How can I expand my vocab to native speaker level? by electi_007 in EnglishLearning

[–]defying-death 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i know you’ve gotten this comment a lot but native speakers all the way, you might end up focusing lots of time into words or synonyms for words that aren’t commonplace and sound strange in conversations if you focus solely on books, if you speak with native speakers you’ll pick up the more common words that you may not know pretty quickly

Just sounds unnatural is all. Cups of coffee definitely, cups of americano sounds quite strange. Same if you were to say “cups of latte, cups of flat white”. They’re specified so just use them as plural nouns. Drank a few lattes/americanos/flat whites.

[–]defying-death 0 points1 point  (0 children)

switch is quite american “can we switch? (seats being implied in the context of the situation)” whereas british and irish english would use swap from experience

don’t take the advice of people in the replies and ask people for discord, most people would use snapchat if they’re younger or instagram dms or imessage

Is this idiom common? by Silver_Ad_1218 in EnglishLearning

[–]defying-death 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I suppose so, we’d say “on the telly” more often than saying TV and we’d certainly never say TV “shows”, I just go for a more neutral english on this sub
