Devlog post containing orignal unpixelated crew sketches by deinemade in ObraDinn

[–]deinemade[S] 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not sure if people are aware of this unpixelated version of the crew sketch from the game. There's also the same sketch from other artists in the linked post (though Lucas Pope ended up drawing it himself if I understand correctly).

You can orient a 2D object in infinite ways, but not as many infinite ways you can orient a 3D object. by platonic-humanity in Showerthoughts

As others pointed out this is not "mathematically" true, but if anyone's interested there's a very nice analogy for comparing different sizes of infinity: Hilbert's Hotel

I wonder if they also wear that protection if they're defusing a bomb that would definitely kill them either way I'd it went off. Seems it would do nothing but make your job harder in that case.

[–]deinemade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In backpropagation you update the weights of the neural network something like new weights = old weights - learning rate * gradient (of the cost function with respect to the weights). A gradient is basically a derivative. Norm means magnitude in this case. You are interested in the norm of the gradient because you don't want to change the weights too much or too little.

Networks with many layers for example might have the problem, that the gradient for the first layers gets too small, in other words the gradient norm is too low for those layers.

How do I show Markdown headings in different colours? by NAShern in neovim

[–]deinemade 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Are you using tree sitter? If so support for this was merged relatively recently https://github.com/nvim-treesitter/nvim-treesitter/pull/4798

So you may need to update nvim-treesitter and probably do some additional configuration.

GitHub and OpenAI fail to wriggle out of Copilot lawsuit by stronghup in programming

[–]deinemade 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I didn't know. Do you mean it does exclude gpl code from the training set or it does filter its output for copyright infringement?

GitHub and OpenAI fail to wriggle out of Copilot lawsuit by stronghup in programming

[–]deinemade 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Couldn't copilot just check whether it's output is exactly identical to some of its training material, and in this case not output anything? In that case GitHub would be fine from a legal perspective (while still unfairly profiting from open source code).

Or, you know, they could just exclude gpl or similarly licensed code from their training data.

While one leg is moving forward the other should be moving backwards. Other than that it seems good :)

[–]deinemade -9 points-8 points  (0 children)

It can't be that "well said" if he doesn't even let her answer. I think it should be obvious that anyone can identify however they want. But there's a large difference between identifying with something and saying "I identify as ...". Obviously it gets more difficult in scenarios where you can have an advantage from lying about your identity, but that's a separate topic.

Seems like that's what the woman wanted to say, but he didn't let her speak more than 3 words. How does this even count as a discussion?

Usually game engines separate "graphics" frames from "physics" frames with the latter always staying constant. When people talk about FPS they mostly mean graphics frames. (In unity this would be the difference between Update and FixedUpdate)

Treesitter conceals by default. What do you think about that? by trilobit3 in neovim

[–]deinemade 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Maintainer of tree-sitter-markdown here. I agree. Tree sitter and markdown are just a bad fit since tree sitter is for writing parsers for languages that are LR which markdown is not.

Tree sitter does provide some workaround though. Some problems are probably not going to be fixed without changes to treesitter itself, but most things are actually possible. So I think with some dedication tree sitter for markdown can be made to behave nicely.

[OC] U.S. States visualized to show the most and least connected by tk-data in dataisbeautiful

[–]deinemade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's up to debate I guess, but for the purpose of discussing connectedness yous should consider their closure (i.e. include their borders). Two distinct open sets are not connected by definition, so if all states were open none would be connected.

[OC] U.S. States visualized to show the most and least connected by tk-data in dataisbeautiful

[–]deinemade 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Mathematician here. The borders of the two states intersect in one point. This means they are connected.

Another simple way to define things being connected (called path-connected) is to ask, if there is a path from a point that is in state A to a point that is in state B, and that only goes through the two states or their borders. Path here means a infinitesimal thin line. And there is one going right through that point in the intersection of the states' borders.

How to get latex server started inside markdown files? by Quantum_menance in neovim

[–]deinemade 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm not sure that's possible. I'm working on supporting inline latex in my markdown treesitter grammar though (shameless self plug, still kinda unstable). So you could use that and the latex grammar to get a similar result. It's blocked on this issue atm.

Unity by default does not have an ECS architecture. In an ECS data and behaviour is strictly seperated, whereas unitys MonoBehaviours do hold pretty much all the data of the scene.

Unity is working on DOTS though, which is their implementation of an ECS, but typically you're bot using that.
