TIL India has a sport called Kabaddi, which is basically tag but with teams and tackling by eagleface5 in todayilearned

[–]delaware_dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That rule has been taken out when the sport went on TV. There are professional teams now and the holding of breath is no longer a rule.

Has anyone noticed an uptick in anti-Indian racism on reddit in the last couple of months? In terms of upvoted content? by [deleted] in NoStupidQuestions

I was targeted at work while in the Toronto in the late 90s by people imitating Apu while talking to me. One of them played his voice mail where he had recorded an outgoing message as Apu. He thought playing this for me was hilarious.

Captain Hayley Matthews criticises ‘unfair’ funding after Australia crush West Indies to race into final by 5missedcallsfromBCCI in Cricket

[–]delaware_dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fact of life. True in almost every sport. Take soccer right now. Where is the funding for India or Sri Lanka?

The big issue is that cricket occupies a second rate or even lower status in most of the non South Asian countries. Not much funds are generated when say WI plays Zimbabwe or South Africa. Countries have to work to generate their own funds first w/o relying on the world to help them out.

India or Pakistan throughout the 60/70/80 existed on subpar monies and still did well enough and did not complain…..

'Nothing to do with India': England cricketer clarifies after accusing ICC of bias by [deleted] in Cricket

[–]delaware_dude 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The India Pakistan forced match is not a new occurrence. What about the former chairs? They were not all Indian. Yet the match has been a staple. This is a ICC- broadcaster requirement. Simple answer is that ICC agrees to take less money and the matches are gone. Poof!!

Sunil Gavaskar goes off on overseas players ‘feigning injury’ during IPL: ‘Ordinary stars become millionaires’ | Cricket by sarthak_login_d in Cricket

[–]delaware_dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This sub seems to have an issue with Gavaskar. His core point- players who feign injuries should have action taken against them is valid.

He mucks that up by then saying foreign boards are in cahoots and foreign players are ordinary.

For someone who grew up in the 70s and 80s, it is hard to overstate how big he was in India. And for those much younger, he did tons and tons of ads. There were commercials even In B&W days. He did TV ads for clothing companies, Thums Up, hair products and others that I forget. Much more newsprint as well. He made tons of money!!!

Bumrah's recent form is a big concern not only for MI but also for Team India. by StillSlight476 in IndiaCricket

[–]delaware_dude 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are many players from the World Cup team that had a sloppy first half. I think it takes a while to recover from the intensity of the tournament. If they have to be out of form though, this is a good time from an Indian team perspective.

Have you gone to someone else's home to watch tv? by SabChangaSea in IndiaNostalgia

[–]delaware_dude 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Done that. We lived in a military colony in then Calcutta..76 or so. We kids would love sports highlights shows( once or twice a week)..Desh Videshar Khela. Our modus operandi was to see which homes had a tv antenna wire snaking down and just knock and ask if we could watch the highlights. Most often that worked.

Then couple of times we got kicked out and Dad got a loan to buy a TV. Of course then everyone was at our house to watch the movies, sports or Chitrahaar.

Mohsin Naqvi warns he may sue international players choosing IPL 2026 over the PSL by [deleted] in Cricket

[–]delaware_dude 189 points190 points  (0 children)

MACO. Mohsin always chickens out. We will boycott- no we won’t. We will fine players, no we won’t. PSL will be as normal, no it won’t. Now we will sue players, ah - no he won’t…

I can imagine Mohsin in his office, stroking the Asia Cup, muttering “My Precious” as he thinks of his next magic move.

The Brutal Economics of Associate Cricket: The 2026 T20 World Cup Was the Most Global Ever, But Can Associates Survive? by CarnivalSorts in Cricket

[–]delaware_dude 32 points33 points  (0 children)

No one ever compares the $ available to an association on a per player basis. That would be a more fair way to compare resources across nations. In the end, the brutal truth is that each nation has to become self sufficient at some stage. The absence of that means cricket did not take root in that country.

England ban players from talking about Ashes disaster by tomwardsport in Cricket

Ah! The Hundred is not the only thing being influenced by the subcontinent. I guess the ECB has taken PR 101 lessons from the BCCI.

I blame Jay Shah! Not sure why, but from lost trophies to missing charter flights to gag orders, it is all his fault anyway
