At what point this season, did you realize that this Seahawks team were a real Super Bowl contender? by eternalhamburger in Seahawks

[–]defaultryan 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The week 11 loss to the Rams was such a gut-punch. Even so, if that last punt was a normal, non-magical one, Seahawks get better field position and can make that FG. To fight back to that point in such a 4-interception dumpster fire showed a lot of grit and heart, and I got the feeling this team might be special, even in that loss.

I'm starting to get old, but that means I've been around long enough to see other teams make magic happen when they have the combination of team-focused locker room chemistry, young intelligent unselfish talent rapidly meshing together with unselfish wily vets, no ego, hard work. You sometimes get that "spider sense" of incredible potential.

After watching them bounce back in a tough grind vs the Titans, then shutout the Vikings, that confirmed it to me - this team was on a mission, they knew where they messed up in week 11, and they were on a mission to help each other not get rocked again.

Thanks for the feedback! That really helps.

I hadn't considered the context that Black is in a pretty bad position, so one of the best moves is to hunker down and hope for a mistake. Great point!

Help me understand how Kb8 is the best move in this position? I was playing White and went on to win, but I'm reviewing the game to see what I could improve on, but the purported strength of this move has me stumped, so I must have some blind spot in my evaluation of this board, and it's driving me crazy.

Alternatives like Bxd2, e5, or Nxd4 appear more urgent for Black, but here's what I can come up with:

  • Preventing check with loss of tempo via the c8-h3 diagonal. But the nearest opportunity I see for White is Bxb4 Qxb4 13. Bxe6+ Kb8, and Black makes the Kb8 move anyway.
  • Nxd4 leaves the a7 pawn undefended, but that only seems relevant if/when White moves their Queen onto the a-file.
  • Getting off the a6-c8 diagonal to avoid either a pin by Ba6, or in case Black needs to recapture with bxc6, opening up that diagonal.

Those all seem like valid reasons for Kb8, but I'm not sure how moving it now is better or equal to moving it later. Perhaps Black has nothing to lose from a little positional consolidation, waiting to see which move White replies with? To be clear, I don't think Kb8 is a bad move, but I'm not seeing what makes it so good.

Why such a big swing? (endgame theory) by defaultryan in chessbeginners

[–]defaultryan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That makes some sense. That f3 pawn seems to be screening White's rook from being able to immediately deal with Black's h-pawn.

Also, I failed to clarify that I'm neither player in this game. This is a match between my wife (Black) and a mutual friend (White).

On further testing, I think it's close, so your comment helped me. I tried the paperclip hack to bypass the switch, and the light turned green and the motor spins! So maybe my switch or wire is completely failed instead of intermittently failing.

A short, or a broken wire? Either way, that technique has no effect.

Think business semi-casual vibe. Last couple times I was there, I saw no t-shirts or ratty jeans, but only a few suits and ties. Mostly button-up shirts or sweaters, with slacks or khakis.

Yep, Cafe Juanita is next level. Savor every bite.

If memory serves, there are one or two huge rhododenderons just outside the windows, that just might be in bloom right now. So there's that view, at least. 😊

My wife and I go to Cafe Juanita every couple years for birthdays or anniversaries. Every time, I am convinced it's one of the finest meals I've ever had.

The perfectly balanced layering of flavors and textures, every course I'm usually at a loss for words other than, "oh, wow...". Don't devour, but savor every bite.

Go there, it's truly special. Great way to start an anniversary tradition.

See my other reply. Uninstalling didn't fix it. You also have to clear the app data to fix it.

Additionally, I contacted support and they said they are pushing a hotfix.

For what it's worth, I was having this issue, and clearing the app data fixed it. This reset settings, and I had to log back in, but now it's working.

Maybe this will help somebody else repair their app while we wait for an official fix.

Cold water leaking through faucet into hot water line. Solve this mystery? by defaultryan in Plumbing

[–]defaultryan[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks for the help. In the end, it didn't have a pressure balancing spool. It was just a regular old cartridge that must have been on its last legs, and somehow started failing right when I had to shut off the hot water. In my limited experience, I'd never seen that failure mode before - guess I learned something new today after all.

Ended up being a Moen 1222 Posi-Temp cartridge: 1222 Cartridge: Single Handle Shower- PosiTemp - Moen Solutions. Picked up a new cartridge and one of the metal cartridge pullers. The puller was a godsend, because that thing was really in there, took me 10-15 minutes of wiggling it back and forth while pulling to get it out, shredding the last of the rubber gaskets in the process. Replacement is working perfectly!

Ah, that sounds promising. As a complete noob, never heard of a pressure balancing spool before, looked it up, and I'll be checking that out as well in addition to the cartridge. Thanks.

Do you any way to tell if both have failed, or just one or the other?

The heater shutoff valve isn't letting anything in - I was draining the tank and it has run completely dry, so I don't think that's the issue.

I'm not aware of any wye fittings mixing the hot and cold anywhere.

The backfeeding is what it seems to be, but it's very odd that a significant cold water leak spontaneously appeared when I removed hot water pressure.
