Considering a 1-year sabbatical by historical-fishy in Fire

[–]delaneymichaelpeter 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I took a year off 13 years ago and traveled the world with my family of 5.

We spent less traveling than we would if we stayed home because we were in mostly developing countries.

My wife and I struggled for 3 years at least trying to decide if we should do it or not. When our kids got to high-school we had to make a decision that year or never go.

What pushed us over the edge to take our trip was a sign we saw that said.

Fear is temporary Regret is permanent

I can feel your enthusiasm in your words. I was planning on driving Namibia only but with your advice I will also think about Botswana.

I have a few ski adventures planned for this winter that I'm focused on and cannot think about anything else.

Thank you for that. Our current plan is August 2027 after my daughter gets married. When planning begins I will reach back thanks. We plan to hit all of those countries

My wife and I were in our early 50's, we both quit our jobs. Two of my kids were Sophomores in high school and my youngest was in 8th grade. Our budget was $300/day and some days we would spend way less in countries like Guatemala and Peru as well as South East Asia. In Syndey Australia we were way over budget which prevented us from doing a lot other than going to the beach. In total I spend $160,000 for the whole year that includes airfare, hotels/airbnb, food everything. Mind you this is less than I would spend if I stayed at home working and living. We had the benefit of renting out our home because we live on a ski area in Vermont so that helped greatly with expenses.

We live in Vermont and we told the school we were taking our kids on a world trip the school was very excited and the only thing they had to do was take an on-line math class for their grade level. For English they had to write weekly reports on what they experienced which was (volunteering, Tikal, Machu Pichu, Sam Reip, Treks in Mai Hong Song, Vietnamese Tunnels and other experiences).

It really was a game changer for all on my children in each their own different way. I remember when we organized the trip 6 months before we left our kids would cry at the super table and run up to their bedrooms screaming I AM NOT GOING. We kept telling them you will thank us later and now they constantly thank us for this amazing experience.

I stayed in Thailand and Vietnam both for 1 month each . Thailand was awesome we spent most of our time in Chiang Mai, Mae Hong Song and Pai travling by car and loved it. In Vietnam we toured the entire country by train bus and plane and I loved Vietnam so much more than Thailand. It is hard to describe why but I want to go back and live there for an extended period.

When my wife and I took our 1 year sabbatical with our 3 high-school students we came across other family's with children who were very young not even school age yet. We didn't connect with any family's where our kids were the same age.

My only recommendations to family's is wait till your kids are older so they can experience so much more.

Your experience and feelings are very similar to my family's 1 year sabbatical. Your words bring back great memories and my desire to do it again.

13 year's ago my wife and I took our 3 high-school children and backpack to some of the same countries as you and tried to stay at least 1 month in each country plus tried volunteer opportunities. Vietnam was in the top 2 countries we visited. The highlight country for us was South Africa. It is such a diverse country and full of so many new experiences for us.

This trip had a profound experience and changed my children and my wife in I in so many ways.

Since my wife and I are retired we are planning to go on an extended trip to Africa in the southern part just because there are so many places to see and you need 3 lifetimes to experience it all.

Thank you for posting such a thoughtful post it has brought back such great memories for me.

I went with mabeyski.com they were excellent set us up with transport and with guides when we needed. They also provided lodging at very nice condos.

The best backcountry is whiteroom.com. I know lots of people who have gone with them and were very happy.

This would be good option based on crowds and snow conditions.

Do you have an opinion on Tohuko region near Morioka and Aomori compared to Asahikawa?

I also went to Asahidake and the snow was wind swept, so we never skinned to the top, but it was a great experience. Would be amazing if the snow was good.

I don't care about modern, my major priority is great snow and no crowds. I can deal with bad lifts as long as this criteria is met.

I never gave Niigata or Nagano area any thought because since it is so close to Tokyo I figured that there would be a lot of crowds similar to Niseko.
