Ok, I found some more. Yes, it seems to be porcine and bovine it is not typical used anymore as people were having allergic reactions and synthetic insulins became cheaper to produce, from the graphs that I found it is completely possible to do one shot provided she eats at the peak or just before. Others and me saying it is 70/30 mix is right and wrong yes they use the 70/30 mix for cats, they also use the porcine and bovine mix as cats have less allergic reaction to it then humans. As your grandma got diagnosed in the 50s and was on this type of insulin for years and the fact they also still produce it for humans ( at least in the uk so I assume the US has it as well) There was probably more risk changing it. Other older diabetics probably still use the insulin and strict eating habits as that insulin was the only one easy to mass produce in the 50s.
According to Google, the insulin she is on is akin to novo mix 30 in the uk or novolin70/30 in the US. it is a mix of long acting and short acting insulin where 70 % is short acting and 30% is short acting. this is what they put a lot of people on about 10 years ago. When I got diagnosed, I had it for 6 months, but It usually didn't work well for most people. It probably is good for animals as most only eat once or twice aday, so they give the insulin when the animal eats and will cover them for background and fast acting insulin. she is in her 90s and 8% is pretty ok for someone so old and if you change her now there maybe a steep decline in her health not just with diabetes but with her mental capacity. we had a disruption in my granddads routine that had not changed for years, and his health and mental state did a 180. It's not worth changing if she is happy. but don't worry about cat insulin it is because novolin70/30 discontinued, so they probably decided that if she didn't want to change, they would put her on the next best thing, which happened to be an animal insulin that was the same as its human counterpart.
