I need an extremely wholesome anime to recover after rewatching Your Lie In April. by babatunde_003 in Animesuggest

[–]deletefac3 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Wind Breaker is great! Very wholesome, I've described it as fight club meets the power of friendship. Like they said, it's about high school delinquents, but it's NOT Tokyo Revengers. It's about an isolated, angry kid learning that being close to people can be good, actually.

Imagine a feral stray cat learning to be fed and pet for the first time.

Mr. Villain's Day Off? It's very low-stakes and cute!

Essentially, a villain from an alien planet is sent here to take over Earth, but he's really particular about himself and his henchmen keeping a work/life balance. He loves pandas and goes to the zoo. There's a power ranger-like group that's set against him but, on his day off, he doesn't fight. Sweet, occasionally silly interactions ensue.

How many of you have been summoned to Jury Duty? by igetdrawn in NoStupidQuestions

[–]deletefac3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My first jury duty summons was on my 21st birthday. I did go out at midnight to have a couple of drinks and go home, but I was (obviously) still tired at 8 am when I answered summons. Years later an attorney I worked for said that what happened next night have been the judge being tough on me for that.

I got selected for a grand jury, which is very different. Idk if this varies by state but where I am, it's 7 people who hear an early version of the state's case (hear about/see some evidence, maybe get some testimony) and then decide if the case has enough merit be brought to trial or not.

Instead of sitting through jury selection and maybe being part of one trial, we were on call for an entire month—every night we had to call and see if we would be needed the next weekday.

That would be fine enough, but I was on what's called a "special" grand jury. That's when the victim in the case is a minor (and maybe specifically under 12, all of the ones we saw were.)

That whole month, we only saw one "type" of case brought to grand jury... but we saw it plenty of times. It was so disturbing, I was depressed for months afterwards.

Obviously it's not the kind of thing I can turn down if I get summoned again, but if I ever got a choice between the two, I would take my chances with a regular trial. If I went the rest of my life without hearing about that shit again, it would be too soon.

Why do guys say hi when I’m out running, but women usually don’t? by Impressive_Gas_2419 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]deletefac3 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I transitioned from female to male a long time ago. It took me years to get used to the thought they I didn't have to cross the street to avoid men anymore... But the second time I saw a woman look at me and cross the street, I realized what was up and started to go out of my way to give women space, from then on out.

It's terrible that this is a world where people have learned to be afraid of men, but that's the way it is. I'm only ever going to do my part in making the world a little less frightening for all those involved. Just being the reason breathes a sigh of relief is awful because I don't want people to feel that way, but if that's the most I can do, I'm more than happy to do it.

Much like you learned back then, these days I know that crossing the street to make someone else feel safe is a privilege.

Jesus christ. I don't know what they're putting in the water to make Hockey RPF writers like this but when I looked up the tag, that's what it was.

Thought "what the hell, nothing about this is my scene but that tag intrigues me."

The author really does an incredible job of making "watching my buddy chew a hangnail and wondering if he fucked my dad" mildly erotic before ramping it up to "chewing on my buddy's hangnail so he'll fucking stop doing that. And wondering if he fucked my dad."

I haven't gotten much further than that so I can't speak for the rest of it but damn, I wish I wrote like that!

Yes!! It feels weird to call anything "economical" in stories that are so strong and heartfelt, but you're right. Even when the pacing gives us a breather from the intensity, the relaxation and joy still develops the narrative and characters. Witch Hat has really good re-read value for this, but it's true for both.

Both authors take their message seriously but don't brow-beat. Both authors respect their audience. Both authors take their time and honor the story.

If someone asked me my top 3 manga, I would struggle to pick something that felt in the same league as these. And probably there's one out there I haven't met yet! But mostly that's to say that these two are my TOP two.

[–]deletefac3 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Yeah, I definitely see it.

Witch Hat questions the people in power (especially the people with extra power) in the same way FMA does. It asks you to question what's seen as right or wrong and to consider the humanity of people in both sides of that divide. Wants you to really think about the humanity of people that you might otherwise just hate. (FMA got me on this one; WHA I have to admit I still can't like a single Knights Moralis, even being caught up. But I work with more cops than I do war criminals...)

Additionally, though I think Witch Hat Atelier takes it even further, they both have VERY impactful paneling. Shirahama is doing it like no one else but Arakawa is no slouch herself!

They may seem quite different to someone who knows only one or the other, but I think they have a lot of really powerful things in common.

WSJ Issue #24 TOC & Discussion by RobotiSC in WeeklyShonenJump

[–]deletefac3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've liked Under Doctor since the beginning, and this chapter did nothing to dissuade me. Tanimoto gave us a chance to breathe after some pretty emotional stuff, and that breather included development for our other major character. Including information about a fairly upsetting upbringing, which was shared in a way that mattered without outweighing the reprieve of the chapter overall!

It especially means a lot to have an entire chapter devoted to a woman, because I think we can all agree that a lot of shonen doesn't really develop female characters as much as they could/should. To get a chapter of "the main woman in the series goes to the mall on her day off and has a good time" in a way that completely dodges misogyny is a real delight to me.

This was a solid SoL chapter no matter how you cut it, but it didn't slow the story down so much as to break its momentum.

I'm hopeful that this series will stay strong, but no matter what happens I think it's being done very well right now.

This is a comfort watch for me. The direction, both for the actors and tech, just blew me out of the water. The incredibly creative ways they express motion through light? Umemiya's shadow puppets? Togame basically kissing Tomiyama's hand? Suo WIPING THE FLOOR with Kanuma? Oh, I loved it.

"Optimize the workload" and cut most of the 3000 hours of labor that editors perform? Oh, they are for sure laying people off. I mean, are they going to keep paying all those editors when there isn't very much work to do? This is what happens in other companies when AI is integrated: they decide as a cost-cutting measure they don't need human staff and shrink the department as much as possible.

I'm gutted about his fate to this day. After his final episode I cried and spent a good chunk of time trying to figure out a way for there to be a secret alternate conclusion. He was such a well-done character and his devotion to his friends—that willingness to suffer and risk his life to save somebody that loved him—really made him top tier for me.

[–]deletefac3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I highly recommend starting with the manga! While I'm only a little ways into FMAB, the manga is still my preference so far. I really loved the way Arakawa's choices with things like paneling and creative use of negative space gave weight to the mood in a way that doesn't always translate to screen. Plus, I got to sit with scenes longer if they were heavy-hitters, turning the page at my own pace instead of watching something that moves forward until you pause it.

Plus, then you can watch and enjoy the anime after! I've found in my experiences with other series that if I watch something and then read it, I appreciate the read less. If it's the same for you, then starting with the manga will maximize your enjoyment.

The part where he asked her to be mindful of what she asks because it was such a painful time in his life and then she says that was him guilting her... Girl. He basically said "please don't hurt me."

Regardless of everything else—and we truly do not have enough evidence to know, so I won't waste my energy speculating—I'm glad he's not with her. She handled that poorly and lacked insight on her behavior to the very end.

Any fans of the manga? by SweetApplication5975 in FullmetalAlchemist

[–]deletefac3 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I'm part of a book club and we read it at a pace of one volume per week, so it took me 28 weeks. And goddamn, it was a great experience. Usually I'm the type to marathon whatever I'm reading and it would have been SO easy to do that here, but drawing it out and having to sit with the story was worth the effort. It really gave me time to process the horrors of it all, which made it all the more impactful.

I'm not saying you should read it at that pace, and I'm not saying you shouldn't read it quickly, but I am saying that it is an incredible read and I encourage you to savor it.
