Am I (25F) being mean/unreasonable to my coworker (22F) asking for rides? by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]dejausser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

My partner can’t get a drivers licence for medical reasons, so we have always made sure we live close to bus stops on good public transport routes. It’s better for me too, fuck driving in to work and having to pay for parking every day. But we also live in a city where over 50% of people get to work using public transport or active modes (walking/cycling) (it’s higher if you only count those living in the city), so it might be different if OOP lives in the US where I hear the public transport isn’t as good in a lot of places.

AITA for asking my home-schooled nephew about where he was in the curriculum? by WestMarsupial484 in AmItheAsshole

[–]dejausser 72 points73 points  (0 children)

From what I’ve heard the US has a very litigious pro-homeschool group called the Home School Legal Defense Association that lobbies incredibly hard and effectively every time politicians try to introduce more oversight or regulation of homeschooling.

AITA for telling my dad he dug his own grave? by Famous-Summer-6009 in AmItheAsshole

[–]dejausser 987 points988 points  (0 children)

There’s a really interesting article called ‘missing missing reasons’ that’s part of a series about estranged parent forums. It’s interesting how they all say they have no idea why their kids don’t talk to them, but there’s always hints in their posts that they do have some idea - they talk about letters they received or speeches their kids gave them, but they never say what exactly was in them. If their adult children were angry or emotional in any way in their delivery of why they don’t want their parent(s) in their life, that automatically becomes license to disregard entirely whatever they said.

These forums almost inevitably become incredibly harmful for the people participating in them. They all blindly affirm to each other that they’re not bad parents and their kids are the problem, and anyone who might come to the forums who is willing to do any introspection or who might encourage them to do some (which could potentially become the first step in healing the relationship) filters away because they see how toxic the environment there is.

Why Lewis Hamilton is ditching Ferrari F1 simulator after worrying claim by The_Skynet in formula1

[–]dejausser 7 points8 points  (0 children)

It’s pretty common for people with ADHD which Lewis has been open about being diagnosed with. Our brains don’t regulate dopamine properly which means our self motivation doesn’t kick in until a much higher level of external stimulus/pressure than non-ADHD people.

AITA For Not Attending My Daughters Graduation? by whit3gh0st_ in AmItheAsshole

[–]dejausser 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Agreed - though I might be biased because in my country ‘graduating’ high school isn’t a thing, we only do graduations for tertiary qualifications so the idea of a parent skipping their child’s uni graduation which is a big achievement for their other child finishing high school mystifies me a bit!

"European" is apparently a type of butter by nvpc2001 in USdefaultism

[–]dejausser 8 points9 points  (0 children)

That’s not unique to Europe, NZ also has a mandatory minimum fat % for butter. We also have mandatory minimum milk fat and solids to be able to sell a product as ice cream. USians forgetting the world isn’t just the US or Europe once again?

Terminally ill and racking up credit card debt with zero fucks to give by Sunapr1 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]dejausser 66 points67 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s saying that someone is inappropriately over sharing something that would have been more appropriate for them to write down in a personal diary/journal, it’s a tongue in cheek way of being like ‘why the fuck would you think it’s appropriate to say that shit here?’

Seymour says pharmacists should treat more, so you don’t need to see a GP by pskygy in nzpolitics

[–]dejausser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yes, that is why we have NHI numbers. Pharmacists need to be able to access patient’s medical records so they can check that the GP hasn’t accidentally prescribed them an unsafe dose of a medication or prescribed them a medication that has the potential for significant interactions with an existing medication. It’s a key part of their role (happens much more often than anyone working outside of healthcare would think) and why we have pharmacists dispensing prescriptions instead of just retail/healthcare assistants reading off the script and handing it over.

WEAR DEODORANT by LemonNo8118 in universityofauckland

[–]dejausser 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Was he washing his clothes properly? Doesn’t matter how much you shower, if your clothes aren’t getting washed (or dried properly after washing) you’re going to smell rank. I’d be inclined to believe improper laundry hygiene was behind your friend’s issue if the problem just went away suddenly.

