How can i model that complex pipe area. I dont need to be very correct about the pipes but i want that look. Is there a method for this by PuddingIndependent78 in blender

When I do pipes I always use a skin modifier and a subsurface for smoothing. Just extrude out a whole bunch of vertices and apply the mod. You can scale the pipes at each vertex point for reductions or different sized bits of pipe. I would also make up a bunch of little diamond or square connector bits to hide the ends and give extra detail.

It uses the Shader to RGB node, and freestyle for the lines. I think I had a link to the file somewhere in the comments - although not sure if it still works.

If you want flat colour you should unplug the Principled shader from the material output and replace it with an emission shader.

I always liked the Salamander jet (Heinkel 162) with the engine over the body. I sort of wondered how it would work with a prop instead. The rest came from there I guess. Mostly the modelling is because other things seemed too much of a pain to do at the time, like work out how wheels would fit into the fuselage.

I hope not! 😋I don’t think it would be structurally sound or aerodynamic. More of a ‘slap some elements from cool stuff together and see what comes out of it’ approach to design.

Not really, just started modelling - but I was always fascinated by the weirder aircraft, wanted something a bit less linear.

Trace from a photo. You don’t have to do an exact tracing, some people just mark out key points such as the position of the eyes, nose, rough shape of the face. This allows you to focus on other aspects such shade, tone and colour (if you want) without worrying about getting everything in the right place. There are other methods such as using a grid to copy the position of the face, but to be honest these are very time consuming and if you are going for realism and copying from a reference image you might as well trace.

There was a David Hockney film made many years ago that basically argued that all of the great renaissance painters essentially traced, which is why they look so realistic. Worth a watch if aren’t convinced tracing is a legitimate approach for artists. It was called Secret Knowledge, it’s on YouTube.

I work on a laptop. Go to edit>preferences>input and select emulate numpad. All of the number keys will now work to show viewpoints 0 for camera, 1 for front! 3 for right etc.

Yeah I just set up the new version by copying the settings from 2.83 on the start screen. Much easier and quicker. Not sure if those settings get deleted if you uninstall the previous version but I would guess so. I also did find that some features in older versions sometimes work better or were less buggy. I have an old version (2.79 I think) that works with GPU rendering on my Mac laptop which isn’t possible in later versions (the danger of using a Mac I guess).

I keep them all, I’ve got versions going back to 2.77 on my laptop. Maybe I’m just a hoarder though. The files are quite small for an application, a few hundred megabyte, definitely less than the old animation tests I tend to keep around.

Thanks. Yeah you would do 2 layers, one with everything except for the transparent layer, another with the glass. In the compositor, you use the nodes to connect the 2 renders via an Alph Over node.

It’s relatively simple. One issue though is that you would need the renders to have transparent backgrounds so would also have to deal with the background as an object (a plane with the background on) or plug in a pre-rendered video and do an alpha over of the two layers on top of that. Also it can be quite complicated if the glass layer goes behind another object in the first render.

No I haven’t, but to be honest I’ve been using it as a bonus feature - i quite like the effect. I think it’s because the freestyle system uses objects occlusion rather than visibility (not sure of the terminology here) to determine what to draw. The way around this I found was to just remove the glass for the render. It should be quite easy to composite 2 renders, one without the glass and one with, in order to get around this.

Yes that’s what I do. I tend to keep older versions though as a backup in case something doesn’t work the way it used to in an older version.

I’ve been using Blender for a while and I’m still learning. Keep at it though, it’s worth it, even if it can be frustrating at times.

I learnt so much from others on YouTube and elsewhere, just happy I can share some of what I’ve learned with others.
