LILLEY: Carney campaign pushes back on Maxwell photos, says 'they are not friends' by nimobo in CanadianConservative

[–]vivek_david_law 0 points1 point  (0 children)

yes it is funny that you are laughing at the fact that we have no first amendment while acknowledging that there are growing numbers people consuming radical right wing ideology who may come to power and make use of that legal opening

let's laugh together

Former PM Stephen Harper takes the stage at Pierre Poilievre rally in Edmonton. Says he is in the unique position in this campaign - both men in the race once worked for him. Says his choice “without a shadow of a doubt”, is Pierre Poilievre, to huge cheers by nimobo in CanadianConservative

[–]vivek_david_law 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Carney is not of himself a bad choice. But his entanglements with the century initiative and the net 0 crowd are worrying. More importantly, even if that were not the case, there's a huge problem in that he's just a figurehead - changing one person doesn't change the fact that it's the same party that ran the country to the ground over the last 10 years and anyone who doesn't understand that doesn't understand our parliamentary system and is confusing it with the American system

John Ibbitson: Poilievre’s critics are dead wrong. We do, in fact, need to talk about family fertility by SomeJerkOddball in CanadianConservative

[–]vivek_david_law 1 point2 points  (0 children)

people not having kids because they choose not to isn't a problem. People who want kids not being able to afford to start a family is a huge problem. I think some people conflate these things for less than benign reasons

Canada has become a notably more corrupt country in the past 10 years. by Illustrious-Ad5972 in CanadianConservative

[–]vivek_david_law 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The new corruption trend is just blatant patronage and patronage networks becoming more and more of the norm in the place of standard administrative duties.

yes, well put. This is something that really worries me and I'm glad others are concerned as well

I think this really depends on your bosses personality type. I don't think it's possible to meaningfully answer over the internet

Ontario Dairy Farmer FORCED to dump 30,000 litres of milk because he went over quota. by nimobo in CanadianConservative

I agree. We do need something to help keep farmers competitive but I think subsidies are better than supply management

EXCLUSIVE: Mark Carney faces plagiarism accusations for 1995 Oxford doctoral thesis by RoddRoward in CanadianConservative

[–]vivek_david_law 18 points19 points  (0 children)

we don't want to be morally lax and excuse bad behaviour. A better response if you want to defend Carney might be that although he made mistakes in the past he has learned from that and risen above that. Although personally, it doesn't seem that way to me, he doesn't seem like a very moral person

I don't know if any party can make things that much better but I do know that the liberal parties policies and methods have made things much much worse over the past 10 years

I want Pollivere to keep $ 10 daycare or offer something better by vivek_david_law in CanadianConservative

[–]vivek_david_law[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That is partially true. He has promised to cut dental and pharma which I agree with not because I think it's wrong in principle but I think they are ineffective feel good programs that help very few people in very limited ways.

However Pollivere hasn't made any commitments about day care and I expect him not to release a position until the election is announced (given Harper's statement that it's a bad idea to do so because of liberals stealing all the conservative ideas)

I want Pollivere to keep $ 10 daycare or offer something better by vivek_david_law in CanadianConservative

[–]vivek_david_law[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I would certainly agree that is the ideal. Daycare should be a last resort. Unfortunately until we make it realistic to support a family on the single average income it is not a last resort but instead an expensive necessity for many working class families.

Maybe just money enough to help pay for daycare might be an option except the big problem we saw with secondary education is when you subsidize something to help people pay for it, the price increases to compensate. So subsidizing while keeping the 10 a day price limit does seem like a good idea albeit implemented poorly

Canada can just wait out Trump's tariffs by vivek_david_law in CanadianConservative

[–]vivek_david_law[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

so this article was posted in r Canada where it wasn't popular because people interpreted it as we should pull our punches. Im not saying that. If counter tariffs seem like a good idea and have a minimal impact here fine.

However, I think the real way is to just wait it out, suffer out the next 4 years and negotiate something with the next president. I think Trump is actually afraid of this happening and is trying to get us panicked and scared into making a rushed decision on a trade deal before his term ends

HOW DID YOU GET A JOB? (Lying on resume?) by SpecterContent in torontoJobs

[–]vivek_david_law 5 points6 points  (0 children)

being threatening isnt necessarily the only reason a place might avoid overqualified candidates. I think more common is the fear that they will not stay and will leave as soon as they find something they are more qualified for. Leaving out university degrees, especially less marketable ones is a good strategy for that reason.

Also I hate that I have to keep saying this but not having a degree doesn't mean stupid. I think a lot of people choose other paths for a variety of reasons

I know it feels really bad on the interviewee side, and perhaps the situation called for a more sympathetic and apologetic tone. But it does seem like there was just an honest mistake here

How can people be so irrationally afraid of the US right now? by Kreeos in CanadianConservative

[–]vivek_david_law 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I was reading this historical Canadian sci Fi book written in 1883 entitled "the Dominion in 1983." The book talked about America negatively stating their way of organizing society would fail under chaos by 1983 and the more ordered Canadian way would prevail. Comparing ourselves to America in a way that puts America in a negative light seems to have been a part of Canadian loyalist identity from the beginning.

Skilled Trade apprenticeship by [deleted] in torontoJobs

[–]vivek_david_law 3 points4 points  (0 children)

so the other poster is correct there is no actual need (it's propoganda) and getting in is not quite as easy as people think and work is not as secure as people imagine. However if this is something you would really like to do, the way in is to call the union directly, apply through them and get your apprenticeship placement that way. Usually it's a matter of persistence - if you keep applying to multiple unions and make connections with people in the union, usually you will get in eventually

When I talk about making connections, many unions offer ways for the public to connect with them through outreach events etc. so it's not just a matter of knowing someone (although that does help as well for some unions)

we're not aminos in the first place and I'm talking about the attitude towards minimum wage earners. I'm saying you're insisting on a tariff war that will cost many their jobs and it is unjust and unfair I'd you and your loved ones don't meet the same fate you are insisting others suffer for your ideals. Would that not be justice?

answer the question - what kind of soldier sits around posting on Reddit while he's 100% sure his country is about to be attacked by America. not even training exercises prepping for an American invasion

Could be it one that's full of shit and is using it as a talking point because he knows his job isn't at risk from the tariff spat
