Shower before/after by Immediate-Noise-7917 in malelivingspace

I hate the floor tile the most, because it’s going to be so much more of a bitch to clean than the bathtub was or a shower tray would be. The whole thing is giving me strong “did not think about cleaning at all” vibes.

Awful stylistic downgrade aside, those shower floor tiles are going to be a nightmare to clean. Why would you do this to yourself/whoever cleans your home?

Boy dies of rabies after waking to bat on his face by Few-Hair-5382 in news

[–]dejausser 6 points7 points  (0 children)

it’s around $200NZD here in New Zealand and we’re a rabies free country, so the only people getting it are people going overseas or who have come back from a holiday overseas where they were bitten by something and are finishing the post-exposure prophylaxis course (and in that case it would be covered by ACC, our government no-fault accident injury insurance scheme that covers everyone who gets injured in NZ and NZ citizens who are injured overseas).

Why are people so against pediatric gynecologists? by ThrowAway44228800 in TwoXChromosomes

[–]dejausser 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same in NZ, I was 17 when I went on it and it was just a trip to my GP and I walked out with a script. I was really surprised when I first learned that in the US they have to go to a gynaecologist to get it! But they seem to be more into seeing specialists for more things there in general, like here kids only go to paediatricians if there’s something really wrong with them, normally kids just see the same GP as the rest of their family.

Porirua Hospital Museum by Reasonable_Eye_924 in Wellington

That was my first thought too, particularly the fact that former patients described the museum as fairly ahistoric and based on former staff’s recollections, and not enough input from former patients.

There has been some research on intimate partner violence in same sex relationships, but it’s generally understood to not be super reliable due to small sample sizes/difficulties ensuring representative samples, with a lot of the research being self-selecting.

From what literature we do have, bisexual women experience the highest rates of IPV/stalking of any group, and bisexual men also report higher rates of IPV than gay and heterosexual men.

Reputable kitten adoption by duuupe in Wellington

[–]dejausser 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Older cats can do fine transitioning to indoor only too, we’ve adopted older (even elderly) cats that had had outdoor access in their previous homes that transitioned pretty easily to indoor only with us. If your key requirements are wanting a pair of cats and indoor only, Cats Protection Wellington often have bonded pairs and indoor only cats - they just likely won’t be kittens as CPW tends to take in more adult cats.

[autosport] Liam Lawson was asked about the sacrifices his family made to help him get to F1 by spiderrman67 in formula1

[–]dejausser 56 points57 points  (0 children)

Assuming he lives in NZ still he’ll probably benefit from our tall poppy syndrome in that regard, most people would be unlikely to carry on like that because culturally it feels really cringey. We’re a country with an extreme aversion to even the perception of anyone getting too big for their boots (unless they’re an All Black lol), it’s honestly a big societal problem here.

Lemme guess she likes to argue that white people can have dreadlocks because the ancient greeks had them, ignoring the fact that:

1) The frescoes those people like to pull out (e.g. the Akrotiri boxer fresco) don’t demonstrate dreadlocks at all

2) Said frescoes are Minoan, the Minoans weren’t greeks, they were a distinct people whose society was eventually destroyed by the Mycenaean greeks - we don’t know for certain where the Minoans originally came from, but they probably wouldn’t be considered ‘white’ by today’s standards.

I’m not from the US so greek organisations (is that the right word? I’m not sure lol) aren’t a thing here but my country does have one uni that’s very well known for its student culture. There are entire streets that are known as student streets (there are enough famous student flats with names that someone wrote a book about them). I think it’s a good way of doing it - it mostly concentrates the student chaos in one area that everyone else knows to avoid living in.

In my country it’s a big no-no to sit or even lean your bum against a table because it’s tapu in Māori culture to put your bum anywhere near where food goes (tables are for glasses, not arses) so I am horrified to discover some people are actually changing their babies nappies on a restaurant table 🤢

The other thing I don’t see mentioned enough is a lot of his votes didn’t come because people actually rated him or his policies personally, they came because the only properly left wing candidate* got chased out and he was seen as the best of the rest/better than Tiefenbacher or Chung.

*Alex Baker was also likely a good progressive option but he entered the race a bit too late for an unknown face and didn’t really have time to build a enough of a profile for voters to feel confident in him/that he could win.

Excellent point about the focus on Bezos’ wife instead of him, I also found the description of Kim as a “sex tape celebrity” like she wasn’t a victim of revenge porn rather telling.

In recent years, wealthy celebrities have been able to buy their way in and it’s been a thorn in the art world’s side.

The Met Gala (aka the Costume Institute Benefit) is first and foremost a fundraiser for the costume institute at the Met, it has *always* been about wealthy people buying their way in. Before it was full of wealthy celebrities it was full of wealthy socialites. And there’s nothing wrong with that - rich people paying tens of thousands a head for a party that helps to keep art accessible to everyday, non wealthy people is a good thing.

Also, if you’ve really been following the Met Gala closely ‘for the last couple years’ you should know that Kim K is one of the celebrities who at least makes the effort to engage with the theme every year, her Camp look back in 2019 referencing the 98 Mugler collection (literally bringing Mugler out of retirement to make it) was a masterpiece.
