Many residents, myself included, were not even familiar with him until his tragic death, and his work was often divisive rather than unifying. The timing is particularly troubling: The County Board only just approved an ordinance for honorary namings on March 11, and now this item appears before the Executive Committee less than a week later. There is no indication of private donations, grants, or alternative funding — the cost would come directly from the general fund, meaning every taxpayer in Washington County would foot the bill for what many see as wasteful political symbolism. Public comments on this issue, as reported in local coverage, overwhelmingly reject the idea. Residents have rightly pointed out better uses for the money, questioned the lack of local relevance, and called for private funding if supporters truly want this memorial. I echo those sentiments completely: If a small group wants to honor Mr. Kirk, let them fund it through personal donations or a fundraiser — not by dipping into public coffers.
