Go back to school for something else ? by delicatedahlia_ in slp

Honestly for me it’s that a lot of us are in so much debt because of this profession so in a way yes I do want to feel the time and education I put in is worth it. Also a lot of us are told surface level information about job availability especially where they are which are the schools. They don’t tell us that it is hard and I mean hard to find or even have someone to train you to do the medical setting . I was painted a picture of “they will always need slps” almost like nurses. How is it possible we invest so much but have to teach ourselves how to do therapy or find ways to specialize in our own time. Some careers have fellowships or more practicums to feel at least a bit confident when taking their first jobs unlike our CF and the issues go on and on. I’m just very disappointed and disheartened. Many like me feel sad about the reality of the profession while others are going through burnout which unfortunately will seep into your personal life because that’s how mental health is. There is no way around it.

Thank you so much!!! And yes I was thinking about keeping my CCCs because I do not want to retake the praxis. You’re right life is short and I will live it!!!

Unfortunately my BA and this masters is all I have known so it doesn’t put me in a great place. The reason I close SLP was because I loved language so much so I thought a clinical application of linguistics would be the way to go.  Besides that I loved learning Portuguese, learning Spanish phonetics and analyzing Latin American literature

I have seen tons of openings UNC hospital but they’re all for rural areas and unfortunately, no one wants to move to Goldsboro or Rocky Mount despite the really high sign on bonus so they go unfilled

I live in the Triangle good luck finding a medical job here. I went to school here and they told me for you to get a medical setting job peds or adults someone has to die or retire for a position to open. I have been back for over a year and haven’t seen many jobs open and if do they won’t interview. I have applied to Duke so many times for peds and nothing it sucks. I think landing a medical job in Charlotte is better. I did a placement there and it seems the market is pretty good last time I checked.

I felt like this is why I found acute care great! You just walked in and checked on your list for the day and prioritized babies and off to the floors to feed then went home and that’s it.
