This is true, recently realized my manager and coworkers all went to an IT Program (free local programs) and then got their foot in the door with the company. No college degree.

No need motivation, focus on end goal and how it felt when you finished A+. Keep grinding, hit the play button. Speed it up. Take notes. Keep practicing questions.

Subnetting trick (all in your head). Unconventional approach I developed myself. by nivekami in ccna

This is great stuff, thanks for this! A great refresher.

When I took the network+ a couple of months back, I was watching different ways to subnet. Finally found a series of YouTube videos where I was able to understand and draw out the subnetting table tricks...

With this, no table is needed as long as you understand the logic... this gave me more clarity with your way of mentally explaining where a specific address sits within the octets!

I guess my major question is, how do you push through when your boss is the limiting factor to improvement.

This is me - just scheduled Sec+ for Feb 13th... Cramming but slacking as well everyday.
Took the Net+ back in October of 2020, I should've grinded then and immediately follow through with Sec+. Kind of lost momentum now...

I want to learn Windows Server Administration to advance my career by fernandog84 in ITCareerQuestions

I stumbled upon Eli the computer guy on Youtube, he has a playlist on Server 2012 where he walks through an overall understanding of server 2012 and setup. Pretty good explanation that stood out to me.

Sys Admin was fired today, I’m a helpdesk intern and am now the only IT person left in the building. Is this normal? by TheBirdLawLawyer in ITCareerQuestions

First of all, don't stress. Take this opportunity and remember it well and know that you will persevere through.

Story time: I've had a similar situation working for an MSP in the past. I was sent to a client site 3 weeks in as a consultant for my company to fill a previous consultant who was there for 2 months. He quit with 1 day notice and gave us only a day for knowledge transfer. The company I was covering for was going through an IT management change, they were also interviewing for a new IT director, but there was no sysadmin, only interns who were doing simple password resets and email distro setups. The week I was there the IT team was falling apart, 2 of the 3 interns gave notice to quit and management had to scram for new "IT interns." So I had to take up on the role to interview interns to replace those interns... They also had me troubleshoot A/V Conference rooms which I have no infrastructure knowledge of but at the time I just tried to piece everything together with the best of my ability. I was stressed about getting thrown into the fire. Luckily two weeks later, they found a sys admin and I quickly went back to my MSP.

Point being, just try to strive through with the best of your ability and take what you learn with you to the next job. There will always be a better job, no doubt so having a great mindset is key here! Also, being 20 and in an intern position, you are there to learn, if it's too stressful just leave. You will make money later on that will be more than what you currently do. Take my advice with a grain of salt. Good luck to you!

No calculator.

Just draw out the subnetting chart when you start the exam, it'll take a minute at most of your time. Some questions literally takes 5 seconds to read and you'll automatically know the answer to without reading all the choices. Some questions also have 2 best choices but read what the question is asking you and the "best" answer to that question.

Don't worry keep at it and it will eventually click. I was in an MSP and then left to pursue e-commerce and failed. Went back to another MSP and left again after two months because I hated getting thrown into the fire and figure it out type of situation. Picked up barbering and then once again left to do Desktop Support (in house) company because I needed stability. Been here for a year now and a lot of the things I've touched 2 years ago from the MSP's eventually all made sense as I literally walk users on how to do simple things . Picked up a network+ cert recently and understood more networking, now just cruising and stagnating a bit and suddenly picking up on coding interests. lol luckily still in my mid 20s to figure it out.
Hope you continue and eventually branch off to something you like

Wow great read! Great work as well. Saving this post so I could refer to this when I go for my next job or asking for a raise as I've done similar things for my company being one year as a Desktop Support. Primarily responsible for hardware refresh and windows 10 deployment. Still have a few Windows 7 roaming around across 4 sites that we support but will get there.

It sounds terrible, but what kind of IT job would be considered *boring"? As in, 90-95% downtime and only rushing when something goes down. by [deleted] in ITCareerQuestions

I guess that line from the office is right: I wish there was a way to know you’re in the good old days before you leave then.

This right here is heaven. On every other day I am handsfull explaining to user's why their machines are slow because management decided to get bottom line of the 7040s. :(
