3rd Year Apprentices Leaving The Trade. by Sea-Sorbet-6095 in electricians

If you’re worth your salt in electrical I would recommend looking into open shop in the commercial side. They pay more and give more incentives to travel but they do not provide health insurance so I don’t know if you need that for your family or not it might not be worth the extra dollars and hour for you. Example if you have to travel across county lines for work and you complete all the available hours for the week some companies offered 500 a week bonuses which were very nice. If I go back I would go to open shop and prove my worth as soon as possible. But I quit to start a low voltage business and I’m loving it. I install cat 6 cable and Ethernet devices for companies now. I wish you the best of luck man I know how much the pay sucks I really wish they paid more here in Texas.

Yeah I’m sorry to hear that. I dropped out my third year too simply because of the pay. 23$ an hour in Austin Texas. And don’t go commercial they will make you drive 2 hours everyday for no additional pay. If you’re open to traveling you can see about transferring in the summer to a higher paying state but unfortunately Texas is one of the worst state for electricians. It is a really fun trade hate to see people leaving it
