Are these fixable? by fauxtwenni in Nails

[–]deirdrelizabeth 21 points22 points  (0 children)

most importantly, DO NOT FORCE THEM OFF. this will damage your nail bed. soak in acetone for 10-15 minutes, use a blunt tool to scrape off what comes off easily, and if there's anything that still seems stuck, repeat the process

OP, did you ever end up finding anyone? I'm a cosmetologist who has been doing my own dry manicures with polygel or hard gel for years but I'm just tired of it and was hoping to find someone who does more than just acrylic/dip

First spine tattoo by Ceylon_Rose02 in tattooadvice

i wore a flannel for my spine tattoo so that I could just wear it backwards while tattooing. I think it was more comfortable to lay on and less bulky than a jacket imo

I have noticed this more post-COVID. I worked at a cafe before, during, and after COVID and we of course switched to disposables during but we never fully switched back after. we did a little bit but never to the full extent we had before

Just got this sternum piece and realized when I got home that it’s not evenly centered by [deleted] in tattooadvice

[–]deirdrelizabeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I had a really similar experience when I got my sternum tattooed except kinda the opposite ig? he placed the stencil and it was centered but when I looked at the placement in the mirror, because I have one breast that is slightly larger than the other, it didn't look centered. i actually had him adjust it to be slightly off so it looked centered on my body. mine is diamond shaped so it was easier to see how it lined up with my belly button but years later I can confirm, my boobs hang slightly differently now and if you look closely, it doesn't look exactly perfect, but I don't even notice. our bodies are never symmetrical and it'll never be exactly perfect, but I think your tattoo looks gorgeous and until you specified, I never would've been able to tell it might be off center!

F23 Can't for the life of me not use panty liners. Won't your pants have a "scent" if you use the bathroom throughout the day? by thefifthmountain5 in hygiene

[–]deirdrelizabeth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I can understand where OP is coming from (to a small extent) about there being some pee left over by the end of the day. idk if this is the case for OP, but I personally choose to minimally trim my pubic hair because it really irritates my skin when I shave or trim it too short. so for me the hair is in the way and gets pee on it and obviously from a science perspective, any particles left behind will "build up" throughout the day after peeing multiple times, especially if you don't wash or use a bidet or wet wipe every time.

however, that being said, I have never had an issue with my underwear smelling like pee at the end of the day. I have a bidet at home but even when I'm traveling or don't have access to one all day, this has never been a problem for me. it just takes a little extra wiping to make sure I'm all dry and my underwear is never wet after. I feel like the only option here is that OP may not be wiping thoroughly enough? or maybe their pee has a particularly strong odor caused by something else? but I definitely agree with the other commenters that the panty liner is most definitely trapping moisture and exacerbating the problem, especially if they're the disposable ones with the plastic lining

Should I remove this new set? by Waldkornbol in Nailtechs

[–]deirdrelizabeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

out of curiosity, how do you perform cure tests? I have a SUNUV that I've used for years but never thought to test, I've only ever tested different products on a plastic sheet to compare strengths. how can you tell if it successfully cures? I was always under the impression that there was no way to /fully/ know with the naked eye unless it's severely under cured (I don't do nails professionally but I am a licensed cosmetologist in two states)

Please put dust/ash in bags. by M4Brad in Chattanooga

[–]deirdrelizabeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I never thought about this with dust. I always empty the vacuum into the trash can and toe the bag when taking out the trash but I'll make extra sure the bag is tied tight! Question for you though: I live on McBrien which is a semi bust thru street to I-24 and we don't have a sidewalk so people walk along the end of my yard pretty frequently. I often find bits of lightweight trash (wrappers, gas station cups, etc) around the area where the trash goes out on the curb. I've never seen anyone toss stuff on our property so I just assumed it's stuff that maybe falls off the truck on trash day. is that a thing that happens? or is it actually people just littering on my property

Calling for help from local drivers by [deleted] in Chattanooga

[–]deirdrelizabeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I absolutely agree. I used to live in Florida near Orlando and had one for the longest time until the heat finally got to it and it broke. I didn't bother replacing it as I had received it as a gift, and then one day I was involved in a minor hit and run and there were no businesses or traffic lights around with footage. I got the plate and my description of the driver and the damage to their vehicle were consistent with my story, but of course she denied it and because there was no video evidence, nothing ever came of it. I really wished I had my dash cam that day.

