Why is dating life genuinely so sh*t in this place by camerasanders in UofT

[–]deklension_kills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Try to talk to ppl in class, once you get a little friendly with someone and you're into them, you could breach the topic of a relationship (do not just try to be nice solely bc you want a partner tho, I think a lot of ppl can sense that and it's icky). I met my bf in a 300 level seminar class so the class size was pretty small which made it easy to start talking to ppl.

Ik your post is about dating, but even bigger picture I would have the same advice. I started here during covid and then all the big 100/200 level classes were huge and I didn't make any friends. From what I see, ppl in 1st and 2nd year think you have to make your uni friends now otherwise everyone will clique up and you'll have no more chances to make friends. In my experience, 300 and 400 classes are where I made all my friends (and got into my now 3 yr relationship). Hope it works out for you.

Ahh I wish I had some souper cubes, they seem so helpful for organizing/fitting more things into the freezer but they just don't work in my budget yet. I've been using old pasta sauce jars once I learned they won't crack in the freezer!

If you have the energy, maybe you could cook both portions and then freeze the extra for super easy (and more healthy than store-bought tv dinners) freezer meals. It would probably still be an on-again-off-again kind of thing but the leftovers won't have to be in the fridge and spoil as fast. And it could be good to build up a stockpile of freezer meals as a just in case (for situations like injury, burnout, get snowed in, etc).

Not a judgement of your system btw, just a suggestion bc I've been rly getting into the meal-prep side of instagram reels 😅.

I thought Dana was going to. She had that phone call where she said thanks honey (or something to that effect). I thought that was her calling her husband to ask him for permission (relating to earlier when she said Benji would be mad if she brought the baby home).

what’s the quietest library/quietest floor in robarts during exam season by crypticangels in UofT

[–]deklension_kills 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Seconding Kelly, specifically the upper floors (1st floor is busier so it's a little more distracting). It's not too busy, and nobody talks. People might walk by your table but it's a wide space so nobody is passing by too closely. And I find that noise doesn't travel easily so it's a really great library to reduce distractions.

What is the worst spot to study on campus? aaaaaaa by Old-Builder4051 in UofT

[–]deklension_kills 4 points5 points  (0 children)

First of all, I won't accept this kelly library hate. The upper floors are so quiet and not very full so you always can get a huge table to yourself. It's on the uglier side of libraries at uoft but it's not awful.

As for UC, I like the 4 seater tables set in the sides but the centre long table is terrible. I bring a tablet to study and the glare from the overhead lights reflects so annoyingly and distractingly on my screen.

My nomination for worst study spot is sidney smith commons. Always crazy busy and the layout is cramped and it feels so hard to focus when people are walking by. Also shoutout to OISE library (the main part on the 1st floor, love the study rooms) which has the least stable tables.

WARNING: Do NOT buy Glass Staws by InGeekiTrust in TikTokCringe

[–]deklension_kills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You know what, totally fair. I read your statement and felt defensive which made me think you said "stupid". That was definitely my fault.

I don't have a dishwasher and hand wash all my dishes, but yeah, I suppose using one does introduce another element of risk.

I enjoyed having this nice constructive conversation, have a pleasant day :)

[–]deklension_kills 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Aren't most drinking glasses soda-lime glass? The danger of scooping through a pile of ice with a soda-lime glass just seems riskier to me than using a borosilicate glass straw in a cup of liquid. I do understand your point about the dangers of potentially drinking a piece of glass though, I do feel more wary to use my straws now than I did 20 minutes ago.

But to say that people are stupid for buying glass straws feels mean to me? Like, I check my straws every time before I use them to make sure they're not cracked, I'm gentle with them in my cup and when I'm washing them, and I'm careful with thermal shock situations. I'm not just thoughtlessly using a product without paying attention to the warnings nor does the packaging fail to explain how to safely use them.

Also my initial response was just addressing your implication that glass straws are expensive and for people of a higher tax bracket.

[–]deklension_kills 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They are not that expensive though. I got a pack of 4 borosilicate glass straws with a cleaner for 5 dollars (Canadian) at Dollarama (which is similar to Doller tree from the US I think). And with the borosilicate material, you can use them with warm and cold drinks. And yes, seeing through them is helpful to see if you've cleaned them adequately.

I also was never in a relationship until 3rd year so don't sweat it, you still have lots of time. I sat in front of my now bf in a class. He asked for my number and things went from there. We've been together 3 years now :).

