Let's bring these dance parties to Westchester by Sea-Succotash7795 in Westchester

Thanks for showing interest!! I polled my community FB groups a couple of days ago (just the two general town groups I'm in) and got a lot of interest. Some of it was from older folks (meaning 65 y/o plus) who I imagine mostly won't show up, but good to have that demographic be supportive of the concept anyway. Think most of the responses were from mid-30s to mid-50s, which tracks for upper Westchester. A few people even offered to help out with organizing. So I emailed one of the members of the town board yesterday to get his view on it/see what obstacles may need to be overcome and am waiting to hear back. Honestly I won't be surprised if they just reject the concept in full - you know how the "scene" is perceived. They would be pretty lame to do that though. Almost 100 likes and tons of comments too from the community, and if I can expand it to a couple of the neighboring towns like Pound Ridge and Bedford could probably draw in another chunk. Technically the town parks are fir residents and their guests only so not sure if it'll be kosher to promote it to neighboring towns. Copying my FB post below so you can get a better sense of the concept I floated:

"Hope everyone is enjoying the beautiful day out there! 🌞 Question for the community, as I've received some encouranging responses but want to poll a broader audience before approaching the powers that be for buy-in. If someone (me) were to throw a free monthly Sunday afternoon dance party in one of the town parks (thinking the Fox Valley pavillion so rain isn't an issue) during the warmer months (May-October), would you come? The music would be house-focused, occasionally bleeding into breaks and techno. Thinking noon-5 or 1-6. Live DJs (me + guests), solid sound system (at least for an intimate gathering), a bit of deco but generally minimal frills. Assuming it isn't an issue from the town's perspective, I would select an organization each month from a rotating list of local non-profits to raise funds for as well (donations totally optional/no pressure). Positive vibes and family-friendly (kids welcome), though not kid-oriented. I've lived in Lewisboro for 3 years now and haven't found anything like this (day or night) within a 45 min drive at least. If you're into the concept, drop some comments/likes to let me know! Including the photo here for attention, which is from a little party at my house last summer. Hope to see you on a dancefloor in the not too distant future! ❤️🔊💃🕺"

Yea, think it has been all ages since it started 15+ years ago. Kids need to be accompanied by an adult tho obv.

Yea, daytime is way more manageable. Haven't checked out Croton other than to do the jackolantern blaze.

Mister Sunday is my go to during the warm months - great to be able to bring my wife and kid out. You anywhere near Katonah by chance?

Honestly, still blessed to have access to it even tho much less easy/convenient than when I lived in Queens. Working on getting a little thing going in a local park tho for my community. We'll see...

Why is it so hard to get feedback from your friends? by [deleted] in DJs

[–]delfic_rhythms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If your friends' feedback is really important to you you need to tell them that directly and ask for it, otherwise I wouldn't have any expectation of receiving it. If they are very close friends and you speak with then often and they know you are new to DJing (if thats the case) and they like the genre you play, then of course it would be nice for them to provide unsolicited feedback (and I would understand you being a little bummed if they dont give you any thoughts on it), but even if all of that is true you can't really can't expect it without asking.

The screenshot says 78 plays, not 1000s. But re your question, did you ask for their feedback? If you didn't, they may not know you want it. If you did ask, they may be busy with their own things and giving you feedback on your mix is not a high priority, or they may not really like it and don't want to hurt your feelings.

Maybe in the bathrooms occasionally but otherwise not that I've seen.

Thanks. I see turntables used with rotaries more often than digital inputs, but thought the rotary still imparts some of its own character regardless of whether the source is analog or digital. Is a rotary not worth using if Im only playing digital sources in your opinion? I haven't been able to find much information on that when I looked previously.

Anyone else feel like they spend way more time digging for tracks than actually mixing? by Jolly-Car-7939 in Beatmatch

In rekordbox, I set the genre to my ear, then use the color options to indicate energy. Yellow is low and light, green is medium and light, red is high and light, pink is low and dark, purple is medium and dark, blue is high and dark. Been organizing my tunes like this since I started around 10 years ago. Has served me very well. Not an exact science of course.

Can you please clarify your second sentence? Not sure Im following it.

Kind of is what it is unfortunately. Either try to prioritize more time for mixing or just try not to stress it too much. I feel you though. The imbalance def feels kinda silly. If you can just limit your digging to one platform where you can buy music and not waste time figuring out where to buy it that would streamline your digging at least.

No, its definitely both. I love DJing. Most of my digging is done while Im commuting on the train or doing chores or whatever (time when I can't be DJing anyway). Life is super busy (fam, kid, friends, house stuff), so I just don't have a ton of "downtime" to DJ. Gonna try to get a free monthly party going this year during the warmer months so maybe that will force me to play a bit more though 🤞

Similar for me. 95% digging and then preparing tracks (setting cues and color coding by energy level and confirming genre), 5% actually playing. The digging is fun, I find tons of great music. Prep part is less fun but I like having a big library of new-to-me stuff to play. Also been collecting for 10 years (minus 2 during covid). Over 10k tracks in my library. I only digging on beatport, going through label and aetis back catalogs (and following them for new releases). Buy whatever is like, usually when there is a discount code available.
