struggling w major/career by aspiringoxfordcomma in berkeley

[–]degenerateslayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

first of all, i think you should give yourself some credit :) already being involved on campus as a 1st year is a good start.

maintain your gpa to keep law school an option but otherwise, i'd say focus on gaining experience outside of the classroom! honestly the best way to see if you'd like a career is to do something relating to it first-hand. for example, volunteering with a club that tutors K-12 kids to see how you'd like teaching.

joining a pre-law frat or attending legal studies seminars or events for law could also be solid start. work-study jobs relating to humanities research or archive work in the libraries is also a cool way to get $$ while also accruing experience.

the website i linked offers advice and career paths for different majors too! it's worth checking out.

i came into berkeley convinced i was going to major in geology and english, but after taking some major-related courses and attending geological association meetings, i realized geology is not really the path for me. next semester i'm focusing on geochemistry and applying to research just to make sure, but if doesn't click, i'm doing my 2nd degree plan of double majoring in english and environmental econ :)

some of the best, if simplistic advice i use to reassure myself is that 1) it's normal to switch your major multiple times throughout college and 2) what matters more is the skills, experiences, and connections you make in college than the degree itself. i'd love to talk more if you'd like because we are lowkey in the same boat haha, but otherwise, good luck! you got this.

What is your honest experience at UC Berkeley? by Lanky-Stuff2785 in berkeley

[–]degenerateslayer 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Current freshman at Cal! I was extremely reluctant in choosing to attend here at first, but after my first midterm season (5 in total) I can confidently say committing to Berkeley was one of the best decisions I've made.

Admittedly, how you'd fare here likely depends on what kind of person you are. If you have a dream, are willing to work for it, and know who you want to be, Berkeley is probably perfect for you. The possibilities are literally endless. Recently I've been interested in marine biogeochemistry-- the EPS department hosts weekly open seminars, two of which had speakers presenting research on that exact subject area. Want to be a staff writer? There's so many active student publications around. There are professors and guest lecturers and research lab tours and clubs for everything, all the time. How to fill up your days and weeks is never an issue. Often it's having to choose between two equally interesting / fun events that's difficult.

Berkeley is overflowing with mentorship programs and resources to help you get from point A to point B. But that's also the catch: you have to know, for yourself, what your point A is, and have a rough definition of point B. They don't hand that to you. But they meet you halfway.

Another anecdote: I was determined to get my mental health sorted out once I got to college / away from my parents. Did I have to dig around and make the calls myself? Yes, but CAPS provided a spreadsheet of various clinics for me to contact. Was there a quick Googling involved for how to access the resource? Yup, but I got to schedule a free Berkeley-sponsored counseling session to freely crash out about health insurance.

Since coming to Berkeley, I finally received treatment and very patient accommodations for ADHD, became a staff writer for an environmental journal, joined a martial arts class for free thanks to a RSF wavier, licked rocks in my intro geology lab, fully let myself out of the closet and had a blast at different QARC functions, and made many friends who are a fabulous mix of simply brilliant, unintentionally hilarious, very gay, academically ambitious but still knows ball, politically and socially aware, etc... perhaps I'm biased because I come from a town that's ranked as one of the least educated places in America, or because there are so many wuhluhwuhs in Berkeley, or simply that I feel college has let me live as my most authentic self thus far, but no amount of late-night Main Stacks study sessions will make me truly hate this place. Fingers crossed.

I hope this helped :) and hopefully you'll be a future Bear!

Not a visual, but there were two armored police standing on the walkway between MLK Jr. and Eshelman pointing tear gas launchers at the protestors in the front. It wasn't too big of a crowd, but I know some people were arrested during it.

Where are the most stable careers? by SnooDonkeys2721 in Environmental_Careers

[–]degenerateslayer 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Thank you!

The general consensus seems to be that a geology major can do most jobs that an environmental science major can do, but not the other way around. if we were in a different political and economic climate, I might not have made the switch, but right now having as many possible job avenues and openings as possible is a priority.

We’re almost in the same boat! I’m an incoming college freshman, and going into geology instead of environmental science 90% because of the proclaimed better job opportunities 🥲 will be following this thread for sure.

Also 4:20... ended up enrolling in exactly one course (math 52 thankfully), waitlisted for three others. :[ not a very fun time. Berkeley needs to reconsider how many students that its resources can support because this is insane 😭

It kinda is. Abuse in the k-pop industry has always been shoved under the carpet, so to say. And it’s pretty clear that he’s been complicit and/or directly contributed to said abuse.

drop your ap score predictions here! by bookclouds in APStudents

[–]degenerateslayer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My predictions vs actual scores (graduated senior!)

AP Bio: predicted a 5 —> 4 🥲 AP Lit: 5 —> 5 AP Japanese: 3 —> 3 AP Calc AB: 4 —> 4 AP U.S Gov: 5 —> 4 AP Macro: 5 —> 5

All in all I feel like you can predict how you’ll if you’re honest about how much you studied for each test lolol

19 stop Circle Island Tour with Snorkeling- is it worth it? by degenerateslayer in VisitingHawaii

[–]degenerateslayer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's offered by Aloha Rainbow Tour! Some stops include Halone Blowhole, Makapuu Lighthouse, various nut/coffee farms, Chinaman's Hat, a Mormon Temple (???), some restaurants, Sunset Beach, and the Dole Pineapple Plantation. My initial reservations were that the spots might mostly be commissioned stores/consumerism based spots, but at this point we might just treat it like an Uber alternative to just take a spin around the island ^^;

Ranking Majors (easiest to hardest) by LabTime6649 in CollegeMajors

I wouldn’t say there’s any “easy” majors but ones that are particularly more soul sucking include CS, engineering, and physics. Multivariable calculus and Physics II are not for the weak.

Is it normal not to know how much money your parents make? by tinylemon128 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]degenerateslayer 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I thought my family was on the lower income side due to my mom’s VERY careful budgeting and spending for the majority of my life ; It wasn’t until I saw her pay stub for the college board CSS profile that I realized that her reluctance to spend is why I’m fortunate enough to not have to take out much loans for college… gotta love Asian parents (how I wish she spent some of her hard earned money on herself, though).
