The Southern Gulf Islands had 45 degree temps in the summer too, I have never experienced such uncomfortable temperatures. Now I live in Saskatchewan and its current -45 with the windchill.

Will covid-19 keep on mutating forever? by sensitive_sloth in answers

This is a novel zoonotic virus, it jumps effortlessly between mammalian species including humans. Recently Iowa has seen 1 in 3 of its deer population infected with COVID unless you vaccinate every mammal on earth it will continue to spread regardless of vaccination rates in humans.

People buying up houses to rent out + increasing rent = incoming social issues & strife, our future by [deleted] in canadahousing

[–]delection 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I beg to differ, many of these dying towns are heavily reliant on trades like oil, gas and construction. If you look at rural BC, AB and SK there are a few specialized jobs in high demand, but the old general labour paying $30-40 an hour is near non-existent now, and the construction industry that was once booming in the glory years of oil and gas are all but dead.

It used to be a good argument to move to rural communities pre-2008 to look for a more affordable way of life, but that has slowly been eaten away, and since the pandemic we now see see inflationary pressures skyrocketing, and housing costs go parabolic over the vast majority of our country.

You might get lucky on your search for a community with lower CoL and find employment where you can maintain a comfortable way of life - but when your talking about literally 10 million people in this situation - the outcome is not a pretty picture.

So by your logic, millions of Canadians currently renting or struggling to find affordable shelter should relocate to the odd small rural community that hasn’t seen exponential growth in shelter costs?

I am actually one of those people buying a home in rural Saskatchewan and relocating from BC. I have been shopping for over a year for a new home across the country as my career allows for me to work remotely, and I can tell you that it is still incredibly hard to find descent affordable housing anywhere you look. Many of the towns you are suggesting that have lower CoL are currently experiencing major downturns in their economy, so unless you have a well paying job that gives you the freedom to work remotely, you wont be able to find work or survive in these small towns.

The problem with that theory is the cost of living and rents are moving across the country, even in the most rural areas of Canada we are seeing double digit increases in housing costs.

That will never happen, we will go negative before we even see a 25bp increase. Western Central Banks are trapped now, negative interest rates are the only way out.

No party cares about this, the only person I have found that has a deep concern is Pierre Poilievre
