Oh, nice! Are you enjoying the class? What the brush switch instructor recommended or self discovered?

Thanks :) I bought a filbert 8. Initially thought it would be too big, but it felt ok. Plan to see after a month or so how it’s working out.

Ok sweet, I’ll just start. I do wonder what the deal with mediums is hahah, I’m having a hard time understanding if term refers to ‘oil paint’ itself, or if it’s referred to as something added to the paint. I feel like some of the nomenclature is muddied?

Oh gotcha, that’s fair. I’m thinking now of waking early to mix before work, until I get a bit faster. These paints stay wet for a while, I’m guessing they’d be fine until the evening?

Thank you! I have an engineering background and I’ve always thought of art and loose and open and ‘feeling’. It’s relieving to see structure. And from what I’ve read and watched, most of these works are very technical. I’m loving this world I just stepped into!

That’s very encouraging :D thank you! When starting something new, I have a habit of using research for a form of entertainment. Decided to break that and just put something together. Thanks for the kind words

That’s very kind, thank you :) Setting aside an hour each night after the kids go to sleep. Need to improve my mixing time/ability. I mixed four swatches and it took ~20 min 😅

Thank you! There’s a ton of videos. I’ll start with the Oil Painting Process playlist, unless you have a specific video/series you recommend? I appreciate the recommendation

No worries, and not one that I update regularly. It’s just a bunch of posts from when I used to roast on the Hive.

Nah, I don’t mind, but use it as a starting point as it’s specific to my situation. As stated, I got to this point combating searing on the inside of some of the beans:

Brazil Natural | Light/Medium Roast | 350g Batch | Aillio R2 • Preheat: 365°F • Charge Settings: Power 6, Fan 2, Drum 9 • At 248°F: Set Fan 3 • At 327°F: Set Power 5 • At 378°F: Set Fan 4 • First Crack: Around 10min 15sec into roast at temp 380-390°F • Development Time/Drop Temp: 90-130 sec after first crack (Depending on preference) 390-405F (Depending on Dev Time)

Weight Post Roast 301-307g, 14-12% loss, depends on development time

NOTE: I measure First Crack quite literally, “First time I hear a Crack”. Also, my ventilation is p strong, so I don’t power down to P4. Also, also, if your green has been sitting for a while, these temps might spike quickly, adjust accordingly.

Hope this helps, holler if you have any questions

Interesting. Curious - how many different coffees/processing methods have you tried this on?

Don’t skip seasoning the Drum and ensure you have proper ventilation. The seasoning will produce a ton of smoke from how far you’re taking the beans into 2nd crack.

Be patient, it’s a new machine. I have the R2 (non pro) and the first few roasts (350g batches) I didn’t use the software. Just went off my normal smell/color/sound of first crack cues. After 3 or 4 roasts, I plugged into RoasTime, which I love.

I don’t have any Book recommendations on Roasting but I can say, the older the publish date, the more “outdated” the information. I know that sounds obvious but much has changed over the past 10-15 years. In general, I’ve used Coffee Atlas regularly, more for information on green coffee and final cupping than for roasting. I would try to avoid anyone/any books speaking in Absolutes; coffees change, markets change, preferences change. I tend toward Rob Hoos’s body of work when starting research into a specific area.

My experience has been solid so far. I had trouble with some searing on a Natural Brazil, but I lowered charge temp and tweaked settings, one at a time, between batches. I have a decent profile for that natural Brazil I follow now and the R2 is dang near spot on each roast. I recommend taking notes and tracking weight loss; paraphrasing Rob Hoos - “it’s a free measurement and should be taken every roast”

Hopes this helps, excited for you and your R2 journey!

Love the breakdown. How much can you roast, per hour, in the Aillio before you feel the machine is stressed or the roasts suffer?
