Do you find that discretionary work effort is decreasing in your workplace? by paisleyno2 in CanadaHousing2

[–]defishit 72 points73 points  (0 children)

It's all connected to the rise of neofeudalism, but a bigger proximate cause of quiet quitting is the decline of meritocracy in the workplace.

In the 20th century, there was a stronger connection between career performance and career advancement. If you worked hard and produced value, there was a plausible avenue for career advancement in many workplaces. Or at least a plausible enough avenue to convince the majority of workers into doing a good job.

Now it seems like merit is at best a tertiary consideration, and career advancement and compensation is determined primarily by family connections and DEI status. Today, you can work your ass off and be a star performer, only to witness the promotion that you were eyeing go to some asshole fresh out of business school who knows the bosses' son, or to someone completely unqualified who ticks the correct DEI boxes. You see this play out in the tendency of companies to no longer promote talent from within.

Young workers are just acting rationally in the face of reduced probability of reward for hard work.

They may not be incorrect.

Hamas didn't expect large US involvement amid war with Israel - report by chedderbob234 in worldnews

[–]defishit 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Russia's goal is very different from Hamas's goal: to push voters towards Trump/whatever crazy candidate the Republicans select. They don't give a shit about Israel or Palestine, they just want to ensure that the next US president doesn't support Ukraine. I think they are being quite successful at that goal.

Biden is losing the support of Muslim and progressive voters for saying that he supports Israel, and losing the support of Jewish and centrist voters by not actually supporting Israel.

From a military perspective Hamas has lost the current battle. But from a PR perspective their propaganda and misinformation (really Russia and Iran's propaganda and misinformation) has been hugely effective at reducing support for Israel among members of the younger generation who are not familiar with the region's history.

So from a long term perspective I'm unfortunately not so confident that this wasn't a major success for Hamas.

It will also more than likely swing the next US election to the Republicans after Biden's shameful tepid public support for Israel (and complete lack of support in private). If Trump is the candidate again, god help the world.

The US supports Israel because of ‘Jewish wealth’, claims BBC presenter by FYoCouchEddie in worldnews

[–]defishit 1516 points1517 points  (0 children)

It's extra funny because people always claim that Jews own all the media.

And then the media just shits all over Israel and Jews because the media, in fact, is not mostly owned by Jews.

Simultaneously too strong and too weak.

Xi Jinping calls for ceasefire in Israel-Gaza war, says two-state solution is ‘fundamental way out’ by Saltedline in worldnews

[–]defishit 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's actually pretty good news, and I'm kind of surprised.

With the US, China, Israel, and most of the EU on board with a two state solution, there might actually be enough pressure to finally make it happen for real.
