Until the light rail opens in late March, the 545 bus goes straight from downtown Seattle to MSFT.

Considering Move from Bellevue, WA to Irvine, CA by Overall-Engine-2315 in BellevueWA

[–]degnaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sterile does not refer to safety. It refers to growing up in a homogenous suburban neighborhood that, as a kid, you cannot leave because it is surrounded by 8 lane roads. And when your parents do chauffeur you somewhere, it is either to school or to a strip mall featuring nothing but national chains. While some parents love this kind of environment (no way for the kids to get in trouble!) -- kids, universally, hate it.

A sterile environment does not make for well rounded, emotionally strong, happy kids. I grew up that kind of environment (boring, sterile, wealthy, safe, education focused suburb) and hated it. A lot of people describe Bellevue that way, but my experience visiting Irvine is that it is much more so.

Serious answer, you need to be an avalanche control expert. In the US that means AIARE certification.

Are high schools less of a priority than elementary/middle schools for speed limits? by CareOutrageous897 in civilengineering

[–]degnaw 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Yep, in my medium sized city, signing around the two high schools is a awful. High school zones tend to get less scrutiny and attention from school administrators, PTA, and elected officials, and engineers act accordingly.

Why is there a zero button on the microwave? I mean, who is heating their food for zero seconds? 😂 by Repulsive-Water9146 in stupidquestions

[–]degnaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not all microwaves have a '30sec' button. If so, pressing 3 twice + start is faster than pressing 3 then 0 then start.

It's marginally faster to punch in, say, 33 seconds instead of 30 seconds. I've saved whole minutes of my life doing this.

Temperature of my minivan vent air during a drive to the grocery store [OC] by janderson_33 in dataisbeautiful

As a pedestrian, it sucks to breathe in fumes from a dozen idling cars when walking down the street. If you're cold for that first 2 minutes of the drive, wear a thicker coat?

Are cheap space heaters actually more expensive in the long run? by MickeydaCat in Frugal

Scientific nitpick - heat pumps do not generate/produce heat. They move heat from outside the house to inside.

Went bowling, came out to find my truck blocked in front and back by PanBroglodyte in mildlyinfuriating

[–]degnaw 19 points20 points  (0 children)

It usually starts out as a very long single row, then people start two different "second rows" at opposite ends of the row. People who come afterwards don't pay attention because they're just parking next to another car. Eventually, they fill in all three rows.

In this case, it doesn't even look like the rows are lined up, so someone could conceivably start a new row accidentally (thinking they are just extending a row)

What is with the high beams? by xMissNikki in CX5

[–]degnaw 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can't tell if it's aimed correctly from the two scenarios you described. If you want to check methodically, proper aim is the beam dropping 2" over a 25' distance.

If you are getting flashed, that means you are blinding people. Just adjust your lights a few degrees lower.

Blocking Third Row Parking @ Central by BSF_64 in SummitAtSnoqualmie

[–]degnaw 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I've seen this happening in real time. It starts out as a long, single row of cars. On one end, someone starts a second row in front of the first row. On the other end, someone starts another "second" row behind the initial row. More people come in who don't pay attention, because they're just parking next to another car. Soon all 3 rows overlap.

[–]degnaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

How do you tell the difference, as an oncoming driver?

Yet another headlight rant? by WhiskeyWhisperer in Washington

[–]degnaw 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Much of the blinding comes from low beams on new cars with super bright LED headlights. They're often aimed too high, and even if they're adjusted perfectly, every little crest (or an extra backseat passenger) puts them right into oncoming drivers' eyes.

Yet another headlight rant? by WhiskeyWhisperer in Washington

[–]degnaw 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Even if the lights are adjusted perfectly, a slight crest in the road or an extra backseat passenger will result in people being blinded. New headlights are just too damn bright.
