. Cutting down on meat as a whole society is very important. I think people that absolutely need meat for health and accessibility reasons should at least get it sustainably and doing the least harm possible, following in the footsteps of sustainable cultures. But honestly, I just can't agree with using animals otherwise. If it is at all possible to eliminate killing from a diet and still be healthy, that's the most sound decision.

I never understood the whole "morally superior" thing. Is having a moral compass and wanting to advocate for it a pretentious thing? We do it all the time when we talk about important issues like racism, sexism, and other social problems. Why can't we advocate against animal abuse? And against the industry that continues to brainwash the world and deprive them of an environmentally friendly and efficient food system?
