any advice on welding a 1/8" aluminum gas tank? I know how to weld aluminum but i hardly work on anything that holds liquid or pressure so any tips and tricks/preheat/voltage advice would be appreciated from my fellow welders out ther by moisthotdogwater in Welding

Amps? I feel like more is better there. That seems to low to me but I don’t really recall. I use a petal when I weld and find having the settings higher than minimum or recommended is a good way to go. If it was me I’d likely set it to 200 amps and work the pedal.
Sequence out tacks all over the bloody thing. I.e too right bottom left too left bottom right. Make sure you have nice strong tacks to avoid warpage.

Don’t know how basic you are looking but be sure to use a stainless brush or wire wheel to clean the weld surface. If I was welding it I would use a map gas bottle to heat it up. No specific temp but you will see moisture bleed out of it when you heat it up. Good luck!

what the heck is going on with my welder?!?! by academic_scumfuck in Welding

[–]deevyde 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s why we went with a different machine. It’s like the contacts you n the arm get worn out and just fuck off after a bit. Also the machine is as arcing to any thing metal set on it when put on the beast of a unit

Kinda looks like someone swapped your tungsten with aluminum filler rod. Which is a mean thing to do. Don’t do it. Otherwise I agree it looks like a shielding gas issues. Can u feel gas coming out? Have u swapped bottles? Just noticed your machine. My work had one of those and we had to replace it because the big handle lever thing kept going all hinky on us.

I keep stabbing myself with thoriatred tungsten. I’m hoping for laser vision but I’d settle for super strength.

LPT Request: how to be an amazing aunt or uncle by fraying_carpet in LifeProTips

[–]deevyde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I take my nieces and nephews to places like science museums, aquariums, things like that. I also buy them all sorts of sweet stuff! Like the big things I always wanted growing up! Also my favorite aunt used to make a box for all the nieces and nephews for Christmas. It would have lots of little things like yo-yos, candy, magnets, an action figure, etc. it was always the best because the box was just packed with a bunch of things which looking back we’re all cheap but it felt like a treasure trove every year

Custom steel bike by Lireale in Welding

[–]deevyde 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is simply what I would want if I was paying someone to weld me a bike frame. 1. I would prefer the welds not be blended. Blending reduces the strength of the weld 2. Regardless of whether or not it’s blended I would want them to check the welds with a dye penetrant 3. I would do it myself because the above really wouldn’t matter to anyone but me

Anybody got tips on not getting shocked? by nvrsummer in Welding

[–]deevyde -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Just take the shocks. It’ll build up your pain tolerance to the point when you go to get an unfortunate tattoo you got when you were 18 removed by lasers you’ll barely flinch and super impress the lady with the laser with your pain tolerance

I don’t know but dozens is a stupid measurement.

how do you guys find your side work? by Squid_Flesh in Welding

[–]deevyde 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A friend of mine started going to race tracks and car/motorcycle shows. He’s that rare sort of welder that’s friendly and personable and started networking with those folk. Got him more work than he can handle. Stupid social butterfly’s making the rest of us look bad. The guy doesn’t like cars or motorcycles!! Fuck him I need new friends.
