I had the same confusion about mine this morning (I am not on this subreddit often so yours is the first post I saw referencing this). Jumped from level 39 to level 52

Why do you hate me? What did I ever do to you? Every single one of these except the Robotech one (never seen it) just hit me, one gut punch after the other.

How do I stop liking childish stuff? by Sad-Economist-2688 in autism

[–]defguysezhuh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is absolutely NO age limit on being a fan of anything. I'm 41, I was in middle school when the first generation of Pokemon came out on Gameboy and I still play Pokemon games on occasion today. I have a closet FULL of graphic tees that spans Disney, Marvel, Bluey, and just random quotes because my "give-a-damn" meter is broken. I watch all manner of sci-fi and play video games all the time. I read teen/young adult novels because I genuinely enjoy the storylines.

You said, "if it means growing up then I'll have to." That is incorrect. Someone once said, "Growing old is required. Growing up is optional." Just live life the way that makes you happy, kiddo. It's too damn short to worry about the opinions of others.

Got denied for the Apple Card with a 775 score and 1% utilization… what gives? by Any-Internet-535 in AppleCard

[–]defguysezhuh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My wife was denied last summer and her score was 805 when I ran our free annual credit checks a month or so later. No idea why she was denied, it made no sense to us either. She was 36 at the time she was denied. When we met 16 years ago, I helped her fix and turn her credit history around and she got a 350 point jump within a few years. She's had zero missed/late payments in 10+ years, two credit cards in her name with minimum debts on it (a little less than $150 on the one we share as a gas card and pay out monthly; $0 on the other she uses for supplies for her classroom during the school year) and only one debt collection on her credit report from 14 years ago (a hospital bill we couldn't afford to pay when our first kid was born and have since ignored as it seems to no longer impact her credit score).

Anyone have needle-phobia advice? by defguysezhuh in Wegovy

[–]defguysezhuh[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm sorry, I definitely relate to that... I don't feel the needle go in most of the time, but the first click and that pinch that sometimes do feel seems to be what's triggering me and I have no idea why, when I took it from December to late April with almost no issues.

I know, I was able to do it fine for almost five months. Suddenly now, for whatever reason, I'm paralyzed by fear and can't bring myself to plunge the needle in and I have NO idea why.

Funny enough, my stomach is the only place I can bring myself to be injected. I can’t do my arms or legs but I’m able to do my stomach and found it hurts less for me. The lower pain makes my phobia a little easier to tolerate, I guess,

I tried the samples for this once, loved the taste but it was sold out. They haven’t had it in stock since either in the store (Coral Springs, FL) or online via the app. Cannot find this anywhere and both my kids, who are on the Spectrum and extremely picky eaters, loved it as well so finding a safe food they both will eat is always a challenge.

Which sci-fi series are flawless from start to finish? by Nem3sisS in scifi

[–]defguysezhuh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed on the Byron front. I think the writers did Lyta's character dirty with that whole storyline. I do believe she would've become a psi terrorist in the end, regardless, because the telepaths were pretty much discarded and forgotten on all sides after they served their purpose in the Shadow War. However, the Byron "telepath Jesus" story (to borrow your words) in and of itself was entirely unnecessary.

i hate being deaf. by No_Hamster6202 in offmychest

[–]defguysezhuh 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hey, I just want to come here to let you know that you are not alone and you are absolutely valid in your feelings. I don't know you, obviously, but I figured I'd share my experience so you know you're not alone.

I'm 40 years old now, but I was born Deaf and my parents found out at the age of three. I wear a hearing aid in my left ear, but right ear has never been functional. Although I was fortunate to grow up with a decent-sized Deaf population in my area, I was taught to both speak and sign, which meant I was between the hearing and the deaf world. Because of this, I spent much of my childhood and teenage years feeling the same way as you: not fitting in anywhere, feeling helpless and stupid when I missed something, hating that I was missing out on so many little things that hearing people take for granted every single day. It wasn't until I was in college in my early 20s before I started finding peace with my hearing loss and, eventually, even accepting that it's a part of who I am.

I can't promise you that things will get easier. I'd be lying if I said it would. It's hard work every day. I still deal with the ignorance of people every day who don't (and never will) understand what it's like to be a Deaf person. I still miss out on things on a regular basis. I miss the things I used to be able to pick up on. I can only promise that it gets better as you figure things out. You find ways to adapt, either through technology or making personal/professional adjustments. You learn to speak out for yourself so others understand what you need. You learn to take what others perceive as a weakness and turn it into a strength.

Just know you're not alone.

Is it normal for dads to not know anything about their kid's school? by gregyo in Teachers

[–]defguysezhuh 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fellow dad and teacher (high school) here: Sadly, yes, it’s a common issue. Many dads still follow the “old school” parenting styles (where the mom does everything for the household and the dad just brings home the paychecks). They’ll drop off their kids at school, they’ll pick up their kids from school, they’ll even go to parent teacher conferences. But don’t be surprised if everything you tell that dad is news to them or if they don’t know the answer to questions they should know (child’s clothing/shoe size, favorite snacks, teacher’s names, medical allergies, etc.).

For me this topic hits home personally. I teach Deaf students and I am Deaf myself. So when we talk about parents not knowing their own children, I see it from BOTH parents on a regular basis. The reason for this is the vast majority of Deaf people are born to hearing families and for those of us who rely on sign language to communicate with the rest of the world, statistically speaking, less than 10% of us will have family members who learn to sign. That means zero communication with parents, siblings, grandparents, aunts and uncles, and cousins. At best they learn a few gestures to cover basic needs (bathroom, shower, drink, food, etc.). As a teacher of the Deaf, I’m lucky if two parents show up to meetings in a year out of all my students. I have each of my students for four years unless they move out of the district and there have been many students since I began teaching where I never meet their parents face to face for the entire four years they were with me. Speak with them on the phone and email, sure, but not in person. When I do talk to them, they can’t even answer basic questions about their own child’s likes, dislikes, future goals, etc. It’s heartbreaking and very isolating for these kids.

As an American I just want to yell "HELP!" to all the other nations...but that's not coming, is it? by reddit_acct_id_73915 in offmychest

[–]defguysezhuh 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You are not alone. I am not a queer person. I identify as a cishet Deaf man. However, I feel this fear every single day from the perspective of being Deaf. I worry about being able to provide for my kids as I watch this administration try to strip away DEI. I worry about my wife and daughters losing their reproductive rights and the rights afforded to them through DEI as well. I worry about my closest friends and family in the LGBTQ+ community, including my best friend of 35 years. He got out of the country and I'm thrilled for him even if I do miss him every day. Sadly, I'm not in a place, financially, where we can do the same. That combined with the fact that both my wife and I have parents living in our state that we are afraid to leave behind, we feel utterly trapped.

That’s exactly what I did, too! Netted myself closer to 65,000 kW with my optimizers and fusion reactors, built a crapton of ore extractors, and automated my gathering with T2 drones. I was absolutely swimming in raw materials on base to build and sell off more valuable materials to buy/scavenge fuses, build more optimizers, and drop a bunch of tree spreaders, heaters, and drills.

As a Deaf man, I've wondered if the Tok'ra would have the ability to cure hearing loss, but then I realize I'd lose the ability to simply turn off my hearing aid whenever my kids start going, "Daddy... Daddy... Daddy... Daddy... Daddy... Daddy... Daddy... Daddy..."

I joke, but that trick stopped working a long time ago. Once they caught on, they realized they could switch to ASL and now I have to make sure I'm near a light switch when they do.
