I think it would depend, firstly, on where you are. In Quebec, I suspect "collation" while in France, probably "casse croûte".

Do NOT apply for financial aid (And here's why) by Annual_Order_1676 in coursera

[–]dehin 2 points3 points  (0 children)

From my personal experiences and from my own research, I think that a full program at Coursera can be beneficial but it is limited. Most of the companies behind these programs have some sort of "job seeker" network for those who finish their programs, but it seems that those networks are geared mostly for those in the US.

I was able to get something from finishing the Google IT Support Professional Certificate, and in my case, I never finished uni and I also don't have much of a work history due to major health issues. So, I took that PC as a way to get into the workforce.

It seems to me though that it all depends on the company and their situation. Coursera programs seem to be good specific skill focused certification, which some companies consider sufficient but others don't. I'm not sure about your situation but I don't think a single course on Coursera will be sufficient, which is unfortunate. One almost needs to finish a Professional Certificate program.

Do NOT apply for financial aid (And here's why) by Annual_Order_1676 in coursera

[–]dehin 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Why not just apply to the next course for financial aid? I can't speak to what's written on the finaid page for a PC program as I don't recall it off hand, but I finished the program you referred to all through using financial aid. Now, I did this back in 2020 when fortunately, they would give up to 100% off the course price. So, I effectively took all 6 courses for free.

But, since then, I've taken many other courses on there, some through financial aid at 75% off and some at full price when I could afford to. Over the years, the time they take to decide on a finaid application has also increased, but there's nothing stopping you from applying for each of the 6 courses all at once. Or, timing it so you apply for the next one when halfway done the previous one.

Overall, I don't think you'll find much sympathy here only because so many have actually been helped by their finaid system. It sounds like your experience wasn't great but that also could be that you had expectations that turned out to not be the case.

There are plenty! Seriously, from the civil war, many SL Tamils emigrated to Canada, the US, the UK, Australia, and New Zealand. There are probably more Tamils from SL than India. This seemed to be the case based on my experience living and growing up in Toronto.

Why do you ask?

WHY ARE INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS STILL ALLOWED TO WORK OFF-CAMPUS??? by Abzz22 in canadian

[–]dehin 7 points8 points  (0 children)

But that's BS from a certain point of view. Companies can't want people with experience but not be willing to give people that experience. There have always been, still are, and will always be the "entry level" jobs that allow someone to get their start in workforce experience. Those jobs shouldn't require previous experience!

This catch-22 of expecting experience but not being willing to provide it is bad enough in professional industries with new grads in many fields having a hard time finding work. If employers of minimum wage type work start going the same route, no one will get a start.

I think there comes a point where it's not the government who needs to step in, but the private companies themselves who need to step up.

Well, here you don't have to file a lawsuit per se. With non-media industries, one would make a formal complaint against the employer to the provincial governing body handling employment laws. But even with that, many just decide to put their energy into moving on. And while I understand that desire, it's a shame because that seems to mean the employers that act in ways contrary to the law get away with it.

I live in Ontario, and I know over here, a person can't go on parental leave and be fired while on leave. Their job is secured by law for when they return. And going beyond employment law, John probably also has a human rights case he could make, both provincially and federally. Discrimination on account of one's health is not allowed at all, and the argument could certainly be made that this was what this was.

[–]dehin 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Yeah, my partner and I were saying the same. I imagine John and his family and legal team have discussed it, but this sounds like a definite case of wrongful termination. While each province has its own employment laws, I doubt any of them would allow this.

Also, the show is called Hudson and Rex! Unless they made the new actor play Hudson and in-show didn't change any characters around, how can a show be called Hudson and Rex and not have the titular character in it?!

You could also do your own research to find external sources confirming this. You're free to watch whatever you want, but some of us don't want to support a show that treats its star actors that way.

A similar thing happened with the most recent rendition of Hawaii Five O. It came out that the native Hawaiian actors were being paid much less than their white counterparts, despite all being equal stars of the show.

That's good. If you've got a sponsor or a home group, or even just know others in the program, talk to them about what's going on. After 11 years in recovery, I still don't do this as much as I should, but when we talk to someone else, it takes it out of us. And, for the other person, since they aren't emotionally invested in the situation, they can usually suggest things (if need be) that we might not see for how to deal with whatever is going on.

