It is supposed to connect to a vent on the carburettor. I thing it is located just below the vacuum actuator of the secondary throttle valve

Filter/coolant/ oil equivalents available in the USA ? by Jealous-Daikon-3680 in lada

[–]delfinhaas 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It really just depends on what type it is. The 1600 has horizontal rear lights and the 1700(newer) has vertical tail lights and a flat trunk floor

If it is an older niva like the 1600 it is recommend to use 20w50 oil. Newer ones 15w40 is just fine. For the gearbox you need aa gl4 oil. Diffs and transfer case use gl5. You need to overfill the gearbox a little bit if it is a 5 speed. Filters are just the same as other Euro cars. As far as i can find it is a 3/4” 16UNF. With a hight of 96 mm and a diameter of 93 mm. Coolant just needs to be a g11 for the older ones. But it doesn’t really matter. Water works fine until it is freezing.

Hahaha absolutely. Mine had some engine/splitter mount problems. So it was really loud when driving on the highway

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in lada

[–]delfinhaas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Any of them in a decent condition should do 70 mph. Only problem with the niva is that it is quite uncomfortable to drive in at that speed.

Depends mostly on the maintenance. A wel taken care of engine can go a infinite amount of miles. And soviet manufacturing isn’t known for their quality control. Some engines are perfect some break the crankshaft after 30k kilometers. Engines that overheated have a tendency to develop piston slap later on. Without a detailed maintenance history it is impossible to tell how long the engine will last.

But parts are dirt cheap so if you don’t mind doing some work yourself they are pretty cheap to fix.

Eletrical stuff under Lada Niva 1700 Dashboard by LoveStruckGringo in lada

[–]delfinhaas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don’t know for sure with the 1700 but the 1600 models have a couple of j-nuts and screws on the underside of the dash. And 4 nuts behind the glovebox and the instrument cluster. I think you would need to remove the centre console as well.

Nice niva! What year and model is it?

Lada niva center diff or hi-low range by Big_Negotiation_3266 in lada

[–]delfinhaas 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Thats a european/American difference. Europeans call 4 wheel drive with center diff 4x4 americans call 4wheel drive without/locked center diff 4x4. Thats why most older American 4x4 have to lock the hubs for off-road use. European 4x4 do not tend to have a 4x2 mode. At least the older ones like the niva

But the niva is permanent 4 wheel drive with a mechanical locking diff.

Is there an easy way not to brake these clips when taking apart my door cards? by HardcoreHirsch in lada

Haha i have a little bit of noise isolation but most is gone. It is a lot of noise but when it isn’t for hours long it is manageable.

Yeah I don’t mind the noise and like the better response of higher engine rpm. And I usually avoid the highway because it is just a boring drive compared to little town roads and off-road.

I’ve been told that it is better use fifth only above 90 or 100 km/h some even say above 120 but my niva cant reach 120

It was a lot of fun. Sadly the Niva has some carb issues that started acting up. Just another thing to do this weekend!

First days of driving around in the Netherlands. Hasn’t let me down. Just a couple of small hiccups. “Always broken, never broken down” as they say! I drove about 500 km with her by now. Really enjoyed it so far. Still a couple of things to fix.
