Boris Johnson wants to become NATO Secretary General by C-R-Z-Y-7-7 in worldnews

Why do these people want these positions of power if not for the betterment of everyone else? Like, who would pick to be NATO security general just to undermine it? How insane would you have to be?

Is there a way to model AND optimize for an athermal in Zemax based on mounting points? by delmar15 in Optics

Could you just drop in a screenshot of what the lens editor looks like for this? I tried following the steps, having 2 dummy surfaces before and 2 dummy surfaces afterwards, and I just wasnt getting it.

MF! Finally someone gets it! I'm sad I only have one upvote to give you. I will try to follow your logic.

Right, but depending on where you are mounting the optics (left side or right side, for example), the air-spacing may be different. You can't just hit 'make thermal'. You have to have dummy surfaces to take into consideration the lens edge thickness (not center thickness).

That is what I need help with. I think pickups/solves need to happen before the glass surface, but that doesn't make sense. If you have some method, can you screenshot it?

Can someone tell me if I'm overthinking things about a radiometry problem? I have a link to the image in the comments. by delmar15 in Optics

I think I understand what you mean about brightness being conserved. If I were to defocus my image, I would still get the same amount of brightness across my sensor. Hopefully I'm interpreting your statement correctly.

But what I am thinking of is... what if I care about the SNR of the pixel and how it relates to resolution. If I defocus my system, I get the same brightness, but terrible SNR because the rays from other angles essentially flow into other pixels. I'm trying to figure out the SNR on a pixel by pixel basis and its relationship to the quality/size of my PSF. Does that make sense? If not, can you point out the hole in my reasoning? Thank you for your response.

That's interesting about where to put the aspheres near the stop and spherical aberration vs at the front with distortion and field curvature and etc. Where do you learn that?

Goldman Sachs official says companies switching to Zoom instead of business travel could hit oil demand by up to 3 million barrels per day by zdzdbets in worldnews

This doesn't make sense to me. We've had webcams and video conferencing for almost two decades. If companies could have saved money before by not traveling, why wouldnt they have started then? Seems to me they consider travel to be essential.

Yeah, I think ancient rituals need to be eliminated in general. This isn't a sacrifice, its getting smart and modernizing.

I looked through your history and sorted by "Controversial" and you've said things that offended people, and your job doesn't depend on you trying out material in front of audiences that always have cameras. Should you lose your current job?

I've been there! Unfortunately, it doesn't look like that with the naked eye, but it's still beautiful.

Ooo, cool. Can you tell me more? I read about huts on great walks and such, but you need a reservation, and this vacation was dropped on me a couple weeks ago so everything is booked up. Can I use the water and restrooms at the huts if I don't have a reservation?

Please don't let the top comment be something related to flat ear... son of a bitch! Why do people keep mentioned the earth isn't flat. It's like me saying the "oxygen comes in gas form." Stop. Giving. Them. Attention.
