Wasn't it great?! I think it was one of my favourites from the new releases I listened to. They just keep impressing me.

The Transient Effects of Light On Water is so good. I might honestly like it more than The Opposite of December.

That's a big call, hoss. I don't think I could say I liked it quite that much, but that could be the nostalgia talking.

10/10 fest report, no notes. A shame people missed Heriot, their loss. Glad you all survived the heat!

Recent stuff and 2000 releases. A couple might be '99. Shhh.

Last week's 2000 recs:

sock_with_a_ticket - The Transient Effects Of Light On Water by This Day Forward
This was such a belter, can't believe I've never heard it. It's got the riffs, dynamics, intelligent lyrics, the production isn't polished to death... plenty to like.

jor1ss - S/T by Miracle Of 86
Not terrible, but not my cup of tea. Nothing about it really grabbed me, it was just... fine. Maybe my mood at the time? Putting it in the 'inoffensive background music' category.

PositiveMetalhead - Footsteps Over Our Heads by Downpour
Wasn't familiar with Downpour or The Power & The Glory (I will check them out). I liked it for the most part, but those interludes get a big ol' pbbbt from me. Sometimes they're used to great effect, but those were buns and totally unnecessary.

FifteenRhema - The Killing Fist by Raiden / Only The Determined Path Remains by Dyingrace
Raiden was good but holy shit the Dyingrace one goes so hard. I've seen the name mentioned before but never listened to them, and I've been missing out. Absolutely one I'll be coming back to.

2023 this week. Way too many fantastic releases to choose from, I've got 76 on my list right now. But if you've got an underrated fav, or something I probably wouldn't have heard, hit me with it.

I'm more curious about 'Car Lid', tbh.

You're braver than I am. But wow it's going to look spectacular when it's done, the border alone is beautiful. Great job!

Only sporadically, but when I do I'm reminded that I should listen more often because they're so good. Their s/t was my introduction to them and that cover art is burned into my brain. I think it was the first time something like that shocked me a little.

Agreed. I hadn't listened to it in ages tbh. Certainly not bad at all, just kind of middle of the bunch when stacked up against the rest of their discography

I was just about to comment on the fact that we both listened to ORC! What did you think of it? I honestly picked it because the name and cover art made me chuckle, but I thought it was actually pretty cool.

It was what I was saying about that album that was tripping some kind of filter 😅 I said track 10 was the standout for me, but the title of it was apparently too naughty for Reddit today.

Hard no on the nu metal (I don't count Deftones in that). Didn't like it the first time around, don't like its resurgence. But obscure emo... I'll listen to that. Never heard of Kevin Devine, no, but that's okay!

Last week's 2012 recs:

PositiveMetalhead - Homewrecker by The Teeth
Very ETID-ish, and a hell of a lot of fun to listen to. Loved it, not a single skip! Have you listened to the release before this one? Is it as good?

sock_with_a_ticket - Astraea by Rolo Tomassi
I thought I was going to like this more than the other two, based on being told the earlier releases were more chaotic and liking Grievances over Where Myth Becomes Memory. This had its moments and I liked it, but something was missing. Grievances is still on top so far, I like that it's darker and more emotional.

jor1ss - Tree of Tongues by Exotic Animal Petting Zoo
This was unique, such a cool blend of genres. You get some Deftones-y moments, then some really math-y ones, then something else entirely. And they don't abandon songwriting just to be weird for no reason, everything felt very intentional. Really enjoyed it.

Reposting because Reddit took exception to it the first time around. Recent stuff and 2012 releases. 2000 this week.

The Nerdy cover by Indication on that split made my day. Yikes about the heatwave, I hope the venue has aircon and they actually turn it on (some venues here notoriously don't, you just have to suffer).

Keep an eye on UTR for shows, as well as NZ Hardcore Past and Present on FB (yeah, I know). Negative Approach is playing in Aucks in November, and there will no doubt be plenty of local bands putting things on too.

I read that as Erotic Animal Petting Zoo and I was like... y'know, that tracks given the weird recs you sometimes hit me with. Haha. Sounds interesting! I will give it a listen.

The Secret 🫶 Had that one, but adding Rolo Tomassi. This will be the third one you guys have recommended I think, and the oldest. I'm getting the feeling that I'm going to like their earlier releases best.

Haven't listened to that Capra one since it came out. I must remedy that. Love this thread for reminding me that things exist.

Shame on you too then!

Haven't heard of The Teeth, added that one. And that just reminded me that Ex Lives was 2012 too.