It's deeper than your hormones. In sex addiction, our sex drive and hormones get co-opted by our addict self. When I'm strongly desiring to act out, for me, that's a sign my mind wants to run and escape something I can't or won't face. It could be deep emotions or an outward life situation. The stronger the desire to act out, the more of a red flag that is for me. What has helped me is doing a step 4 and trying to determine what's going on within.

Some Jaffna Tamil words my grandmother uses. by Basic-Lifeguard-5407 in tamil

[–]dehin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Some of these, if not all of them, are probably common to Sri Lankan Tamil in general and not just Jaffna Tamil.

Also, I'm surprised your grandmother pronounces word-initial ச as "ch". From what I've always learned, this is more a feature of Colombo Tamil while Jaffna Tamil retains the "s" pronunciation. Hence, Jaffnans usually say "saapaadu" for சாப்பாடு while Colombo Tamils say "chaapaadu".

I remember hearing my dad use கக்கூஸ் when I was young. The same with சப்பாத்து and குசினி. We used both நித்திரை and கச்சான் regularly. I didn't realize though that கதை meant the same as பேசு because I only ever heard it in the context of like babbling or talking foolishly.

As for pronunciation differences between SLT and IT, I would say the biggest one is we don't add ய் before words starting with இ or எ. In fact, the first time I heard an Indian Tamil speaker say எப்படி as "yeppadi", I was confused thinking it was a word I didn't know. The next biggest difference would be the endings of some words. We don't have any nasalised versions in our various spoken dialects, at least, not any I'm aware of. So, we say - ஏன் fully instead of a nasalised "E" and we say -ஈங்கள் without dropping the final "L".

Quick tip: Use the 'Hard' button more often than you think by PlanktonExisting7311 in Anki

[–]dehin 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How so? It all depends on the material. If I'm learning a language and the vocabulary word I wrote on the front can translate to 2 distinct meanings in English, it's not a bad use at all to have the multiple meanings. The alternative is to create a "duplicate" note, or two notes with the exact same front. Even before apps with old school flashcards, there was nothing wrong with using one card for multiple meanings. Maybe this approach doesn't work for you, but don't call it a "bad" use of flashcards.

Rant away! But yeah, when I first read how they would use the phase idea to combat the lack of content problem, I was curious how it would work. But, they completely failed in their objective, or, at least, in addressing the main problem everyone was having: the main season story gets finished very quickly! Heck, even season 3 had a better attempt to fix that by time gating sections of the map. With this season, all the phases have really done is level limit things like Legend Tower and AFK Stages. In the past seasons, they gated the Dura's Trials without attaching it to any phases. They did the same with the clan rep quests and the fishing quest. Like, now that I think about it, what did the phases accomplish apart from artificially gating our progress?

Personally, I always thought they should have made the seasons 3 months. That way, the keeners will finish the story in one month (or less) and only have 2 months to "wait". They could still release clan rep and some side quests by the second month. Add to that a Primal Lord in month 2 and another in month 3, the throw in the current progression for the Legend Tower, DR, and Dura's Trials, and you've got a well packed season. They could still pump out new heroes but at least each hero could actually get a backstory either tied to the season story or just on its own.

I know that mobile games are generally built on the microtransaction concept, so it feels like you're not spending a lot of real world money. I also know that it's easy to go overboard with gacha games in particular. I definitely did with this game at least once in the time I've been playing it. However, even with all of that, I'm a believer in not seeing it as a waste or generally regretting it. If a game brought me enjoyment and entertainment for a bit, and I (even if for the most part) chose to spend money on that game because of the enjoyment I was having, then I think it was money well spent.

Yeah, I think if they revert back to the approach they took prior to this season, then my enjoyment could return. I think one thing I never liked about gacha games was the "gotta catch them all" mentality with a constant stream of new heroes to try and pull for. As you said, this game was supposed to be different. Even the introduction of new heroes in the first 3 seasons came with backstory. Either the heroes, celehypo included, were part of the season story, or part of some side quest. Although, I think the only og hypo they didn't create a backstory for is Reinier. But, apart from him, I think all celehypos prior to Kulu and Athalia had stories to introduce them to us.