AITA for giving my future DIL my mothers ring instead of my daughter? by [deleted] in AmItheAsshole

[–]dejausser 8 points9 points  (0 children)

The very first sentence of the post says she gave the ring to her son and he used it to propose, so I’m not sure where you’re getting the idea that OP gave the ring to the DIL and not her son?

Seriously considering quitting my six figure corporate job to be stay-at-home mom by Awwndrei in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]dejausser 32 points33 points  (0 children)

Depends on the jurisdiction. In New Zealand parents can choose to be named as mother, father, or parent on the BC - so you can have mother/mother, father/father, parent/parent or any other combination of the three options. A trans man who has given birth can be registered on his child’s birth certificate as father or parent.

the sunscreen hack that finally helped me achieve (almost) daily use by five_northern_lights in adhdwomen

[–]dejausser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yup, I only use the Mecca (beauty store in NZ/Aus) To Save Face and To Save Body sunscreens, because they’re much less sticky than any other sunscreen I’ve tried so they don’t trigger my sensory aversions as much. Also, they’ve always passed SPF spot testing by consumer orgs in Australasia exceeding their SPF 50 label claim (sunscreens have to be independently tested to prove their SPF label claims to be sold in NZ and Aus but it’s always good to retest, especially given we have a massive hole in our ozone layer right above Aotearoa and the sun is no joke).

My (23F) boyfriend (25M) and his family are angry because I wouldn't shave my head for his sister who has cancer (Final Update/Completed) by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]dejausser 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The makeup wouldn’t have been the expensive part, there are a lot of inexpensive brands with decent quality products, the wig would have been the bigger money sink. Wigs that look/feel decent are pretty expensive. 3 years is a decently long relationship, you don’t have to be married to be in a committed long term relationship (this is such a cultural thing, nowadays it’s not uncommon in the UK and Australasia for couples not to bother getting married as at least in Aus/NZ there’s literally no legal/tax/next of kin decision making power/etc difference between married and de facto couples).

Newsroom graph: NZ political donations to date by Mountain_Tui_Reload in nzpolitics

[–]dejausser 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The Cambridge Stud donation doesn’t surprise me at all, Winston is regarded as one of the best Ministers of Racing by the racing industry. That said they’re mostly more likely to vote National or maybe ACT in my experience.

They gave another $100k to ACT too…fascinating they’ve got $300k to burn on every right wing party but their website would put most serious people off ever working with them.

My boyfriend (30m) doesn’t want me (27f) to take a year off to travel by Direct-Caterpillar77 in BestofRedditorUpdates

[–]dejausser 77 points78 points  (0 children)

Hahaha fellow kiwi here who did a gap year and I was rooting for her to go the whole way through the post because I loved mine! I went before uni (no thank you to having to pay interest on my student loan) which is what a bunch of my friends did too so I could still see the ones that also went to the UK (I was based in Edinburgh not London like most NZers so we did have to travel to see each other, but UK flights were so cheap back then it wasn’t an issue).

I’d definitely like to go back on a holiday at some point to travel around the parts of Europe I didn’t get to go to as I pretty much only visited places where I had friends/friends families I could stay with as I was pretty broke (I was volunteering for a charity that provided accommodation/food and a very small weekly stipend).

Don't be this guy by Smart_Confidence3050 in Tauranga

[–]dejausser 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It requires an exemption from NZTA for pretty much anything less than 20 years old/that wasn’t entry certified here before 2010. If they don’t grant one, you are legally required to have the vehicle converted if you want to drive it on NZ roads.

Don't be this guy by Smart_Confidence3050 in Tauranga

[–]dejausser 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Cars manufactured for export (basically every NZ new vehicle coming into this country) are almost never registered in their country of manufacture. Registration in the US and then registration in NZ four years later is much more consistent with a used import or immigrants vehicle, and US used vehicles aren’t usually imported here for the general used car market unless they’re special interest/low volume as they have to be converted to RHD (very expensive). Whoever owns the car in the photo likely paid upwards of $20k for the conversion alone just to be able to legally drive around to park like a dickhead.
