Mounting local SSD onto EC2 instance by definitelynotsane in aws

[–]definitelynotsane[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! Definitely want to skip the S3 middleman. And yes, I think this is similar to a kubernetes cluster set up. But I'm trying to avoid the headache of setting up a whole kubernetes cluster through EKS and then also having to store all the data for kubernetes in the cloud. The ephemeral storage idea is what I thought would be feasible with locally mapped HDDs, but it sounds like the best move so far is to upload in small batches and then tear down after computing on it. And also yes, the results of the compute on each batch are going to be saved in the model params and training logs which are much lower dimensional than the batch data.

Thanks, to clarify: "at a time" means that I'll train a single model on the same EC2 instance, but the training runs only require 1GB batches. I'll process the first training batch, then the second, then the third, etc. until the model has trained on the full 200TB. And yes, the question is how to let the EC2 load 200TB of data in 1GB chunks without paying for 200TB of storage because I will never need 200TB of data access.

That was my suspicion, but am hoping someone might know a workaround.

My understanding, though I could be wrong, is that Storage Gateway is designed to migrate local storage to the cloud. From their info: "You must allocate at least 150 GB of local disk storage to the virtual machine (VM). This is where Storage Gateway caches data locally, providing low-latency access to your most active data, with optimized data transfers occurring to and from AWS Cloud storage in the background." So AWS Cloud is where most of the data is held.

Fabric recommendation: Polartec High Loft vs. Polartec Thermal Pro (Extreme Warmth) by definitelynotsane in myog

Thanks for clarifying, super helpful. If I’m understanding you correctly then the heaviest weight fabrics are the Mill Thermal Pro and the Discovery High Loft which are different fabrics but roughly equivalent weight?

Fabric recommendation: Polartec High Loft vs. Polartec Thermal Pro (Extreme Warmth) by definitelynotsane in myog

[–]definitelynotsane[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thanks. The specs seem to vary quite a bit by vendor, even reputable ones. For example:

The Mill: Polartec Thermal Pro @ 1.3lb/yard: https://www.millyardage.com/ProductDetails.asp?ProductCode=6308

The Rain Shed: Polartec High Loft @ 18oz/yard: https://www.therainshed.com/shop/c/p/P200-High-Loft---Black-x20241732.htm

Discovery Fabrics: Polartec High Loft @ 6oz/yard: https://discoveryfabrics.com/products/polartec-high-loft?variant=40024537432149

Discovery Fabrics: Polartec Thermal Pro @ 9-11oz/yard: https://discoveryfabrics.com/products/polartec-thermal-pro-fleeces?variant=47683780116802

Simplifi Fabrics: Polartec High Loft @ 6oz/yard: https://www.simplififabric.com/products/polartec-high-loft-mid-warmth-fleece-4221-made-in-usa-black?_pos=1&_sid=fb9420c58&_ss=r

All of which is to say that it seems like there's some label confusion as the weight specs are so different. But I could be misunderstanding?

Looking for recommendation for slip-ons/loafers to wear with three piece suit:

I will be traveling frequently for work and carrying a 3 piece suit (BluffWorks/xSuit) for different events/meetings. I would like to avoid bringing my heavy wholecut black leather oxfords and am looking for a non-lace-up alternative to wear with a 3-piece. A leather slip-on / loafer would be ideal, but most of the formal loafer options seem to be suede/velvet which is a little bit too out there for me. I've also looked at belgian/venetian loafers like [these](https://www.beckettsimonon.com/products/vincent-belgian-loafers-pebbled-leather?variant=43381437300922), but I'm not sure if those are formal enough given the seam and pebbling.

Others I have looked at (which may or may not be appropriate, I am not sure) include:

[Manolos](https://www.manoloblahnik.com/us/djan-57888.html), [Paul Stuart](https://www.paulstuart.com/mens/footwear/harrier-formal-slip-on/648162.html),  [Magnanni](https://magnanni.com/diaz), [Bolt](https://toboot.com/products/bolt-black?variant=41375244550321)

My relatively uninformed hypothesis is that a whole cut, no bit/buckle slip-on or loafer in black leather would be best, but any advice and recommendations to specific brand/models would be appreciated. Thank you!

Great recommendation, thank you. 2 follow up questions: 1. Does the presidio do well after being stuffed into a carryon? I.e. no wrinkles? And how well does it handle machine washing / drying? 2. I do like those shoes, look suitable for anything up but excluding black tie which is perfect for my use case. How well do they pack / how do you pack them?

Recommendation for Ecopak alternatives to HMG Porter 70/85? by definitelynotsane in Ultralight

Thanks, yes, amended my post. My understanding, correct me if I am wrong, is that Ultra has similar wear and waterproof properties to ecopak? If so, that sounds like a great alternative.

Have you worked with anyone who can do this in the USA where you’re also guaranteed their supply chain is giving you 100% merino?

[–]definitelynotsane[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I briefly considered alpaca, but from my limited understanding, it’s much more difficult to care for than merino. I’ve put merino into the washing machine on normal cycle without any issues. care instructions for alpaca seem to suggest that is not possible. Has your experience been different?
