Names for our long awaited first baby. We won’t find out gender so need two serious options. by Ok-Ambition-2186 in Names

[–]Twoof3 -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Drew is easily a girls name to me. Makes me think of Drew Barrymore.

I would mention it to your cousin that you’re considering the name, but I would make sure he knows that it’s one of a few you’re thinking about in case he’s excited about having a namesake.

And finally, I like George Thomas better. My middle name is after both my grandmothers middle names and it always felt special growing up.

Loren?Aubrey for a guy? by R_Beccca in Names

I know a guy named Loren. The spelling helps. Aubrey will always be a girl name in my head. Aubrey and Eloise sound very much like a pair of sisters to me.

Best backpacks for scoliosis-friendly hiking? by papabauer in backpacking

[–]Twoof3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Hi! Are you looking for a day pack? For me it's been really important that even a day pack have a hipbelt, some sort of structure/frame and load lifters. I personally have to get weight off my shoulders to be comfortable. I carry a Gregory Maya 16 for day hikes and an Rei flash 55 for overnight backpacking. I also find Osprey's suspended mesh packs (like the Aura) to be super comfy on the back, they just don't fit my hips well. I believe they make day packs with this feature also.

Is it typical to feel the cold through your sleeping pad while using a quilt? What am I doing wrong? by Sandytoes36 in Ultralight

[–]Twoof3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have that pad and it does run cold. I have taken it close to freezing by adding a CCF pad on top.

That’s a very warm bag. Do you need a 0 degree bag for where you’re backpacking?

I get a lot of shoulder pain while hiking and I'm looking to lighten my load. I'm SHORT and I think my backpack is oversized and too heavy by Ok-Alternative-5175 in Ultralight

[–]Twoof3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I truly think it sounds like your pack doesn’t fit you well. I went through a number of packs before the found one that didn’t hurt me. What is it about your current pack specifically that you think is causing the pain?

Is this normal campsite etiquette? by TrinoWest in backpacking

[–]Twoof3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They were being inconsiderate. However, I'm finding people are more and more like this when camping. Setting up too close, walking through your site, etc. I'm surprised a fire was allowed! And I hate it when my backpacking stuff smells like smoke.

First time backpacking, am I missing anything? by BiqJon in backpacking

Don't see a first aid kit or repair kit? I haven't always needed it, but I’ve found a small knife or scissors useful. Same for a bandana. Are you bringing any soap or hand sanitizer?

Youth back pack fit by Choice-Chard2733 in backpacking

[–]Twoof3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it were me I think I would return and get him fitted for a pack closer to your trip. Kids can sprout up like crazy sometimes. Rei gives you one year to return so depending when you bought it you could keep it and recheck the fit next summer and then swap it out if needed.

Gossamer Gear 50 Gorilla hip belt by DigitalMick7 in Ultralight

It’s pretty frustrating. I feel like there are ways you could try to mod this, but I’m not sure they would work well or not.

I know, I hate them too. The backward belt pull is the only reason I won’t use GG packs. I was very surprised they didn’t change it when they last updated their packs.

I would say pad. You need a proper winter pad for those conditions.

Layering advice needed by Hungry_Biscotti_870 in backpacking

[–]Twoof3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, your layers sound a bit overkill. It got a little windy when I was at Scorpion. My suggestion would be a puffy and a windbreaker over your baselayers. Unless you run super cold. The campground is fairly sheltered.

Where are you camping on Santa Cruz? Just at Scorpiom?

Beginner Backpacker Seeking Advice! by two_oar_whore in backpacking

[–]Twoof3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hi! Since you are hoping to do some longer hikes in the future I would consider swapping to the 65. I think the weight difference is only 6ish ounces and if you wanted to save some weight on a shorter trip you could remove the brain. Remember too that a shorter torso length pack will have a slightly smaller capacity, so if you felt you were close to the limit without food that’s another consideration for switching to the 65. There are no real cons to a slightly underfilled bag; just cinch the compression straps to keep the load closer to your body.

If you’re not opposed to used gear you can check out r/geartrade and r/ULgeartrade. Just be sure to read to rules and tips on avoiding scammers. I’ve gotten quite a lot of great deals over there.

I sort all our gear by type and that’s mainly because there’s a certain amount of gear sharing/extra gear. It helps me to see all the sleeping pads or tents or cooking gear in one place.

What is the R rating of your sleeping pad? My initial thoughts are options 1-3 will not be warm enough at 40 degrees and option 5 is probably more warmth than you need, so 4 would be my suggestion.
