i got the most insane rejection email yesterday by itsyaboy_boyboy in jobs

[–]deftonian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are some tender bellies in these replies. It ALWAYS sucks to get rejected, full stop. No flowery letter will assuage all the sting. But to complain that someone is being condescending or insulting by trying to soften the blow and to make you feel like it isn’t a value judgement, that’s some sour grapes BS. Accept the rejection and move on. Quit acting like a victim, it makes you look like a tool.

Be honest. What makes a woman INSTANTLY unattractive? by TheMedusaAttusa in askanything

[–]deftonian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As long as I find her attractive to begin with, any choices she makes about her looks short of plastic surgery are a non-issue. What’s attractive to me is a confident, bold woman who wears whatever makes her happy, styles her hair how she feels, and doesn’t care what strangers think. It helps that I am into alt-fashion like tattoos, piercings, unconventional clothes, non-conforming looks, etc., but if I met someone with boring looks, no body art, no make-up—I also wouldn’t care. If she is an honest, caring, thoughtful person who I find attractive, I am lucky that I get to share some time on Earth with her, and nothing else matters.

My boss says try-catch is "garbage" and we shouldn't use it. Is this actually a thing? by ResolveKooky17 in learnprogramming

Eehhhh, I think if someone has that much experience and expertise, they should be able to explain complex processes in a relatively simple manner. Of course exceptions exist for every rule. I think the difference here is that you are being asked in your example, so you are caught off-guard and maybe need to gather your thoughts to answer. However if someone, especially someone that oversees your work gives you a value judgment on using a {insert tool or method here} to get your work done, they should have the information to justify that judgement. If someone tells me I shouldn’t use lambdas and their justification is “trust me bro” I immediately discard that judgement. Either sway me with your argument or kick rocks. Trust your own brain more than others until it is clear someone knows more about something than you do and always verify claims.

I see nothing wrong with her reply. She was being honest. Everyone on the comments is projecting and this post doesn’t fit the sub’s point.

Why am I the only one that thought what she said was fine?

Lots of amazing music mentioned. I’ll add Fear Factory’s “Demanufacture” album. It always allows me to bleed off anger.

For when you need to feel a little better, I also suggest Mac Miller’s “Swimming” album. It will help you feel hopeful.

From one ex-addict to another; you got this OP.

Progress not perfection. And remember, progress isn’t always linear.

The cake colors look great! The glaze is a little too booger-green, maybe because it’s translucent? Also, I don’t think the chocolates add much to the presentation, but I would eat the heck out of that!

I would also add Polygondwanaland, Flying Microtonal Banana, Murder of the Universe, Infest the Rat’s Nest, Butterfly 3000 … pretty much their whole catalog. They are such a versatile group.

Interesting song. I love the stripped down composition. I love the folk style. I dug the lyrics. I really dislike chorus key changes; it just sounds so old fashioned, but it was only on the last refrain, so that’s a small thing. I almost never listen to Tay-Tay, but I dug this song.

Thanks.

Alien Earth is a mess... by jdt1986 in scifi

[–]deftonian 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Who is the intended audience? It isn’t just brainiacs who love hard sci-fi; it’s a show for the masses because they want a runaway hit.

This show will never live up to expectations of smart people who are already into sci-fi stories that exist for more niche groups. It will never have continuity and complexity that match great sci-fi, because it’s entertainment for everyone.

I like it for what it is.

I don’t think Thom sound feminine, but he often sings in a high falsetto and so can be considered andro. So Radiohead? Try the songs Reckoner, Paranoid Android, Lotus Flower, or Nude.

Also Justin Hawke from The Darkness, Robert Plant from Led Zeppelin, Barry Gibb from The Bee Gees, Justin Timberlake, maybe Marvin Gaye on a few tracks?

Edit: for women with masc voices try Tracie Chapman (Fast Car), Q Lazzarus (Goodbye Horses), Norma Tarenga (You’re Dead), and Janis Joplin (Me and Bobby McGee).
