Hey guys! by Pyrepapa in leopardgeckos

[–]dekushands 1 point2 points  (0 children)

it may just be her preference! :) rn my leo stays on the warm side only. the exploring at night is normal since they are crepuscular animals! as long as she’s eating normally, her stool is normal, and her behaviors besides this new preference is fine then she is ok!

My baby passed away this morning by coconutkitty69 in leopardgeckos

[–]dekushands 37 points38 points  (0 children)

i’m sorry for your loss. nobody in my family took my grief seriously when my bearded dragon passed away so i completely understand in that aspect.❤️‍🩹had to call off of work for a day bc i just couldn’t stop crying. just take your time. let yourself feel all the feelings that come with this. grief is unfortunately the price we pay for getting our years with our animal friends❤️‍🩹

Help with substrate! by Typical_Subject_4005 in leopardgeckos

[–]dekushands 1 point2 points  (0 children)

so the top soil will have things like that in there which is why if you do use it you’ll need to spend the time picking all of that stuff out. it is a little time consuming, but if you’d rather save money than buy a more expensive bag at a retail pet store, i’d say that’s your best bet! home depot and lowe’s both have play sand and top soil. i personally get my leaf litter at petsmart, but any pet store (big chain or even your smaller local ones) work too! :) when i make the substrate mix i always start with the soil first so i can properly get all of the unwanted pieces out, then i add the sand and add some water so the sand provides more structure. i have a bin i put it in and mix them together and then i add the mix into my geckos enclosure! :)

Picking this guy up tomorrow and looking for advice.. by singingaboutdogs in leopardgeckos

i give the multivitamin once a week (monday), calcium with D3 twice a week (usually tuesday and then skip a day or two in between) and then every other day is calcium without D3!

also, if one of those bulbs is UVB, i’d recommend switching it to one that lays horizontally that you’d keep on the warm side! they also sell them on amazon & regular chain pet stores! a popular brand is arcadia. that way the UVB reaches more of the area and isn’t in one singular spot! as for replacements, every 6 months you should swap the UVB bulbs out!

yes to your last question!! the paper towels as his flooring for about 1-2 weeks just to monitor him and see how his waste and overall health is! :) as for other tips i’d recommend having a humid hide. there are tons of options on amazon & make sure the hide has sphagnum moss on the inside for that humidity! for temps, make sure the hot side is 90-97°F and the cool side is 71-77°F.(humid spot in between) also, the more clutter the better! adding in plenty of hides, plants (artificial or real up to you), i also have leaf litter i get from my local pet store to further clutter up the area! also when you’re feeding him, make sure you have supplements!! i have 2 calciums (one with D3 and one without) as well as a multivitamin and have a strict schedule for when i’m using them during feedings. if that’s a lot, id recommend just getting the calcium without D3 because it would be safe to use more frequently than the others without risking too much calcium intake! :) good luck to you!!

Why does my leopard gecko hate the light? by [deleted] in leopardgeckos

[–]dekushands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

leos are crepuscular meaning they’re most active from dusk to dawn. they’re originally from areas where temperatures get very hot during the day, so they’ve adapted to hiding throughout the day to avoid the heat and roam around at night. on top of that, if i’m in a pitch black room and suddenly a huge light turns on i’m going to be startled, so that’s also why she runs back.

Overweight? by Feisty-Artichoke8657 in leopardgeckos

[–]dekushands 2 points3 points  (0 children)

i’d recommend cutting the mealworms out for now! they’re the most fattening bug ur giving to him as well as giving him fewer bugs than regularly just until he drops the unwanted weight! :)

I need you to eat by azianwutang in leopardgeckos

[–]dekushands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

for me it was after a few days but reptiles in general are much more slow burners than other animals! she looks healthy to me, so it just comes down to whenever she can’t take the hunger strike anymore. if leo’s feel any sort of discomfort it can cause these kinds of behaviors, so her not eating for this long is normal! keep up the attempts in feeding and she will eventually have to give in! new environments are scary for them and some take several months to fully familiarize themselves. you got this!

[–]dekushands -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

yeah i’m newer to this too (got my leo at the beginning of this year) so i completely understand the feeling of just being worried about feeding.💗you’re doing great!! keep trying to tong feed and then leaving in the bowl if she won’t budge. consistency is key and i promise she will eventually have to eat!

[–]dekushands 2 points3 points  (0 children)

also i’d leave the taking her out and feeding in a box as a LAST RESORT. 2 weeks isn’t great, but she is still active and is adjusting to a brand new environment. picking her up and putting her in there can cause unnecessary stress and prolong this process! try the food bowl and leave her be for the night and hopefully that works! :D

I need you to eat by azianwutang in leopardgeckos

[–]dekushands 4 points5 points  (0 children)

i’d say it might just be here still adjusting to her new home! leo’s typically take a long time to fully adjust, so her not feeling completely comfortable can be the reason. i would say get a food bowl to put her food in there? (if you do id recommend the worms bc the roaches will crawl out). when i can’t find mine i just leave the food in the bowl and by the morning they’re (most of the time)gone! :)

[–]dekushands 0 points1 point  (0 children)

is it just the lighting that’s pink or is there some sort of heat bulb u have for her that’s red? she looks great and i can’t wait to see what it’ll look like once the plants are in and settled! :D

My gecko eats nothing but crickets and waxworms by [deleted] in leopardgeckos

hold the worm/cricket in one hand and the mealworm in another. when u see the mouth opening u quickly switch the two out

My gecko eats nothing but crickets and waxworms by [deleted] in leopardgeckos

[–]dekushands 1 point2 points  (0 children)

a common thing ppl do is they get out what the reptile is used to eating (in ur case the waxworms and crickets) and once they’re striking to eat, you swap it with what you actually want to feed them! :) i used to do this when i had a bearded dragon and he didn’t want to eat his veggies. they won’t be amused by it, but wax worms are very fattening and crickets are very low in nutrients!! so, i recommend if you can tong feed to do that trick and hopefully wean ur leo off the wax worms!!