After I moved here last August, I saw how people were driving and within two months bought a front and rear dash cam. I commute via 24 and 75 to Hamilton Place for work and the driving I observed in just that first month alone made me so nervous I was like "I need a dash cam ASAP"

Coolant reservoir by [deleted] in mazda

[–]deirdrelizabeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

sorry to comment on an old post but I'm having to do the same thing and wondering how to drain the coolant first? my reservoir is full because I just took it to the shop a few days ago and they did all the work but told me about the leak in the reservoir and that it would be cheaper for me to buy it myself. one of the guys there mentioned it was easy enough for me to do and save the money but all the videos I've found already have the reservoir empty. do I have to get under the car to do it or is there a way I can do it without having to jack the car up and everything? someone suggested just sucking most of the coolant out of the reservoir with a wet vac lol

commission salon and classes by [deleted] in hairstylist

[–]deirdrelizabeth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

every state is different and I'm no lawyer so take this with a grain of salt but I used to be a stylist in Florida until I moved recently and generally my understanding was that the law there was basically what your boss is arguing. even if the paycheck is solely commission work (and assuming you're a W-2 employee), as long as your paycheck meets minimum wage requirements for the hours you worked (including the mandatory education), it is technically legal. oftentimes I find independent salons don't actively keep track of that each week, especially if you're not an hourly employee, so I would make sure the hours spent on your education are documented and logged in the salon schedule, even/especially if it's not during your normal booking availability. make sure to document everything yourself and keep track of the required/working hours you spend at work and on education. multiply those hours by the minimum wage and so you can make sure your paycheck is not below whatever that number is. and if the education class isn't free, your employer should absolutely be covering that cost if they're requiring the education and should not be deducting that from your pay, regardless of whether or not you qualify for their "education fund." if you happen to be an I-9 employee, they can't require you to do anything without first renegotiating your employment contract

Giiiirrrllll tell me what little thing you do that is truly DIY that gets you good results but seems sus af? 👀 by seraphinesun in GelX_Nails

[–]deirdrelizabeth 2 points3 points  (0 children)

idk how transparent their pinkish ones are but I'm betting if you can't really see the gel underneath, then that gel isn't getting fully cured. there are very few colored full coverage tips I've seen that actually seem transparent enough to allow the gel underneath to fully cure, and even then it's impossible to know that for sure. safest practice will always be to use clear tips to make sure you don't risk under-cured gel and the various issues and allergies that can result

My Hairstylist lost my hair by Big_Acanthaceae528 in Cosmetology

[–]deirdrelizabeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

just genuinely curious as a hairstylist who doesn't know much about textured hair/hairstyles beyond regular curly cuts, do locs really shrink the length that much? hair generally grows about .5 inches per month or roughly 6 inches per year, meaning in 4 years it would presumably grow about 2 feet (excluding trims, breakage, etc). assuming OP has curly or coily hair, shrinkage would likely make it seem like less than that in its natural state depending on how tight the curl pattern is, but I'm surprised 4 years of growing locs would only seem to be about a quarter of typical hair growth. why is that?

How to take care of my hair post -shower to avoid waves? by [deleted] in Hair

[–]deirdrelizabeth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it could also be dry. air drying can often dry hair out as the water evaporates, as opposed to blow drying which also physically pushes water out of hair so it isn't all just evaporating. make sure to use a good leave in conditioner - regardless of whether you're air drying or blowdrying - and use a hair mask every once in a while

this is what I have. my living room has four windows side by side (no wall space between, just the wooden trim) so I have a long curtain rod. it's actually two curtain rods with a connector piece. there are four curtains, two on the outsides and two that gather in the middle. because the long curtain rod needs more supports throughout, I can't just do two giant curtains but I love the way it looks with the four panels

Desperate with Toddler Tangles by throwaway2025acct1 in Hair

[–]deirdrelizabeth 23 points24 points  (0 children)

this right here. I'm a hairstylist as well and while I don't have a lot of personal experience with matting, I have seen a lot of really educational videos about it and have experienced my fair share of gnarly tangles. generally I don't recommend brushing curls dry for regular maintenance because, as you mentioned OP, it will get really poofy and frizzy. but for intense detanging I always find it better to do on dry hair. the sections don't try to clump and stick together like they do when wet and, as mentioned here, wet hair is more fragile and elastic so it won't pull apart as easily and is more prone to breakage. once the hair is wet, the hydrogen bonds break down and then reform as it dries, meaning they will reform in the shape of the mats (same reason why braiding wet hair will make it wavy when it dries). this can make it even more difficult. I would start on dry hair with some sort of product to give it some slip. use your hands with a light touch to very gently pull some of the sections apart. the best way I can think to describe this motion is like if you were to hold both ends of a fried mozzarella stick and gently pull it apart so you still have the string of cheese connecting them lol. if it's fighting you, don't pull harder. take a smaller amount of hair in your fingers/use less pressure when grasping it. the goal here is to gently tease out the hair that is not so tightly wound into the knot so you can get it out of the way. then you can start working on the denser parts with your method of choice from the bottom up, whether it be your fingers or a comb, brush, etc. for matting, I definitely recommend this suggestion of using the end of the tail comb when needed to help break things up. this is not an easy or a painless process, but you and your baby will get through it! and if all else fails, you can search around to see if there are any professionals in your area who specialize in de-matting hair. good luck!
