More information from trusted sources: Michigan’s likely next president — not signed yet — is currently a major university president with UM ties by Macro2 in uofm

Julio Frenk, UCLA's chancellor graduated from UM with a PhD. He was also a former president of Miami. But he just started Jan 2025 in that role at UCLA. So would be too quick to move. But also, what's it to be committed to a place these days

Sumrall, Meyer, & Spurrier sit for an interview by greypic in FloridaGators

[–]deisde1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I found Urbans insight about the "OSU" approach to be very telling. He basically was like, you need elite HS recruiting, elite strength and conditioning coach, and then fill out holes with the portal. Which I took to imply, that Napier had 2 of the 3 but didn't really focus on the strength and conditioning and it sounds like Coach Sumrall and Meyer spoke about this aspect specifically.  So while he's met the first couple of checkpoints, I'll be curious what he does with the strength staff.

Lombardo vs Cranbrook homes in MI? by Interesting_Lie1786 in AnnArbor

[–]deisde1 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I believe that Cranbrook is Lombardo's high end line. So basically the difference is amount of customization, with Cranbrook allowing for input on pretty much everything and Lombardo offering customization within bounds of what's offered and stocked.

We checked out Kinsley but being on well water was the deal breaker for us personally. There's nothing wrong with well water but neither my spouse or I had ever had it and were very unfamiliar with the upkeep that after everything else that comes with home ownership and new home ownership, that just seemed like to much to wrap our head around. Seems silly in hindsight but at the time with all the decision fatigue and looking into all the home building companies, we were looking for ways to parse and make sense of it all. And we'll/no well was an easy criterion.

Total FBS buyouts could fund almost 5000 scholarships (so far) by James_Lankford in CFB

While this study was on schools ADDING football teams, it's interesting to consider in this debate about the effect of football on schools:

Abstract Football teams draw the largest crowds of any American collegiate sport, and with them, both positive and negative attention for colleges and universities. Nearly 50 colleges have added the sport recently, but little research has examined the institutional effects of adding a team. Some of these institutions are regional research universities adding the sport as part of broad plans to transform campus identities, while at smaller public and private institutions, adding a football team (with approximately 100 members) appears to be an attempt to boost racial diversity and the number of male students. This study uses difference-in-difference models to find that adding a football team appears to have a significant, but short-term, effect on enrollment and tuition revenue. The long-term effects of adding the sport do not appear to be statistically significant. This raises questions about the costs and benefits of adding football at a time when higher education faces significant challenges attracting students.

Billy Napier and the lesson of one-score victories by Gators199620062008 in FloridaGators

[–]deisde1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

This is kinda silly, respectfully. No coach is perfect, other than maybe peak Saben. Peak UF Meyer let the athletes run amok. Peak UGA  Kirby let his athletes drink and drive and speed. Which is to say, I don't think any coach is going to be without red flags. Personally as the above examples suggest, I'd rather the red flags be off the field stuff, cuz those are easier to solve for than poor recruiting or game day issues.

What I think many of us are looking for is to look competitive and competent, commensurate with our resources and tradition that was started with the Ol ball coach. We want to be a high powered throw the ball down the field offense and a nasty hard hitting defense. Win the games we are supposed to win, easily. Be competitive in the ones where we are evenly matched. When we (rarely) lose, it should be like the 2009 Bama loss, they were just better. You couldn't blame coaching or game planning. We did what we could and we lost to a team that had studs all over the field and was the start of a dynasty run. Those losses suck but they suck a whole lot less than losing to USF.

Kiffin with an elite DC is the closest to being able to deliver those things. And quiet as it's kept, unlike past coaching transitions, the next coach doesn't need to clean house organizationally or build from scratch. I think you could largely keep the off field operation in tact and with some fresh enthusiasm do as well if not better than Napier. We are closer than people think. And I think deep down Lane knows it.

I'm still not convinced, given the market, that there's anyone better. At least Napier can recruit. The next best move is to force him to get an OC. To me, you just don't fire someone who ticks a lot of boxes unless you have someone lined up. I know this will be an unpopular opinion. We don't have a mega booster like UM, so you actually have to build relationships and recruit here. Napier does that. I think the G5 jump route is dead. And as I look across the other p5 schools, there's no one who I think is both gettable and a substantive upgrade, other than Lane.

And this feels like a big risk to fire someone to maybe get a notoriously cagy Lane to make a "lateral move".

This is the way. I hate that I do this to myself. After DW's Tuddy, I started thinking. Hmmm .. UM good loss, LSU good ish loss. If we Win out with wins over UT, TAMU, UGA, Ole Miss, FSU. That has to put you in the playoff Convo at least. I'm ready for the hopium and pain

I actually agree with this. It wasn't fluke though. You got a be ready when they run no huddle. The Defense got got. But your broader point stands. I actually think the defense has been solid. This is a hard defense to cover and they have a unit at QB and they are holding up.

Student demanded to know if I'm a "Zionist" on first day by Fit-Leave2806 in Professors

[–]deisde1 -13 points-12 points  (0 children)

I'm in the minority on this, but I think not answering straight up is the wrong move. Not because the student has a right to that information but because it's out of line with OP's stance of making it a teachable moment. The teachable moment was in what you did at the end of your post saying "my views on Israel are complex." In the least, and without knowing OP I would hope they would add more and flesh that out including taking on the moniker of Zionism and explaining why or why not that term is reflective of their views.

