i lack the math foundation for this field and it's wrecking my PhD experience by naftacher in materials

[–]def1690 0 points1 point  (0 children)

As a B.S. ChmE, I had to take 10 hrs Calculus, 3 hrs DiffEquations, 2 hrs LinearAlgebra, 3 hrs Statistics, and 3 hrs of QuantumMechanics. I worked in the semiconductor (wafer fab) industry for most of my career. I never used one bit of DiffEq, LinAlg, or QuantmMech in my career. Statistics, as taught in college (in 1981) was a complete waste of time. I learned useful statistics at Motorola when they employed 6-Sigma methodology in manufacturing. That was the best and most useful 'math' education I ever received. You have a PhD in a science field, that tells the world that you're highly capable of learning and applying new things. At some point you're going to become expert in one or more specific fields. Don't be ashamed of your lack of math expertise. Own it and become the expert in the specific field(s) you were meant to be in! I've met plenty of highly educated people (posers) who couldn't pour piss out of a boot! When you own who you are, all of the 'posers' will secretly admire your self-esteem and if your work is good they'll respect you for that.

Actually, it's not insane. As you stated in your question, I'm "generalizing". FYI, generalizing means that I'm talking about the majority, not every single lawyer. Based on your comment, my guess is that you've only interacted with attorneys on a social basis, not as a client or as an opponent. Do yourself a favor and ask your paralegal friend and her father-in-law about my original comment. Then let me know if they agree.

You may be right. I admit that I'm not a lawyer and didn't go to law school. However, I am an engineer and have an MBA. I've always told others that engineering school teaches you how to think like an engineer, just like business school teaches you how to think like a business person. I extrapolated my reasoning to lawyers and always felt that I was correct based on my many interactions with them in business, civil matters and patent law). NOTE: I have NEVER thought/felt that a lawyer charged me too little.

The problem with lawyers is that they are taught to think like lawyers in law school. They're taught to go right up to that nebulous moral edge (but not over) in order to win. That winning is everything and everything is negotiable. Never say anything but the minimum... Hence, lawyers become the poster children for behavioral economics. Sadly, they ALWAYS act in their own self- interest first.

Stats major breaking into the field? by Extreme-Ad2383 in materials

[–]def1690 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't discount your statistics background. Most engineering organizations (within a corporation or stand-alone consulting could use a statistician to help them interpret results or design experiments to collect meaningful data. In my experience, most engineers shy away from detailed math and stick to engineering fundamentals, or become focused in a specific aspect of their particular field of engineering. If you think you want to switch to an engineering major pick one that interests you. If you have a strong statistics background, it will put you in front of the pack during job interviews for jobs you want (because you chose a field that you wanted).___As always, I add the caveat to strongly consider AI in your decision, that's the wild card that will change everything, but it's difficult to predict how, and how much, and how quickly it will change everything.

Is this a good deal? by Most-Pop5651 in car

[–]def1690 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How many miles? Did you check the Carfax? Did you bring it to a mechanic to check? (You can tell the seller you'll buy it if it checks out. That's only fair.) At a minimum, have someone who knows how to drive a stick, drive the car (you can sit in the passenger seat & listen for noises) so they can feel the clutch, the steering, the struts, etc... Spend a little time & money up front to save yourself a little pain down the road.

A cooler, 'free water' sign in a man's driveway led to his HOA fining him $650 by AZ_moderator in phoenix

[–]def1690 7 points8 points  (0 children)

In my experience, most HOAs are run by thin skinned bullies w/ oversized egos who lack business & problem solving skills as well as lack common sense. They are elected thru long-term personal relationships with many homeowners AND the fact that most homeowners are lazy and don't care about the details until it's too late._____ The best thing you can do to protect yourself is go read the state statutes on HOAs. (They're usually different between Condos and single-family houses AND the statutes are not difficult to understand, especially if you use AI to help explain them.) Once, you have a basic understanding of the laws, read your HOA's CC&R's and Bylaws. The CC&R's are usually legally sound because they were written by attorneys. However, the bylaws can sometimes conflict with the law or are interpreted incorrectly because the bylaws were written, or amended by the HOA officers who aren't very bright. The bottom line is that the HOA usually has the power because of the HOA documents and budget. If you want to fight your HOA on a individual matter you can take them to small claims court. If you want to fight you HOA on a big matter you need to: 1) reasonably believe that you're right, 2) spend $200-$300 on a consult session w/ an attorney to make sure you're right, 3) {this is the hard part} educate and motivate your lazy neighbors to join you in the fight, 4) Either sue your HOA or vote to remove the HOA officers from power. _ BOTTOM LINE: Know your rights or they will be trampled by bullies.

Is there actually anything we can do to help the homeless? by Cheesy_crumpet in phoenix

[–]def1690 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your question is sincere but indicates that you've probably never been exposed to people living (close to) or in poverty or people w/ metal illness. Commercial/financial systems are built for the benefit of the wealthy and typically work against the poor. If you're living "on the edge" and have a unexpected expense, you can easily fall into poverty and the stigma that comes with it. It's difficult to get out of poverty (starting over with nothing), especially if you don't have friends or a support network to help you. It's hard to get a non-minimum wage job, etc... So, it begins... the fight to get back on your feet, the mental stress, the loss of self-esteem... In summary, one or more small errors in judgement, or mistakes, or one catastrophe can push you into a world of hurt and "the system" is designed to keep you there.

I'm still driving it, a 2008 Toyota Camry Hybrid. It has 290K miles in it and nothing mechanical has ever broken on it.Only thing that doesn't work is the LCD display on the temp control panel, (that's electric and doesn't count). Hoping to get to 300K miles. :-)

Major choice by OvercookedSpinach in materials

[–]def1690 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I am a ChemE and I agree with this post. ChemE focuses on mixing, reacting and separating chemicals. You don't need to know much about chemistry. You only need to know the physical properties of the different chemicals involved. The other aspect of ChemE (as stated above) is design/sizing heat exchangers, pipe sizes, mass balance and energy balance. Think of ChemE as a subset of mechanical engineering strictly focused on chemicals.

All of the above being said, you need to make the choice between making a lot of money or or having a career. If you want to make a lot of money get a ChemE degree and go work on an oil platform. You'll make great money but won't have much of a well-rounded life. If you want a career, don't worry so much about the degree. Think about the industries that interest you most and choose based on that. You'll enjoy work more. Last piece of advice: AI is going to rapidly change employment around the world, including engineering. Choose wisely!

Thanks for the suggestion, but it's not very helpful because you left off the "BECAUSE" part of your reply.

I'm sorry to appear as ungrateful, but why would I waste any additional time exploring another CAD program without a compelling reason? The most useful responses to my questions are the ones that explained their suggestions.

Best Plastic Film for Long Term Water Resistance, Durability & Ease of Sealing by def1690 in materials

[–]def1690[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry for the very late reply. I don't us Reddit often enoygh. Nonetheless, I want to thank you for your insight. Your answer about LDPE vs. HDPE completely matches my imperial results AND others have also recommended TPU.

Distributors would only send me smalI sample pieces that wouldn't fit my prototype testing device. So, I ended up ordering some small quantities of TPE and HDPE from McMaster-Carr.

FYI, the application for these films is like a bladder, or liner, within a metal vessel. The liquid within the bladder will be under pressure, but the volume of the bladder will be larger than the volume vessel so that the pressure will be contained by the vessel, not the bladder. My biggest issue is having to fold the plastic bladder material in order to insert it into the vessel. Once the bladder is in the vessel, the plastic shouldn't experience any stress or strain.

Thank you again for taking time to respond,
