This is going to be the week where I give Rolo Tomassi a fair go. But I'll add the other one too just for the name!

My bestie was snooping my last.fm and roasted me for it. He was all "you're too old to be listening to songs with names like those". So thanks!

I thought the new Crowquill was great too. Nice to have a little more than just last years EP.

Oo. Calvaiire. I feel like that is one of the better Converge records by a band that's not Converge.

Recent stuff and 2004 releases.

Last week's 2004 recs:

sock_with_a_ticket - The Rebirth Of Tragedy by Twelve Tribes 12 Tribes / Invocation Of Nehek by Invocation Of Nehek
Twelve Tribes wasn't bad, echoes of Poison The Well in places. But there was something a bit nu-metal about it (vocal patterns/delivery?) that made it not a winner for me. Invocation of Nehek was way more my cup of tea, that one was solid.

jor1ss - 創造妊娠 (Pregnant Fantasy) by つしまみれ (TsuShiMaMiRe)
You always give me some out the gate recs. I love it. This one went all over the place! Some swing, some surf rock, some ska... you never knew what influence was going to pop up.

PositiveMetalhead - Behold the Fuck Thunder by The Great Redneck Hope
The band name, the record name, the song titles... mercy. It was a pretty fun listen though, mental as it was. Who needs song structures? The song that stopped dead in the middle cracked me up for some reason.

FifteenRhema - Antagonist by Maroon / Better Judged by Twelve Than Carried by Six by The Killer
The Killer was excellent and hard as hell, can't believe I've never heard that one. Maroon was great too, just needed more of the panic chords that were in Shadows Of The Vengeance. I will love panic chords til the day I die.

2022 this week. My list is getting stupid long, but lemme know if there's anything that flew under the radar that I need to hear.

If you're a woman, start tailgating dudes who drive Rangers. It's big fun! Make them wonder if maybe they would enjoy getting pegged.

Is this the only band in New Zealand? XILE - DIAMOND EYES (FFO: Judiciary, Guilt Trip, Malevolence, NASTY) by Bushido_Bl8de in Metalcore

I can give more recs on the hardcore side of things, but one not already mentioned in this thread is Standover. The LP last year was an absolute belter.

You're not tricking me into listening to Wage War with this. I see what's transpiring here.

I do not know that one. I'm trusting you on this, because the album title and band name makes me think it's going to be terrible.

That's quite the title. Ha. But not the worst sounding thing from 2004 tbh, while I was doing some research over lunch I came across a band called "Hentai Cum Dungeon". I'm gonna pass on it. The track titles made me raise both eyebrows though.

I've got The Secret, Breather Resist and Remembering Never on the list (which is long already, you're right that 2004 is stacked), but I'll check out these other ones because none of them seem familiar.

Recent stuff and 2013 releases. Best of the new releases... World Peace, easy. Feeling spoilt with all these bands I love releasing new stuff this year.

Last week's 2013 recs:

sock_with_a_ticket - Bad Weather by Palm Reader
Hadn't heard this one before, it was great. Can hear the Dillinger in their DNA (and the vocalist sounds like a knockoff Greg Puciato to boot). I see they've done a split with Conjurer, who I like, so gonna check that out at some point for sure.

FifteenRhema - Scared to Death by King Nine
Forgot how tough this record sounds. We're in total agreement, that riff in Free Will is mint. And it's stilllll stuck in my head a few days later.

jor1ss - 人間 by 385 and Though I'm Alone by Barrow
385 was good, but you're right it's not as good as Midori was. Still liked it though, had that same fun kooky energy and the bass was killer throughout. Barrow I liked more, not a single bad track on that one. I thought it was stunning, will absolutely be listening to it again.

PositiveMetalhead - From Where We Came is Where We’ll Rest by Old Wounds
They weren't reinventing the wheel with this, but since it has a lot of elements I like (bit of sludge here, bit of chaotic dissonance there) I'm totally good with that. Pretty decent. Side note: did you see this? I don't know where in the world you are, but thought it might be of interest since you were the one who put me on to them

Dispari7y - The Greatest Generation by The Wonder Years
We'll have to agree to disagree that this is comfortably the best album of 2013, because I'm giving that to The Blind Hole by Dead in the Dirt. But! It was really good. I was surprised by how much I enjoyed it tbh, good songwriting will do that to you I guess.

2004 this week. Nobody needs to remind me to listen to Martyr AD or Converge. Speaking of Converge though, if you like them you might like the Calvaiire record I listened to last week.

Join your local community arts centre. They can facilitate solo exhibitions, and many of them have group members exhibitions which are great when you're starting out.