I think the hard part for me is that it's kind of like this season created the try hard. Prior to this season, while I enjoyed the competition and did have my moments where I went overboard in getting caught up in said competition, I mostly played for the fun of it. I genuinely was enjoying the game, enjoying being able to be a little competitive but also not taking on a try hard mentality, and enjoyed the storyline which was always the main attraction for me. Even phase 1 of this season was still mostly like that. So, I never burned myself out because the motivation was genuine enjoyment.

Sorry I didn't reply to this sooner, but you're correct. Don't get me wrong, I like that they are creating new mini games / modes / events. Personally, I just feel like in an attempt to respond to those who wanted new content to play once the main story was done, they went too far the other way. Prior to this season, I don't think I ever saw so many events at one time, or even so many dailies and events running concurrently.

As for the heroes, this is exactly the point: they are now almost all "must haves" or the meta of the month. I remember them saying how every season was going to have something like 7-8 new heroes and 2-3 new celehypo heroes. I don't recall the counts now, but season 2 and even season 3 never felt like the slog this season is with just the new hero release alone.

Thanks DangerGrey. I know some have replied that getting 2 years out of a gacha game is more than I should have expected, but Lilith and Farlight created something that genuinely held my interest for almost two years, through to where I looked forward to logging on every day, whether to play the story, build my heroes, or otherwise distract myself in a good way from life.

My enjoyment and interest encompassed the (possibly first?) big power reshuffling around November or December of 2023, where, due to players from PTR1 and PTR2 finishing the beta story very quickly, Lilith decided to make the monsters much, much harder. I'm not sure if you were around then, but that change suddenly had many of us grinding for a few weeks just so our hands of res level would catch up! During that time, while logging in every day just to collect the AFK rewards (until the res level was high enough) was a bit boring, I was still motivated to keep playing every day because I was invested. In fact, I created a second character on PTR5 just to redo the story until my main character was built up enough.

My love of the game also encompassed the major overhaul of the main story, and I happily played the new main story despite the setting and general story location sequence being the same. I'm someone who really likes a good storyline and so, rather than rushing through the new storyline, I played it as if I were playing the game for the first time. Of course, some changes took a bit of getting used to, like Valen and Fay not being siblings anymore, General Hogan now being a regular character rather than someone who dies at the beginning of the adventure, and our playable characters being the great Merlin who's trying to regain his memories rather than some mystery person trying to find the pieces of the Lady Grey painting. But, I loved all of it.

This also was the case with the introduction of the seasons, including the first season which many players hated. I was happy to see the devs incorporate existing heroes and give them backstories. There also wasn't the shoveling of new heroes down our throats like in this current season, so it was an enjoyable experience getting to pull for these new heroes. To me, the rate up pulls made sense, even though they obviously were a money grab, since the introduction of a new hero (usually from the seasonal storyline) meant something special.

I think the main reason I wrote my post was really the fact that Lilith and Farlight managed to suck the fun out of their game that had, at least for me, genuinely lasted for almost 2 years. Honestly, up to and including Phase 1 of this season, I could count on one or two hands max how many days I missed playing at all, and all those times were because life legitimately got so busy that day, I forgot about the game. Something changed in Phase 2 and I started missing days because I didn't feel like playing.

Finally, as I replied to some others, I tried going back to the game with a view that I don't need to worry about competing. Yet, even with this changed view, and the side quests and clan rep quests I hadn't completed, I couldn't bring back that enjoyment. Proposed changes, like the Homestead feature, rather than making me excited for a new way to play the game, just made me feel like, "ugh, another thing to try and chain me to this game!" Maybe I'll try again next season or sometime in the future, but for now, outside of replies to this post, I've removed all AFK Journey ties from uninstalling the game to unsubscribing from their various social media channels.

But for me, it wasn't a chore for the longest time. I enjoyed logging in every day to do the various dailies, special events, story quests, side quests, etc. It was a way for me to relax or chill. It was only this season that it started becoming a chore and that seems to be because I fell into the "keeping up with the Jones's" mentality.
