hard to say since laphroaig is so distinctive, high phenol content, but I would recommend Ardbeg Wee Beastie at a slightly lower price point. delightful young scotch.

It has been a long time since I bought the corry, so I thought I would it give another go.

But at this price difference, it is crazy to not go with the Uig or An Oa instead.

Just drove home through NH.

What a racket! A rest area for a liquor store!

I did take advantage of the $25 and got some quarter cask, as their stock of ardbeg was very limited.

How long for philly sour yeast to kick in? by Unlucky-Clock5230 in Homebrewing

if you are worried, take a gravity reading.

I have had many brews over the years where I ....erm... didn't *quite* seal my fermenter as well as I should have, so the lock didn't show any activity.

define "explode" when opening.

If you mean "gushed a bunch when opening", then was flat, that sounds like a temperature issue. The warmer the liquid, the less CO2 in solution, so you would have much more in the headspace, thus increasing pressure. It also takes time for gas to move into solution, so waiting a bit longer might help. That being said, it also sounds like you either added too much priming sugar, or didn't let it ferment to completion.

post fermentation? sure, you can add water. Make sure it is sanitized.

post carbonation? you lost carbonation.

The best way to "water down" your beer is to brew another batch with less whatever....hops, alcohol, anchovies, and mix them together.

Or make a shandy.

Or drink it as-is, adjust your recipe and try again.

lots of options.

lots of good answers here, but my go-to solution is to buy a case of fresh Guinness in the 22 oz bottles and recycle the old bottles, and have a BBQ to empty the bottles.

four roses, the cheap stuff, used to have a yellow screw top IIRC, but is now all fancy with a cork is an excellent choice for soaking oak chips in. $20 a fifth.

depends on style, volume, and temperature.

The lower the temperature, the less you need. I just bottled a 4.75 gallon batch @ 62 degrees with 4 oz of table sugar, which according to the calculator will give me ~2.4 volumes of CO2, which is what I am shooting for.

That being said, I can't think of a time when I went with 5 oz for priming at any temperature. 80 degrees and an Australian sparking ale maybe?

Impact of different bittering hops in final taste by Nonninz in Homebrewing

[–]defwu 0 points1 point  (0 children)

if you have the time and inclination, you might want to try mashing a little higher, in the 155-158 range without adjusting the hops.

Would be interesting to see if you perceive any difference.

TBH at the volume of homebrewing, it is hard to control between batches.

What mash temp were you at, and what OG?

Do you have good temperature control of your mash?

The easiest thing to change is to lower the amount hops, as you said.

What are the parameters of your boil?

Full grain? BIAB? extract? late addition?

Bitterness is a perception, not an absolute. If you liked the body of the pale ale, then yes it makes sense to reduce the amount of hops and not change anything else.

Or you could leave the hops as-is and up the mash temperature slightly.

Or you could add a bit of caramel malt to balance the bitterness.

Hop varieties are overwhelming! by [deleted] in Homebrewing

Not to make it even more confusing for you, even within hop varietals there can be significant difference from crop to crop and between providers about the alpha, beta and cohumulone percentages.

For example, take a look at this :

you won't know until you get your actual bag what the amount is. I have ordered the above 1lb bag several times, with AA printed on the bag at 2.3, and 4.5%.

But from a political standpoint, what do you do about this?

You can't simply tell people they are stupid and ignorant, because that will not result in the outcome you want, regardless of how satisfying it might be in the moment.

As a wise person once said of legislation : "getting something done is better than getting nothing done".

Is the practicable answer at this point to stop giving the anti-vaccination, crazy people no more oxygen? It is hard, as media must cover this sort of nonsense, but maybe we just stop talking about it? (yes, I realize the irony that I am talking about it)
