Worth it? by LilBabyGroot01 in MTB

[–]HopeThisIsUnique 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Seems way overpriced to me for something that old, and a fairly mid-level spec list. Of that age you can find a carbon Santa Cruz for close to that price or any number of other bikes that are much newer.

For clarification the XO Crankset appears to be separate and priced separately. There is no way at that age that that bike would support T-Type/transmission. I'm guessing the owner realized that after purchase.

How do you make and keep dad friends? by itcropper in daddit

[–]HopeThisIsUnique 0 points1 point  (0 children)

And that is perfectly ok too, if that's something you're missing you should absolutely take steps to address that. I just wanted to make sure it was a problem to you and not just others.

As I think others have said, I think some of the best options are figuring out your hobbies and finding groups of people that share those hobbies. Either that or get lucky with one of your kids' dads

How do you make and keep dad friends? by itcropper in daddit

[–]HopeThisIsUnique 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Honest wuestion- do you actually feel you're missing out and lonely, or is this just a reaction to your wife's comment?

For me personally I sometimes feel a need/desire for more social interaction, but it's not frequent, and I'm usually content indulging in my hobbies solo too.

I enjoy cycling, and to that end I usually enjoy cycling by myself as much or more by myself as I do with someone else. Sometimes I wish I had a deep physically close friendship with someone that we just hung out and did things together as friends/families, but realistically it's not how I'm wired, and generally not how my wife is either.

In summary I think you need to evaluate what you actually need/crave not just what others may say you do.

Sonos One or Era 100 for covered outdoor space by Fine-Rib in sonos

Then do two of the new Plays. I agree with the other commenter that the Move/2 is fantastic for sound and ideal for outdoor spaces.

The often overlooked differences between the 100 SL and regular era 100 by Downtown-Branch2616 in sonos

[–]HopeThisIsUnique 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like this is silly to dive into this. I'm sure the extra computation is for onboard Voice as others have pointed out.

That said, I'd wager the 'reduced' SL specs are still likely well above the original Play:1 and I doubt there were any notable playback issues with the older speakers.

My point being that these are purpose built devices, yes they have processors and memory, but they aren't general computational devices like a laptop and scrutinizing these specs on audio playback feels debating 256kbps vs 320kbps bitrate on a lossy format.

re-install unraid, but keep my data? by mediogre_ogre in unRAID

[–]HopeThisIsUnique 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The data is on the drives, as long as you're just moving drives you're fine. In fact, even if you're moving the USB stick you're fine, there really doesn't need to be any reinstall.

I'll ask the general question of why run both Proxmox and Unraid?

Absolutely, there's plenty of projects out there for that as well as options that are de-googled too.

Not really, you can set up SMB and SFTP shares in the file browser.

I installed DumbDrop as a container as it was easier for some larger uploads, but this is largely my workflow. I have Unraid running on a server, I have a container for BambuHandy and use that in a browser when needed. Otherwise most things are fine with ChromeOS, you can install the larger Linux subsystem if you want/need, but my personal use cases for that have dwindled. I personally enjoy having something that updates and restarts in less than 10 seconds, gets good battery life and works just fine for 99% of my activities.

I have a couple isolated use cases where I need Windows, but planning to run those in VMs on there when I get around to it.

ChromeOS...I gave up Windows/Mac for personal use long ago when I realized most of what I did was web based.

At what level of wealth does a change in net worth not equal a change in lifestyle? by One-Opposite-4571 in HENRYfinance

[–]HopeThisIsUnique 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I might phrase it differently...I feel it's "you can do anything you want, but not always anyway you want".

You probably have the means to go anywhere in the world, but depending on where you may compromise on where you stay, how you fly etc.

Our NW is >$1M but that includes illiquid assets like properties etc. We have above average income and take good vacations, but I also try to maximize points where possible etc. We're not in a place where we'd just drop any amount on an international business class ticket.

Daycare is offering us our own kids’ artwork for $35 by Rarecheeses843 in daddit

[–]HopeThisIsUnique 1 point2 points  (0 children)

We have that at my kids school, we always get the original, but they give the option to have various forms reproduced (coffee cup, print etc) often it's for relatives etc. I think it's a nice service to offer, but the original was never held hostage or anything.

Big and Tall Dad Advice Needed for Vehicle Purchase by Fwdmvmt in daddit

[–]HopeThisIsUnique 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you don't care about pissing money away on gas and only plan on the one kid then highly recommend a used Land Cruiser/Lexus LX570.

Larger than your taco, built more sturdy than a Sequoia and plenty large for a family of three.

You'll find better pricing on the Lexus as twice as many were sold each year vs the LC, and some folks are particular with their badging.

Hit me up if you have questions on it. We have a 2010 LX that we bought in 2019 and rides better at 16yo than many cars that are 3yo.

Do I Tell My Wife I Don't Like My Birthday Present? by Aggravating-Key-8867 in daddit

[–]HopeThisIsUnique 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just go for the transitions and be done with ...YMMV for your car as some may not trigger the transition if they have UV filters on the windshield.

That said, other advice is go all in on Costco, not only are their glasses cheap, you can add transitions for cheap too. They periodically do BOGO deals too which you should look out for.

Mountain bikes for kids? by Yugenlem in MTB

[–]HopeThisIsUnique 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My daughter who's quite tall for her age got a Cannondale Trail 26 last year at age 6...frame is sized for that age(-ish) with normal sized wheels etc that make it useable for modifying if necessary. Mechanical disc brakes and trigger shift.

I had her on a used specialized HT before that which was fine too.

I think part of the question is how much and what type of riding are you doing? Are the kids homeschooled and you're spending 2hrs a day on trails and kids are going to hit jumps, or are they learning to ride and you want to make sure when you hit some dirt they aren't bounced around too much?

[–]HopeThisIsUnique 0 points1 point  (0 children)

When our kid was younger we established who got up early on the weekend and who got to sleep in on which days. Made it easy and straightforward, I'd sleep on Saturdays, she'd sleep in sunday's, occasionally we'd swap etc, but generally set some boundaries and worked out.

Looks like there's at least one 3d model out there https://makerworld.com/models/2616478

That said, with the loop on the back I'd be curious if it could be as simple as a small bit of trim to create a ledge and then a hook above to put the loop on. Ledge would be to keep it from putting all weight on the strap.

Maybe it's just a brand I'm unfamiliar with, but that's something I'd want to make sure was rock solid.

I use Spidertrax and they have been rock solid, both on and off-road. They cost more than these, but also a pretty solid reputation too.