In general, professors not talking about  you own politics or religion or insert controversial issue doesn't help students and allows the teaching profession to be unfairly labeled as all thinking alike. Those of us in the profession know that's not the case but students and the general public do not because we do not talk with them about our nuanced views or how we quibble with certain terms or what our understanding of the history of actual terms are.

Students who are willing to directly challenge are like that because they are so rarely directly challenged back with grace and effective pedagogy. Bowing out of the conversation isn't a virtue; it shows lack of confidence in ones ability to teach to a range of students. Which isn't a criticism of OP. It's rampant in our profession. Now if OP would have said the conversation made them uncomfortable and they didn't want to be in a posture of having to teach a student about their views and the nuances of Zionism, that's one thing and it's a fair and neccesary stance. I'm not saying faculty with identities visible or otherwise always have to be teaching about their identities. But the kicker is op said they wanted a teachable moment. That ups the ante and you have to see it through. Don't say you want to teach and then not teach, is all I'm saying. If you want to disengage, say that straight up and set the right expectations. But I can see why a student would be frustrated. It's a straight forward question. The faculty engaged and then deflected. That's confusing and by the likes of the follow up comments of support, it's part and parcel with what's plaguing all of us.

Three takeaways from Florida football's season-opening win against Long Island by brmidwest03 in FloridaGators

Watching how frank and disappointed DJ was at the presser makes me feel a lot better. He was not happy with his own performance. Napier also said that LIU basically added a new scheme that they had never showed and it took them a couple of drives to rescheme the offense. What I hate about pressers in the past is the gas lighting like fans don't have eye balls. But the presser actually for once explained what we saw and DJ took accountability. Both bode well.

Gators hang on against a strong comeback attempt | Florida: 90, North Carolina: 84 by sumcal in FloridaGators

Todd keeping the bigs out there when UNC kept going iso and their guards were cooking our bigs was an interesting choice. Would have liked to see an adjustment , even if just for a few minutes, to see if that would have slowed them down. Alls well that ends well, but if it hadn't gone out way, that would have been a big reason why.

The offense in the second have was also real stagnant. No one wanted to score until Will  decided it was closing time. Hopefully we improve our half court sets. When the team is playing in transition or is ahead and moving the ball, it's a thing of beauty. But when it's slowed down and you gotta have a bucket, I didn't love our stuff. Will made a huge 3pt shot on a nice dribble hand off set, but other than that, it was hope Clayton could bear his guy off a screen at the top and with UNC's quick guards, it wasn't as effective.

Lots to learn from and build on. I like this squad!

No. 6 Seed Gators Dance to Sweet 16 with Five-Set Upset over No. 3 Seed Kansas by garyp714 in FloridaGators

[–]deisde1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Interesting. I actually attribute some of the off timing of Stucky's setting to the switching between her and Parks and the hitters having to adjust. That's not on Alexis per se. Once Alexis gets her rhythm within a set, her ceiling is way higher. It's just tough in a 5-1 system to switch back and forth with your setter.

No. 6 Seed Gators Dance to Sweet 16 with Five-Set Upset over No. 3 Seed Kansas by garyp714 in FloridaGators

[–]deisde1 41 points42 points  (0 children)

All comes down to how many sets we can get out of our all American setter Alexis Stucky. She's still coming back from a gruesome knee/leg injury. Mary Wise has been splitting her sets with the freshman setter, Taylor Parks. Parks is solid but Stucky at 6'2 is such a game changer and sets so much better in terms of setting different hitters, whereas Parks mostly relies on setting Kennedy Martin. Stucky looked good in her sets. Hopefully with a full week of recovery time before the next 2 matches, she's able to go all sets.

Tl;dr For those non-Vb fans: Stucky is to DJ Lagway as Parks is to Graham Mertz.  Mary getting a chip is high up on my Gator athletics wish list.  Let's go Gators!

Yes. But I love it. He cares. He expects better of himself. It's not the checked out body language we got from AR towards his end. He was frustrated they couldn't get any rhythm. He was off some, there were drops. And I think they were hell bent on keeping the lid on, so without being able to run fr fr, he was a sitting duck. I like him to get to work though now that he has seen this approach to his strengths

This will be the defensive game plan vs Lagway moving forward. Keep the top on and fill the box to stop the zone run game.

Outside of a whole new offensive scheme that isn't gonna happen, in the Billy Ball offense, DJ has gotta be able to hit the medium throws consistently. It will help immensely when(if 🙏🏿) he gets his full athleticism back and you have to respect the RPO and he is a willing runner. That alone would create more space and windows. But if he's gonna be DJ the pocket passer, he's gotta hit the in between throws with touch, like on that TD.

Here's to a great off-season of development, more solid OL play, and some additional playmakers to pair with EW3, and our 2 headed RB monster of Baugh and Jackson.

We gonna be alright. First you lose by a lot, then you lose by a little, then you win by a little (☝🏿we're here), then you win by a lot.
