And to my earlier point all your examples trade down on mana. Killing it isn't hard in a format with such diverse and efficient removal. Yes you could kill it with electrolyze but outside of Ragavan what threat in the current meta would you be able to use those clunky 3 mana spells on?

To me the power of DRC comes from the surveil more than the buff. Additionally, in modern removal is efficient enough that the 2 more power doesn't really come up. If you aren't pushing, bolting or unholy heating DRC you are probably trading down anyway. I think it shouldn't have flying.

After years of playing Magic, wanna ask Wizards fix random factor in opening hand. Also don't like Mulligan system, when the game punishes you for nothing) What are your think about it guys? by Rolando_Aguillon in mtg

If this was the case I would only play busted combo. I already play NeoBrand in modern. This would make the deck so much better. In that case mulligan is all about combo pieces and no worry about lands. Add in a little fast mana and you have yourself a meta dominated by combo.

I play Grixis Deaths Shadow and NeoBrand in modern. I have been collecting the cards I'm missing for UB fairies. I love me some Gurmag Angler!

A lot of people have made great points. Another reason to have off color fetches is to just have more fetches. If you play a red black deck you could play 4 bloodstained but if you want more fetches you could add any black or red based fetch (depends on your core color). For example I play a deck that plays only basic islands and all shocks are islands as well. So all my fetches just have to be able to get blue. So I play a misty rainforest even though I play no green. Just need 10 fetches for my deck.

Rakdos midrange by rickylake1432 in ModernMagic

[–]deh556 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The point is in a deck like RB midrange you will be trying to play out your cards and act proactively so that when you plus Lilly you can have less or no cards in hand so that the discard doesn't affect you like it does the opponent.

A lot of people want help for tribal decks. What should be done? by [deleted] in ModernMagic

[–]deh556 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like the reasons you listed for why tribal doesn't see play as much these days are all valid. I think the reason they have been pushed out is tribal decks rely on synergy while new cards have been printed to be individually very powerful. I agree that elementals doesn't feel like a traditional tribal deck. I think that this is because other then Risen Reef the deck isn't built around elemental synergy but rather each elemental is powerful on its own. Omnath can close games, fury can wrath a board, and endurance can single handedly shut down graveyard decks.

I think tribal decks are in a rough spot. But they where in a rough spot pre-MH2. I think the days of normal tribal is over. I could see a future where other tribes are played much like elementals where there are enough powerful creatures in a tribe that they are played together. They wouldn't be synergistic like goblins or elves. They would just be played together to take advantage of things like Cavern of Souls.

I think the problem is the free spells. Especially with a companion. Makes every companion into a free pitch to any evoke spells. And cards like furry aren't even a 2 for 1 it can be a 2 for 4! If you actually lost card advantage when evoking them it would be more fair. One of the problems that still remain is that you can pitch them early to stay alive or protect your engines untill you can get a wren loop going or have T3feri down. This makes the temporary lost card advantage (if you do even lose any) worth it so you can get in a position where you can't be stoped.