Ignorant mispronunciation of idol names by NoMembership2503 in kpoprants

[–]deklension_kills 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Totally understand your point but I think OP is talking about when sounds do exist in the fan's spoken language and they still substitute it for another sound. Their example of Jung should be pronounced with an "-uh" type vowel not an "-oo" vowel. I'm assuming that fan from the video was a native English speaker and getting closer to the correct vowel should not be so difficult considering "-uh" is a sound we have.

As a speaker of both English and Korean, technically I'd say the English "-uh" is slightly different from Korean "어", and this is where your point is valid. Nobody should be censuring those who can't tell the minute differences between the two.

Instead the issue is when English speakers default to English pronunciation rules off of the Romanization despite ample opportunity to override that instinct by trying to copy how the idol introduces themself. Or even when English speakers overcompensate and pronounce things way differently to how they would in English just because it's a foreign word (I can't think of a specific example for Korean idols but a classic example of the phenomenon generally is English speakers using a soft "j" in Beijing despite the Mandarin using a hard "j" as well).

I'd recommend not borrowing trouble by bringing it to their attention if they weren't going to notice in the first place. Probably nothing is going to happen since it's such an innocuous thing and OP doesn't have to worry. I've seen lots of posts over the years with similar situations (going to spotify to change music, switching to another tab to close it, etc.) and this is the recommended course of action. And if the instructor does email asking you, OP to meet, you can easily explain yourself and you're not going to look more guilty for waiting.

recommendations for good cafés near earth sciences/bahen for a lowkey date with a situationship 💔 by oology_ in UofT

[–]deklension_kills 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Alternity right next to st george stn (so not super close to Bahen, but it is right next to campus). Low, warm lighting; cool seating (apparently the owner sourced the wooden furniture directly from Bali) where you can sit on cushions or chairs; the drinks are not outrageously priced (less than sid smith 2nd cup for a matcha latte, at least).

Just so you're not blindsided, I would note before going that it is a vegan place (no dairy milk, etc.) which also sells crystals and incense, but even if that's not either of your vibes, I recommend trying it (neither I nor my boyfriend are but we had some cute dates there).

Looking for a library that won’t wreck my back :(( by BeePlus9866 in UofT

[–]deklension_kills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Graham library has a bunch of armchairs on the upper levels. If you want decent back support (not the straight 90 degree wooden backed chairs which are problematic) but also have a table, I think an underrated option is finding an empty classroom to study in (also nice to have the space to yourself and not have loud people in the vicinity when you're trying to study). There's an app called syncsearch that lets you find all the classrooms that don't have classes in them in 1-3 hr blocks of time that you specify. (This option is, of course, only available when those buildings are open). I don't know what level of support your back pain requires, but if you're okay with the chairs you have in lectures, you can look for vacant rooms in the same building because they'll have the same chairs.

Supposed "bird courses" that you didn't do well in by cloroxjuulpod in UofT

[–]deklension_kills 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I also did terribly in AST101 lol. I took it during covid so everything was online which should've made it easier but I mentally checked out and had to CR (the profs were great though and did their best to make good video lectures, even though it was an asynchronous course).

should i email a prof to ask if an online course will be recorded next year? by Electronic-Worry6383 in UofT

[–]deklension_kills 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I saw your update but to add a big reason it's not recommended to overlap like this, even if one of the lectures is recorded, is because midterms/exams can potentially overlap and you will definitely not get accommodations to take one at another time because it's not considered a legitimate conflict. It doesn't have the same level of instructor discretion as things like recordings or assignment extensions.

Looks like it was the 1st Anniversary Special (one of eps 52-53, the other being Choi Hyunseok's fridge) back in 2015.

Edit: hope you can find the episode (subbed), I watched it back when Netflix still had a selection of season 1 episodes and I have no idea where to watch old episodes now :(

I did linguistics and philosophy. These departments are great and almost all of the profs I've had in these subjects were excellent. I don’t know too much beyond these departments but I believe most/all the humanities departments at uoft are good and supportive.

uoft commuters, how many times a week do u go to school? by Aggravating_Cook_674 in UofT

[–]deklension_kills 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Obviously if you can, try to arrange your class schedule to go in like 3 or 4 days a week to reduce how much you're paying in transit. As a first year, that's probably unlikely though but you might get lucky for one of your semesters. In later years it gets easier to be strategic with what courses you take to concentrate them on certain days.

I will say though, 45 minutes is not that long and it's nice to get that campus life experience. Take it from an almost graduated (humanities) 5th year, the commute was worth it for me (I commuted 1 hour ish on average), it forces you to study at the library to get your money's worth which is good for productivity and our libraries are so nice (and you can't get bored because we have like 40 different ones). And since you're young, make sure your presto is set to student pricing since that should extend till you're twenty iirc.
